FIGURE 5 in Resolving two Haploembia (Embioptera: Oligotomidae) cryptic species: molecular data confirms parthenogenetic females can be distinguished by their antisocial behavior

FIGURE 5. Reflectance at different wavelengths for body parts, as labeled, for H. tarsalis (left) and H. solieri (right). The paler ventral abdomen (indicated with an asterisks) for H. tarsalis was consistently distinctive.

FIGURE 4 in Resolving two Haploembia (Embioptera: Oligotomidae) cryptic species: molecular data confirms parthenogenetic females can be distinguished by their antisocial behavior

FIGURE 4. Haploembia of California (not to scale). (A) H. tarsalis adult female (1.2 cm long) showing the characteristic pale coloration with depigmented blotches. Overall, coloration of H. tarsalis females varies from mottled amber brown to darker brown, but the contrasting venter has been consistent and apparently diagnostic when compared to H. solieri (see also Fig. 5). (B) H. solieri adult female (1.2 cm long) showing characteristic deeper pigmentation than H. tarsalis. (C) Close-up of an egg of H. tarsalis. (D) Eggs of H. solieri. Scale line = 1 mm. Arrows in C and D indicate opercular ring, a diagnostic trait for separating the two species, where the ring of H. tarsalis eggs is more flattened while that of H. solieri is more conspicuous and raised. (E) H. solieri adult male (1.1 cm) displaying typical black body and head and orange pronotum, enlarged head compared to females with sharp mandibles and a lack of wings. This specimen was mounted on a slide. The label reads "Haploembia solieri, male. California. Redwood City, Residential Zone. 18 III 76. E. S. Ross".
