<p>During the Sabai Webinar Series 15, hosted by the Shwetaungthagathu Reform Initiative Centre (SRIc), Burmese Experts, including Mr Hsu Htoo, Marine Biologist, Mrs Moe Kyi Phyu, Aquaculture Specialist and Mr Tin Shine Aung: Sustainability Consultant and Researcher engaged in a discussion on Sustainable Aquaculture practices, what Myanmar need to consider to transform Myanmar Aquaculture industry to be more sustainable and new. Technology such as eDNA for ecological impact assessment. They highlighted the consequences of wrongdoing in aquaculture and how sustainable aquaculture practices, such as an ecosystem approach to aquaculture management, can help farmers and all the stakeholders in this industry in terms of long-term economic impact and social impacts.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>

Data for: Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture with sugar kelp and oysters in a shallow coastal salt pond and open estuary site
<p>The data set includes environmental data as well as kelp and oyster data from an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture study where sugar kelp was planted on four established oyster farms in Rhode Island, USA over 2 growing seasons (Year 1 = 2017-2018; Year 2 = 2018-2019). At each site, we planted to 60 m kelp lines (denoted as Line 1 and Line 2) approximately three weeks apart to determine optimal planting time. Kelp blade length and width was recorded at periodic intervals, and tissues were collected for carbon, nitrogen, δ15N, and δ13C analyses. Oyster growth data was collected from the same sites across the same timespans. Environmental data includes data collected on monthly farm visits with a YSI Sonde, as well as dissolved nutrients in the seawater. In addition, temperatures were logged on kelp lines every 15 minutes during each growing season.</p>
Aquaculture-driven evolution of the salmon louse mtDNA genome
<p><span>Resistance towards the antiparasitic pyrethroid, deltamethrin, is reported in the Atlantic salmon louse (<em>Lepeophtheirus</em> <em>salmonis</em> <em>salmonis</em>), a persistent ectoparasite of farmed and wild salmonids. The resistance mechanism is linked to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), where genetic markers for resistance have been identified. Here, we investigated how widespread pyrethroid use in aquaculture may have influenced mtDNA variation in lice, and the dispersion of resistant haplotypes across the North Atlantic, using historical (2000–2002 "pre-resistance") and contemporary (2014–2017 "post-resistance") samples. To study this, we sequenced ATPase 6 and cytochrome b, genotyped two genetic markers for deltamethrin resistance, and genotyped microsatellites as "neutral" controls of potential population bottlenecks. Overall, we observed a modest reduction in mtDNA diversity in the period 2000–2017, but no reduction in microsatellite variation was observed. The reduction in mtDNA variation was especially distinct in two of the contemporary samples, fixed for one and two haplotypes respectively. By contrast, all historical samples consisted of close to one mtDNA haplotype per individual. No population genetic structure was detected among the historical samples for mtDNA nor microsatellites. By contrast, significant population genetic differentiation was observed for mtDNA among some of the contemporary samples. However, the observed population genetic structure was tightly linked with the pattern of deltamethrin resistance, and we therefore conclude that it primarily reflects the transient mosaic of pyrethroid usage in time and space. Two historically undetected mtDNA haplotypes dominated in the contemporary samples, both of which were linked to deltamethrin resistance, demonstrating primarily two origins of deltamethrin resistance in the North Atlantic. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the widespread use of pyrethroids in commercial aquaculture has substantially altered the patterns of mtDNA diversity in lice across the North Atlantic, and, that long-distance dispersion of resistance is rapid due to the high level of genetic connectivity that is observed in this species.</span></p>
Shellfish aquaculture farms as foraging habitat for nearshore fishes and crabs
<p>This is the dataset used for the analysis in our paper. The file contains species counts and behavior classifications of nearshore fish and crabs taken from time-lapse underwater video. Also included are habitat transect data from each site. Presence/absence of zostera marina and zostera japonica eelgrass, algae, as well as eelgrass metrics were quantified in the transects.</p> <p>The metadata spreadsheet contains descriptions of each column in the datasheet.</p> <p>This data was collected at shellfish aquaculture farm sites across Puget Sound, Washington, USA in 2017, 2018, and 2019 using underwater timelapse video cameras and habitat transects.</p> <p>Transects were done with 1/4 meter^2 quadrat divided into 25 10x10cm^2 squares, each quadrat was measured 5 times along a 30 meter line parallel to shore.</p> <p>Video was recorded in 2 minute lengths every 10 minutes starting 1 hour before high tide, going to 1 hour after high tide, using cameras positioned approximately 18 inches off the substrate. PVC stakes were used to mark a 1 meter square of camera visibility and organisms observed within that 1 meter square were recorded. </p> <p>For more information, see my chapter 1 thesis.</p>
Expert survey data- Low trophic aquaculture products
<p>The expert data was collected through two different events. The first event was a tasting event organized in France in October 2022, where the participants consisted primarily of chefs and cooking students who possess practical knowledge of preparing food. During this event, the experts had the opportunity to taste the LTA products, providing valuable insights. The second event took place during the AquaVitae annual meeting in Brazil in April 2023. Although the experts in Brazil did not have the chance to taste the products, they exhibited extensive familiarity with these species due to their years of experience working with them. </p>
