Fall 2005 plant monitoring survey -- shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10
A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2005 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

The biomass of plants surveyed in permanent plots at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites in October 2005 was estimated based on allometric relationships between biomass and shoot height and flowering status derived for each site, zone, and species in October 2002. Biomass was only calculated for dominant species, including Spartina alterniflora, S. cynosuroides, Juncus roemerianus, and Zizaniopsis miliacea. This data set is based on GCE plant monitoring survey data set PLT-GCEM-0511a, and allometric relationships were based on GCE data set PLT-GCEM-0211b.

I conducted a plant richness survey of 59 sites around Sapelo Island and St. Simons Island, Georgia, in June-July 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland, barrier island, and back-barrier hammock island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water's edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site.
Mollusc population abundance monitoring: Fall 2005 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10
This data set is the Fall 2005 estimate of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc abundance at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Species abundance was determined by hand-collecting all the infaunal and epifaunal molluscs from within quadrats of known area in mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in fomalin, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, counted and measured (size data is reported separately). The counts were converted to number per square meter. Gastropod species are listed first, followed by bivalve species. Size distribution data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-0704a2.
Mollusc population size distribution monitoring: Fall 2005 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc size distributions based on collections from GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10
This data set is the Fall 2005 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc species' size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, fixed in fomalin, transferred to and preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or small etched rulers under a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-0704a1. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

I conducted a plant richness survey of 49 sites on the Texas Gulf Coast in the Spring (April-May) of 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland and barrier island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water’s edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the site pool, or species encountered at the site. This data set is a companion to PLT-GCET-0608, which provides similar data for sites around Sapelo Island, Georgia.

