Sea Ice Melt Pond Data from the Canadian Arctic, Version 1
This data set contains observations of albedo, depth, and physical characteristics of melt ponds on sea ice, taken during the summer of 1994. The melt ponds studied were located just south of Cornwallis Island in the Barrow Strait, Nunavat, Canada. The reflectance spectra were acquired with a portable spectrometer. Cloud conditions and ice type were recorded as well.
On-Ice Arctic Sea Ice Thickness Measurements by Auger, Core, and Electromagnetic Induction, from the Late 1800s Onward, Version 2
This data set consists of on-ice sea ice thickness measurements derived from drill holes, gauges, thermistor strings, and surface electromagnetic induction. From journal articles, reports, on-line databases, and direct contact with sea ice investigators, measurements have been assembled from many types of expeditions with the earliest data extending back to 1879 and the most recent data going to 2016. The on-ice thickness archive currently holds data from 50 expeditions.

MASAM2: Daily 4 km Arctic Sea Ice Concentration, Version 1
The MASIE-AMSR2 (MASAM2) daily 4 km sea ice concentration is a prototype concentration product that is a blend of two other daily sea ice data products: ice coverage from the Multisensor Analyzed Sea Ice Extent (MASIE) product at a 4 km grid cell size and ice concentration from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) at a 10 km grid cell size. MASAM2 was developed to meet a need for greater accuracy and higher resolution in ice concentration fields that are used to initialize an operational sea ice forecast model. By applying some simple rules to blend the two sources, a 4 km concentration product is produced that can be used in the model. This prototype covers July 2012 to present.

Sea Ice Charts of the Russian Arctic in Gridded Format, 1933-2006, Version 1
The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in St. Petersburg, Russia, produces sea ice charts for safety of navigation in the polar regions and for other operational and scientific purposes. Arctic charts from 1933 through 2006 are collected in this data set. Chart frequency and spatial coverage varies, but charts were compiled every 10 days during the navigation season, and monthly for the rest of the year, over most of the series. There is a gap with no charts from 1993 through 1996. Chart coverage focuses on the Northern Sea Route, although later charts extend into the central Arctic. The charts were compiled from a variety of data sources, with heavy reliance on regular reconnaissance flights for most of the series until 1992.
The Dehn Collection of Arctic Sea Ice Charts, 1953-1986, Version 1
The National Snow and Ice Data Center holds a collection of charts depicting ice conditions in the seas off Alaska and western Canadian coasts. Ice edge position and some ice concentration and other information are included, though the notations on the charts are often sparse and discontinuous in space and time, especially for older charts in the series. These charts, more that 6,800 in number, were donated to NSIDC by the estate of William S. Dehn. NSIDC has partnered with the NOAA Climate Database Modernization Program (CDMP) and the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) to scan the charts and to make them available through a searchable interface.
Canadian Ice Service Arctic Regional Sea Ice Charts in SIGRID-3 Format, Version 1
The Canadian Ice Service (CIS) produces digital Arctic regional sea ice charts for marine navigation, forecasting, and climate research. The ice charts are created through the manual analysis of in situ, satellite, and aerial reconnaissance data. The ice charts have information on ice concentration, stage of development, and ice form, following World Meteorological Organization terminology. This digital record of sea ice charts begin in 2006 and cover the following regions of the Canadian Arctic: Northern Canadian waters (Western Arctic, Eastern Arctic, and Hudson Bay) and Southern Canadian waters (Great Lakes and East Coast). Each regional shapefile (.shp) (encoded in SIGRID-3 format) and associated metadata file (.xml) are combined into a tar archive file (.tar) for distribution. All data are available via FTP.

