As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the hydrology dataset for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Santa Fe Stream at the B2 streamgage, located in the Bonney Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1993-94 austral summer and continued through the end of the 1999-20 austral summer. The B2 streamgage was removed in December 2000 after it was found completely underwater due to Lake Bonney water level rise. Efforts were made to continue some discrete flow measurements to estimate flow in Santa Fe Stream based on the flow record at the higher elevation streamgage located in nearby Lawson Creek. Thus, Santa Fe Stream transitioned from being continuously monitored to one for which discrete measurements of flow may be made during site visits to Lawson Creek.

Specifically, this metadata record describes the hydrology data set for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Von Guerard Stream at the F6 streamgage, located in the Fryxell Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1990-91 season. The Von Guerard Stream gage (at -77.608269, 163.253853) was removed on 20 Dec 2012 due to lake level rise. A new gage upstream (at -77.609210, 163.254203) has been in use since the 2012-2013 season. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.

An upstream location was established 28 Dec 2012. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.

Ash-free dry mass data from drift net experiments in glacial-melt streams of Fryxell Basin, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, during the 2022-2023 austral summer
During the 2022-2023 austral summer, 12 drift net experiments were conducted in four glacial-melt streams—Aiken Creek, Green Creek, Lost Seal Stream, and Von Guerard Stream—to quantify particulate organic matter (POM) flux from streams to downstream lakes. Streams are located in Fryxell Basin, within Taylor Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Drift nets were deployed near the mouth of each stream and sampled every 4 to 12 hours to collect POM. Collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER project, these data provide insight into the temporal variability of organic material transport in polar desert ecosystems.

This data package contributes to this core research area by providing a curated table linking 16S rRNA gene sequence accession numbers archived in NCBI to MCM LTER limnological sampling campaigns conducted at specific depths along the water column of Lakes Fryxell, Hoare, Bonney, and Miers. These data enable integration of microbial community data with co-collected biological, chemical, and physical measurements.

Measurements commenced during the 1990-91 austral summer and are ongoing. Anticipating lake level rise and the eventual submergence of the original control structure, an upstream control and streamgage was installed on 21 Dec 2011 and run simultaneously until the original control and streamgage was removed on 17 Jan 2013 at 12:52. During the period of overlap, data from the original streamgage was used for submitted data through 16 Jan 2013 12:00, afterward all data is from the upstream streamgage. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.