I sampled 59 sites around Sapelo Island and St. Simons Island, Georgia, in June-July 2005. Sites were chosen to include a range of mainland, barrier island, and back-barrier hammock island locations. All sites were dominated by salt marsh plant species, primarily Spartina alterniflora. To provide a general indication of the salinity conditions prevailing at each site, I measured salinity of the nearest body of water with a refractometer on the date that the site was sampled. Plant richness was documented along a single 5.0m wide transect at each site. Each transect began at the lower elevational limit of vegetation and continued perpendicular to the water’s edge to the shrub community at the upper marsh border. Plant presence was noted in a series of nested subplots within a 1.0m x 5.0m plot at each meter along the transect. The results posted here are sites, position, salinity, and the composition of the plant community in 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrats located at 1 m intervals along the transect. This data set is a companion to PLT-GCET-0608, which provides pooled data for sites in Georgia.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Valleywide Plot Tree and Sapling Inventory – 1995, 2005, 2015
The valley-wide plots are a grid of 431 sites along fifteen N–S transects established at 500-m intervals spanning the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. The plot network was designed by Paul Schwarz for spatial analysis of tree species distribution patterns within the valley. Multiple above- and below-ground attributes have been measured on these plots. This dataset includes forest inventory data at 10 year intervals, for 1995, 2005, and 2015. The full survey takes three seasons to complete, with the datatable listing the exact measurement interval for each tree. Data are included for both trees and saplings on 371 core plots (all surveys) and 60 densified plots (1998, 2008). MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column: Nearshore Water Profiles, CTD, Primary Production, and Chemistry ongoing since 2005
This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken 2 to 4 times per year at 6 stations on the north shore of Moorea, French Polynesia: Forereef, Lagoon, Fringing Reef, Cooks Bay, Cooks Bay Stream Mouth, and Offshore (5 km due north). Measurements include standard CTD parameters, nutrients, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, water column primary production, and abundance of bacteria. Sampling began in August, 2005. All water samples were collected with Niskin Bottles. CTD data were collected with a SBE19-Plus Seacat Profiler outfitted with WetLabs FLNTURT-221 Flurometer/turbidity sensors. CTD and bottle samples were taken on separate casts at each station. Two additional stations on the Moorea east shore were sampled in August 2005 only: LTER 3 Forereef Water Column, LTER 3 Backreef Water Column. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column: Nutrients, ongoing since 2005
This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken approximately bi-monthly at 3 stations on the north shore of Moorea, French Polynesia: Forereef, Lagoon, Fringing Reef. Nutrients are measured from water samples collected with Niskin bottles or Falcon tubes. For completeness, nutrient measurements are reported even when concentrations are below the detection limit of the method, which commonly occurs at this site. Sampling began in August, 2005 and is ongoing. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Benthic Water Temperature, ongoing since 2005
A continuous time series of benthic water temperature is measured with bottom-mounted thermistors at six sites around the shores of Moorea, on the fringing reef, backreef, and forereef. The forereef temperature is recorded with SBE 39s or SBE 56s at 10, 20, 30 and 40 m, starting between 2005 to 2007, except FOR00 starting in 2010. These are ongoing except the 40 m deployments were discontinued after August 2019. The backreef SBE 39s/56s are mounted on plates at 1 m depth at LTER 1 and at 2 m depth at the other five sites. Onset HOBOs are deployed on the fringing reef at one shallow 1 m depth and one deeper depth varying by site as follows: 6 m at LTER 1, 4 m at LTER 2, 7 m at LTER 3, 6 m at LTER 4, 3 m at LTER 5 and 4 m at LTER 6. The mounting plate is fixed to the reef and depths do not vary through time. These depths are not measured by the thermistors and should be considered categorical. Throughout the timeseries, temperature measurements have been taken every 2 minutes by SBE 39s and SBE 56s, and every 8 minutes by the Onset HOBOs. Prior to July 2021 temperature data were subjected to a low-pass filter to remove noise and temperature was resampled to a 20 minute time step. Beginning in July 2021 data are raw temperature values sampled every two minutes (SBE 39s and SBE 56s) or eight minutes (Onset HOBOs) depending on the instrument. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column: Offshore Ocean Acidification: Water Profiles, CTD, and Chemistry from 2005 to 2012
This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken 2 to 4 times per year at a station 5 km offshore of the north shore of Moorea, French Polynesia. Measurements include standard CTD parameters, phosphate, silicate, total alkalinity (TA) and total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Sampling began in August, 2005. All water samples were collected with Niskin Bottles. This data includes excerpts from CTD data were collected with a SBE19-Plus Seacat Profiler. CTD and bottle samples were taken on separate casts at each station. (For full CTD data refer to knb-lter-mcr.10.) All other parameters were calculated from temperature, pressure, nutrients, TA and DIC with CO2Sys programs available at: http://cdiac.ornl.gov/oceans/co2rprt.html (Lewis E. and D. Wallace Program Developed for CO2 System Calculations) using constants K1, K2 from Mehrbach et al, 1973 refit by Dickson and Millero, 1987, Dickson KHSO4, and the Seawater pH scale (mol/kg-SW). If users wish to use different constants and scales, they will need to recalculate using the emperically collected data (TA and DIC).
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Community Dynamics: Juvenile Coral Density from 2005, ongoing
These data describe the density (colonies per quadrat of 0.5 x 0.5 m size) of juvenile corals on the fringing reefs and outer reef (10 m depth) of Moorea. Beginning in 2005, surveys are completed annually at LTER 1 and 2 in the austral autumn (April-May). Addition event-motivated sampling began in 2011 with additional sites from the other two shores of Moorea surveyed and surveys at LTER 1 and 2 repeated in August; these surveys will likely continue for 1-2 years but will not become a maintained component of the annual sampling. The focus is on juvenile corals defined as individuals less than or equal to 40 mm diameter. These data include juvenile scleractinian corals and juvenile Millepora spp. (Class: Hydrozoa; Order Hydroida, Sub Order Anthomedusae, Family Milleporidae). These transects are co-located with annual photographic surveys and, therefore, broad community descriptors are also available.
North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Meteorological and Metabolism Data - Crystal Bog Buoy 2005 - present
The instrumented buoy on Crystal Bog is equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, a thermistor chain, light sensor, and in the past, meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure and lake metabolism. A surface buoy was used from 2005 - 2014, which included a met station beginning 2006. Since then, only a subsurface buoy as been used (no met station), and includes frequent over-winter deployments under the ice. The thermistor chain data is included in a separate dataset (knb-lter-ntl.119). Hourly and daily averages are provided for the met data, while hourly averages are provided for the dissolved oxygen and light data. To accommodate the under-ice deployments, sensor depths vary somewhat year-to-year. Light data is collected with HOBO pendant light and temperature sensors. The make of the dissolved oxygen sensor has changed over the years: YSI (2005), D-Opto (2006-2014), and PME miniDOT (2015-present).
North Temperate Lakes LTER: High Frequency Water Temperature Data - Crystal Bog Buoy 2005 - current
The instrumented buoy on Crystal Bog is equipped with a thermistor chain that measures water temperature from depths ranging from the surface to 2.25 m placed every 0.25m throughout the water column. From the initial deployment in 2005 through 2014, a surface buoy was used in the open water season. Since 2017, a subsurface buoy has been used, including under-ice deployments during the winter. Recorded depths can vary slightly depending on specifics of the year's deployment hardware. The sampling frequency:varies for instantaneous samples. Prior to mid-season 2009, the sample frequency was every 10 minutes. Since then the sampling frequency has been one minute Hourly and daily averages are also provided. Number of sites: 1.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: The North Temperate Lakes - Microbial Observatory seeks to study freshwater microbes over long time scales (10+ years). Observing microbial communities over multiple years using DNA sequencing allows in-depth assessment of diversity, variability, gene content, and seasonal/annual drivers of community composition. Combining information obtained from DNA sequencing with additional experiments, such as investigating the biochemical properties of specific compounds, gene expression, or nutrient concentrations, provides insight into the functions of microbial taxa. Our 16S rRNA gene amplicon datasets were collected from bog lakes in Vilas County, WI, and from Lake Mendota in Madison, WI. Ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing of freshwater environmental DNA was performed on samples from Crystal Bog, North Sparkling Bog, West Sparkling Bog, Trout Bog, South Sparkling Bog, Hell’s Kitchen, and Mary Lake. These microbial time series are valuable both for microbial ecologists seeking to understand the properties of microbial communities and for ecologists seeking to better understand how microbes contribute to ecosystem functioning in freshwater.
Mean snowpack ablation data for Green Lakes Valley, 1969 - 2005.
Lowering of the snowpack surface by ablation (melt) was estimated on a biweekly to weekly basis in the Green Lakes Valley during the summer months. Poles were driven into the snowpack to form transects in several snow-accumulation areas (east face of Arikaree Peak, talus on the north side of Kiowa Peak, rock glacier/wetland between Green Lakes 4 and 5, Arikaree Glacier, Green Lakes 4 and 5, and the Martinelli basin). The height difference (cm) between the snow surface and the top of each pole was recorded. On the subsequent visit the new height difference was recorded and the pole was driven into the snow and the reset height was recorded. Poles in a given transect were relocated as necessary during the course of the season.