Arctic Sea Ice Charts from Danish Meteorological Institute, 1893 - 1956, Version 1
These charts, created by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), provide observed and inferred sea ice extent for each summer month from 1893 to 1956. From 1893 to 1956, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) created charts of observed and inferred sea ice extent for each summer month. These charts are based on compiled observations of ice conditions reported by a variable network of national organizations, shore-based observers, scientific expeditions, and ships as detailed in each report; in cases where no observations were available, the lead mapmakers extrapolated further ice cover using their knowledge of ice movement. Except for where direct observations are indicated, caution is advised in using the charts’ ice edge because there is no way to quantify the assumptions used in extrapolating ice edge or the error involved in this method. See the note on reliability for further discussion of potential error. The charts were scanned at the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) and are being made available here as a service and in cooperation with DMI and other contributors. Arctic and Southern Ocean Sea Ice Concentrations, Version 1
This data set provides monthly sea ice concentration for the Arctic from 1901 to 1995 and for the Southern Oceans from 1973 to 1990 on a standard 1-degree grid (cylindrical projection) to provide a relatively uniform set of sea ice extent for all longitudes. The data are in ASCII format and are available via FTP.
Sea Ice Edge Location and Extent in the Russian Arctic, 1933-2006, Version 1
The Sea Ice Edge Location and Extent in the Russian Arctic, 1933-2006 data are derived from sea ice charts from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), St. Petersburg, Russia. Provided here are sea ice edge locations, where identifiable, in each AARI ice chart and monthly and seasonal mean sea ice extents for each of the marginal seas in the Russian Arctic derived from these ice edges. The original AARI charts were constructed primarily to assist operations in the Northern Sea Route. The digital version, from which this data set is derived, is titled Sea Ice Charts of the Russian Arctic in Gridded Format, 1933-2006.
Environmental Working Group Joint U.S.-Russian Arctic Sea Ice Atlas, Version 1
The Environmental Working Group Joint U.S.-Russian Arctic Sea Ice Atlas is part of the <a href="https://nsidc.org/data/ewg">NOAA@NSIDC Environmental Working Group (EWG) Atlases</a> data collection.The EWG Joint U.S.-Russian Arctic Sea Ice Atlas was developed by U.S. and Russian partners in the late 1990s. It is based on observations collected over the period 1950 through 1994 from satellite data, ice stations, icebreakers, and airborne ice surveys. Additionally, U.S. submarines operating in the Arctic over the period from 1977 through 1993 collected data used for a previously classified ice climatology. The Atlas contains four main sections: an introduction to Arctic sea ice, a section that describes primary sea ice data sets and analysis methods, a section with a graphical atlas containing two-dimensional color-coded ice charts and graphical products, and an Arctic sea ice data section. It begins with charts from January 2003 and is updated weekly. The U.S. National Ice Center (NIC) is an inter-agency sea ice analysis and forecasting center comprised of the Department of Commerce/NOAA, the Department of Defense/U.S. Navy, and the Department of Homeland Security/U.S. Coast Guard components. Since 1972, NIC has produced Arctic and Antarctic sea ice charts. This data set is comprised of Arctic sea ice concentration climatology derived from the NIC weekly or biweekly operational ice-chart time series. The charts used in the climatology are from 1972 through 2007; and the monthly climatology products are median, maximum, minimum, first quartile, and third quartile concentrations, as well as frequency of occurrence of ice at any concentration for the entire period of record as well as for 10-year and 5-year periods. These climatologies and the charts from which they are derived are provided in the 25-km Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid (EASE-Grid) binary (.bin) format. The climatologies are also available in ArcGIS geodatabases (.mdb), and GIF format browse files (.gif) are also provided.To view the browse files and compare climatological periods visually, choose Search Database under the Download Data tab.
Arctic Sea Ice Melt Pond Statistics and Maps, 1999-2001, Version 1
Visible band imagery from high-resolution satellites were acquired over four Arctic Ocean sites (three in 1999) during the summers of 1999, 2000, and 2001. The sites were within the median extent of the perennial ice pack. Imagery was analyzed using supervised maximum likelihood classification to derive either two (water and ice) or three (pond, open water, and ice) surface classes. Clouds were masked by hand. The data set consists of tables of pond coverage and size statistics for 500 m square cells within 10 km square images (image resolution is 1 meter), along with the surface type maps called Image Derived Products (IDPs) from which the pond statistics were derived. A total of 101 images over the three summers and four sites were used for pond statistics, out of a total of 1056 images acquired. The images are irregularly spaced in time.Data are stored in Microsoft Excel format and ASCII text, image files are stored as GeoTIFF binary images, browse images in PNG, and JPG image files, and are available from August 1999 and generally for May into September for 2000 and 2001 via FTP.
U.S. National Ice Center Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice Charts in SIGRID-3 Format, Version 1
This data set provides total sea ice concentration, partial concentration, stage of development, and ice form as defined by the World Meteorological Organization in SIGRID-3 shapefiles. The data are from the U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) and span 2003 to the present.
NOAA/NMC/CAC Arctic and Antarctic Monthly Sea Ice Extent, 1973-1990, Version 1
Sea ice extent from January 1973 through August 1990 was digitized from weekly operational sea ice charts produced by the Navy/NOAA Joint Ice Center. Charts were digitized by hand using a 1 degree latitude x 2.5 degrees longitude grid. The grid boxes were then summed in 1 degree latitude x 10 degrees longitude slices, and the ice covered area computed. The data represent the extent of sea ice at the end of each month, given for 36 10-degree longitudinal sectors in each hemisphere. Data were provided by the NOAA National Weather Service National Meteorological Center (NMC) Climate Analyses Center (CAC).
Arctic Landfast Sea Ice 1953-1998, Version 1
The files in this data set contain monthly mean landfast sea ice data gathered from both Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and Canadian Ice Service (CIS) sources. Data are in the form of percent of area covered, within a longitude-latitude grid with 0.2° resolution. Details on processing and treatment are given in the contributor's PhD thesis (König, 2007). The data are provided in NetCDF format. The time span over which data are available is split into three ranges: for 1953-1967 there are only AARI data, for 1968-1990 both AARI and CIS data are available, and from 1991-1998 only CIS data are available. There are a total of six files: two for the 1953-1967 data, two for the 1968-1990 data, and two for the 1991-1998 data. There are two files for each range because the files with "_noNaN" in their names contain "-1000" as the missing value, and the other files use "nan" as the missing value. Otherwise, the data in those files are identical. König obtained AARI data from NSIDC data set AARI 10-Day Arctic Ocean EASE-Grid Sea Ice Observations. NSIDC has replaced that data set with Sea Ice Charts of the Russian Arctic in Gridded Format, 1933-2006 (AARI, 2007). That data set was edited and compiled by V. Smolyanitsky, V. Borodachev, A. Mahoney, F. Fetterer, and R. Barry (https://nsidc.org/data/g02176).Notice to Data Users: The documentation for this data set was provided solely by the contributor, Christof S. König, and was not further developed, thoroughly reviewed, or edited by NSIDC. Thus, support for this data set may be limited.
Arctic Sea Ice Concentration and Extent from Danish Meteorological Institute Sea Ice Charts, 1901-1956, Version 1
This data set provides estimates of Arctic sea ice extent and concentration from 1901 to 1956 created from a collection of historic, hand-drawn sea ice charts from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). These were used to create estimates for each summer month from 1901 to 1956 by manual, subjective interpretation of scanned versions of the charts. These estimates, shown in colored-coded fields, are available as GIS shapefiles, gridded NetCDF files, and browse image files.
