Artifacts: An Efficient Approach for Reviewing Security-Related Aspects in Agile Requirements Specifications of Web Applications
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Defects in requirements specifications can have severe consequences during the software development lifecycle. Some of them result in time and cost overruns due to incorrect or missing quality characteristics, such as security. This characteristic requires special attention in web applications because they have become a target for manipulating sensible data. Several concerns make security difficult to deal with. For instance, (1) when stakeholders discuss general requirements they are often unaware that they should also discuss security-related aspects, because (2) they typically do not have enough expertise in security. This often leads to unspecified or ill-defined security requirements. These concerns become even more challenging in agile contexts, where lightweight documentation is typically produced. To tackle this problem, we designed an approach for reviewing security-related aspects in agile requirements specifications of web applications. Our proposal considers user stories and security specifications as inputs and relates those user stories to security properties via Natural Language Processing. Based on the related security properties, our approach identifies high-level security requirements from the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) to be verified, and generates a reading technique to support reviewers in detecting defects. We evaluate our approach via three experiment trials conducted with 56 novice software engineers, measuring effectiveness, efficiency, usefulness, and ease of use. We compare our approach against using: (1) the OWASP high-level security requirements, and (2) a perspective-based approach as proposed in contemporary state of the art. The results strengthen our confidence that using our approach has a positive impact (with large effect size) on the performance of inspectors in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.</p> <p>The files below contains the following data:</p> <p><strong>1) Consent form.docx</strong>: This document provides to the research subjects information to decide whether to participate in a research study or not based on an explanation of the proposed research and the nature of the participation that is requested of them.</p> <p><strong>2) Characterization_Questionnaire.docx:</strong> This document shows the questions used to characterize the working experience and knowledge of the participants of the controlled experiment. Challenges in Agile Transformation Journey - A Qualitative Study (Presentation)
<p><em>Context</em>: The agile transformation of an organization is influenced by different factors that can hinder the initiative's success, such as lack of adaptation of agile practices to the organizational context, selection of agile alternatives without using appropriate criteria, and lack of knowledge of the associated challenges. Not all organizations properly recognize these factors. <em>Objective</em>: We aim to identify challenges that can impact the success of agile transformations initiatives. <em>Method</em>: We executed a qualitative study using thematic analysis. We interviewed key persons in charge of the agile journey in four Brazilian organizations. <em>Results</em>: We identified 26 challenges in five dimensions: People, Organizational Culture, Processes, Scalability, and Technology. Among the main challenges are inadequate training, communication difficulties, a culture conflicting with agile values, incompatible organizational structure, and lack of a process to guide the transition. <em>Conclusion</em>: The results suggest urgency in the treatment of agile adoption as a contextualized project for organizational improvements.</p>
Data from: Response of bats to light with different spectra: light-shy and agile bat presence is affected by white and green, but not red light
Artificial light at night has shown a remarkable increase over the past decades. Effects are reported for many species groups, and include changes in presence, behaviour, physiology and life-history traits. Among these, bats are strongly affected, and how bat species react to light is likely to vary with light colour. Different spectra may therefore be applied to reduce negative impacts. We used a unique set-up of eight field sites to study the response of bats to three different experimental light spectra in an otherwise dark and undisturbed natural habitat. We measured activity of three bat species groups around transects with light posts emitting white, green and red light with an intensity commonly used to illuminate countryside roads. The results reveal a strong and spectrum-dependent response for the slow-flying Myotis and Plecotus and more agile Pipistrellus species, but not for Nyctalus and Eptesicus species. Plecotus and Myotis species avoided white and green light, but were equally abundant in red light and darkness. The agile, opportunistically feeding Pipistrellus species were significantly more abundant around white and green light, most likely because of accumulation of insects, but equally abundant in red illuminated transects compared to dark control. Forest-dwelling Myotis and Plecotus species and more synanthropic Pipistrellus species are thus least disturbed by red light. Hence, in order to limit the negative impact of light at night on bats, white and green light should be avoided in or close to natural habitat, but red lights may be used if illumination is needed.
