Dataset from "Combined Landsat and L-Band SAR Data Improves Land Cover Classification and Change Detection in Dynamic Tropical Landscapes"

<p>These are&nbsp;the output land cover and land cover change raster maps from the paper, &quot;<a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/rs10020306">Combined Landsat and L-Band SAR Data Improves Land Cover Classification and Change Detection in Dynamic Tropical Landscapes</a>,&quot; published in Remote Sensing journal.</p> <p>ABSTRACT.&nbsp;Robust quantitative estimates of land use and land cover change are necessary to develop policy solutions and interventions aimed towards sustainable land management. Here, we evaluated the combination of Landsat and L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to estimate land use/cover change in the dynamic tropical landscape of Tanintharyi, southern Myanmar. We classified Landsat and L-band SAR data, specifically Japan Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) and Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar-2 (ALOS-2/PALSAR-2), using Random Forests classifier to map and quantify land use/cover change transitions between 1995 and 2015 in the Tanintharyi Region. We compared the classification accuracies of single versus combined sensor data, and assessed contributions of optical and radar layers to classification accuracy. Combined Landsat and L-band SAR data produced the best overall classification accuracies (92.96% to 93.83%), outperforming individual sensor data (91.20% to 91.93% for Landsat-only; 56.01% to 71.43% for SAR-only). Radar layers, particularly SAR-derived textures, were influential predictors for land cover classification, together with optical layers. Landscape change was extensive (16,490 km2; 39% of total area), as well as total forest conversion into agricultural plantations (3,214 km2). Gross forest loss (5,133 km2) in 1995 was largely from conversion to shrubs/orchards and tree (oil palm, rubber) plantations, and gross gains in oil palm (5,471 km2) and rubber (4,025 km2) plantations by 2015 were mainly from conversion of shrubs/orchards and forests. Analysis of combined Landsat and L-band SAR data provides an improved understanding of the associated drivers of agricultural plantation expansion and the dynamics of land use/cover change in tropical forest landscapes.</p>

Moreover, their behavior itself may exhibit more or less non-smooth evolutions, as when fracture occurs. Therefore, robust simulation models are of interest to capture such behaviors. A particular focus is made herein on time-stepping explicit dynamics schemes to allow efficient simulations, and non-smoothness is embedded within the discrete resolution model, so that robust simulations can be obtained, with a minimum number of numerical parameters. The original contributions of this article lie in the way the non-smooth behavior is formulated to be embedded in an explicit dynamics framework. This study focuses on the solver for dynamics with non-smooth interface behavior, rather than on the behavior models themselves. The applications concern non-smooth interface behaviors at macroscopic scale, between displacement jump on the 2D interface surface with no thickness, and interfacial force distributions acting on the bodies apart the interface. The proposed test cases which can serve as benchmarks for simulation codes, concern in a first step contact and perfectly plastic interface behavior (for illustrative purpose, on a 0D example). The last numerical test deals with contact, friction, fracture and adhesion for an extrinsic perfectly brittle interface behavior, to exemplify the feasibility on a full 3D finite element model.</p>

Dataset: A review of methods to trace material flows into final products in dynamic material flow analysis - from industry shipments in physical units to monetary input-output tables (p

<p>Dynamic material flow analysis (dMFA) is widely used to model stock-flow dynamics. To appropriately represent material lifetimes, recycling potentials, and service provision, dMFA requires data about the allocation of economy-wide material consumption to different end-use products or sectors, that is, the different product stocks, in which material consumption accumulates. Previous estimates of this allocation only cover few years, countries, and product groups. Recently, several new methods for estimating end-use product allocation in dMFA were proposed, which so far lack systematic comparison. We review and systematize five methods for tracing material consumption into end-use products in inflow-driven dMFA and discuss their strengths and limitations. Widely used data on industry shipments in physical units have low spatio-temporal coverage, which limits their applicability across countries and years. Monetary input&ndash;output tables (MIOTs) are widely available and their economy-wide coverage makes them a valuable source to approximate material end-uses. We find four distinct MIOT-based methods: consumption-based, waste input&ndash;output MFA (WIO-MFA), Ghosh absorbing Markov chain, and partial Ghosh. We show that when applied to a given MIOT, the methods&rsquo; underlying input&ndash;output models yield the same results, with the exception of the partial Ghosh method, which involves simplifications. For practical applications, the MIOT system boundary must be aligned to those of dMFA, which involves the removal of service flows, sector (dis)aggregation, and re-defining specific intermediate outputs as final demand. Theoretically, WIO-MFA, applied to a modified MIOT, produces the most accurate results as it excludes massless and waste transactions. In part 2 of this work, we compare methods empirically and suggest improvements for aligning MIOT-dMFA system boundaries.</p>
