Scripts and datas for "Global Estimation of the Eddy Kinetic Energy Dissipation from a Diagnostic Energy Balance"

Input and output datasets used for a global reconstruction of the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) dissipation rate in relation to a submitted work :

R. Torres, R. Waldman, J. Mak and R. Séférian : Global Estimation of the Eddy Kinetic Energy Dissipation from a Diagnostic Energy Balance.

Inputs datas include a merge of 2 datasets from the World Ocean Atlas 2018 (WOA18, Garcia et al., 2019) and cover the 1995-2017 (95B7) period. Folder structure for the surface altimetry L4 datasets from the EU-Copernicus Marine Services (2021) is kept empty in order to limit the archive size. Datas can be download here.

Optional datasets include CMEMS MDT product (CMEMS/SEALEVEL_GLO_PHY_MDT_008_063/P20Y) downloaded here and ocean masks (misc/basins/doi_10.5281) from Martinez-Moreno et al. (2021).

In addition, simulation outputs from the NEMO-OMIP2 model runned with the GEOMETRIC parameterization are processed (mainly time-averaged) and stored in CNRM/runs/omip2_LR.Geom_Emin0-alpha01_1cyc-trd/post. These files are used in the uncertainties and errors quantification.

Outputs and published results are stored in each individual product post-processing folder while final EKE dissipation computation are located in the EKE_dissipation_rate folder since it results from a combination of multiple products.

IPython notebooks for computing and plotting global maps are also provided :

1-post_process_climato.ipynb : compute from the climatology (e.g. WOA18 datas) the EKE dissipation timescales (units in days) and the surface modes with rough topography (LaCasce and Groeskamp, 2020).

2-post_process_altimetry.ipynb : compute from altimetry (CMEMS) datasets the EKE at surface and eventually coarsen the grid from 0.25 to 1 degree in order to match the climatology grid.

3-compute_global_eke_dissipation.ipynb : combine both outputs from the two above scripts to compute the global EKE dissipation. The script also plots new maps.

0-plot_global_maps.ipynb : plot the global maps for climatology and altimetry products.

0-plot_lbekedis_ogcm.ipynb : plot and analyse EKE timescale errors from the NEMO-OMIP2 simulation outputs.

Note however that these scripts use the author python library XOCE availbale on GitHub: https://github.com/torresr-cnrm/xoce. All the scripts have been runned using the version 0.2 of XOCE. Feel free to contact (romain.torres@meteo.fr) for any help in installing and using this library.

A Complete Water Balance of a Rain Garden

A bioinfiltration rain garden was retrofitted from an existing traffic island at Villanova University in 2001. It has been monitored continuously since 2003 at a five-minute timeseries resolution and with instrumentation that would enable a water balance calculation. This twenty-year dataset allows for an in-depth analysis of the hydrologic pathways and management in the rain garden. Using physical equations and modeled data (based on real-time measurements), a balance of all influent, stored, and effluent water within the rain garden was constructed.

The water balance data (totals of individual water balance components) of all storms used in assessing the rain garden’s performance in the study are provided in this dataset. This dataset is associated with the forthcoming publication: A Complete Water Balance of a Rain Garden (McGauley et al. 2023).

Options to improve the carbon balance of the harvested wood products sector in four EU countries

Harvested Wood Products (HWP) may contribute to climate change mitigation by storing carbon and by replacing energy-intensive materials and fossil energy, reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. However, when assessing improved HWP utilizations, interactions between wood use pathways, the carbon stock dynamics, and the resulting effect on the GHG balance are still not well understood. This research aims to assess the carbon sequestration effects of alternative wood product utilizations in four EU countries. We conducted a material flow analysis of wood uses in France, Finland, Germany, and Spain for 2017 taking into account national production, imports, and exports. Then, we quantified the future dynamics of carbon stock in the HWP through time, assuming the same as in 2017 input and ignoring the forest sink. We then ran six alternative scenarios: two energy-focused (Energy, Energy+), two material-focused (Cascading, Material), one with extended half-life of the wood products (HL) and one as business as usual (BAU). For the simulation period (2020–2050), the Material scenario leads to the highest mitigation benefits with a cumulative HWP net carbon accumulation of -502 Mt CO2 for Germany, -290 Mt CO2 for France, -118 Mt CO2 for Spain, and -116 Mt CO2 for Finland over the 30 years. The Energy+ scenario with an increase in wood usage for bioenergy generates a loss of the HWP pool of 351, 80, 77, and 6 Mt CO2 for the same countries, not accounting for energy substitution effects. Overall, our results suggest that the HWP carbon stock can be increased in the short-medium term by prioritising the use of wood for material purposes, while maintaining constant harvest. The HWP mitigation potential differed greatly according to national wood industry characteristics. Hence, tailoring the HWP mitigation strategies to the specific characteristics of the national wood chain would enhance the HWP climate benefits.

The Math of Liberation: A New Language for Balancing Within (Second Edition) (Book 3 in Series)

For praising Jehovah do I publish these mathematical gesturing forms by His graciousness.

The Book of Eternity proposes a new, mathematical balancing language in which the logic stems from infinity instead of zero. The designation of the balance comes from the location at which different meanings of infinity linguistically balance with each other and provides a way for people to continue extrapolating forms and functions that logically would follow. This balancing at oneness is analogous to the resurrection of Jesus as the phenomenological velocity can come into being or be canceled out and have no effect. So, when Jesus died, that was the canceling out, and when Jesus (Yeshua Ben Joseph Jehovah) was raised, that was the coming into being. As the Resurrection, He is intimately tied to the creation as the savior. This can be expressed mathematically. As oneness, this balancing is infinite and meets symbolically with the differentiated meanings of oneness. The oneness is both the canceling (of the square roots within the height function), and the intersection of meanings (of infinity through the word of Jehovah). This book elucidates the kinds of dimensionality with which man interacts normally: distance, angle, number, mass.

Iberian Summer Surface Temperature and Fluxes for Energy Balance

This dataset holds selected postprocessed files for surface temperature and fluxes involved in the surface energy balance.

Four WRF experiments nested in ERA-Interim were prepared. The first one (N) was configured as in standard numerical downscaling experiments using the Noah LSM. The second one (D), with the same parameterizations, included a step of 3DVAR data assimilation every 6 hours. The third and the fourth ones (S and C) are similar to N and D but use a diffusive soil scheme instead of NOAH LSM. The experiments covered the period 2010-2014 after a year of spin-up (2019).

The following 3-hourly files are included:

Tsoil: soil temperature for the first 2 top levels of the surface.

T2: 2 metre temperature.

Latent: Latent heat flux.

Sensible: Sensible heat flux.

NetSW: net short-wave radiation flux at the surface.

NetLW: net long-wave radiation flux at the surface.

GRDFLX: ground flux toward lower layers of the soil.

The N, D, C or S characters in the file names indicate whether the files come from the WRF N, D, C or S experiments. The files include a table including the 3-hourly data for each grid point over the Iberian Peninsula: year | month | day | hour | V1 | ... | V2058

The 2058 grid points included in each file are listed in the same order as in the file WRFmask_points_withoutUrban_withLandType.dat
