Effects of mangrove cover on coastal erosion during a hurricane in Texas, USA
We tested the hypothesis that mangroves provide better coastal protection than salt marsh vegetation using ten 1,008 m2 plots in which we manipulated mangrove cover from 0 to 100 percent. Hurricane Harvey passed over the plots in 2017. Data from erosion stakes indicated up to 26 cm of vertical and 970 cm of horizontal erosion over 70 months in the plot with 0 percent mangrove cover, but relatively little erosion in other plots. The hurricane did not increase erosion, and erosion decreased after the hurricane passed. Data from drone images indicated 196 m2 of erosion in the 0 % mangrove plot, relatively little erosion in other plots, and little ongoing erosion after the hurricane. Transects through the plots indicated that the levee (near the front of the plot) and the bank (the front edge of the plot) retreated up to 9 m as a continuous function of decreasing mangrove cover. Soil strength was greater in areas vegetated with mangroves than in areas vegetated by marsh plants, or nonvegetated areas, and increased as a function of plot-level mangrove cover. Mangroves prevented erosion better than marsh plants did, but this service was non-linear, with low mangrove cover providing most of the benefits.
Multi-millennial Record of Erosion and Fires in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, USA
Bottomland sediments from the southern Blue Ridge Mountains provide a coarse-resolution, multi-millennial stratigraphic record of past regional forest disturbance (soil erosion). This record is represented by 12 separate vertical accretion stratigraphic profiles that have been dated by radiocarbon, luminescence, cesium-137, and correlation methods continuously spanning the past 3,000 years of pre-settlement (pre-dating widespread European American settlement) and postsettlement strata. Post-settlement vertical accretion began in the late 1800s, appears to be about an order of magnitude faster than pre-settlement rates, and is attributable to widespread deforestation for timber harvest, farming, housing development, and other erosive activities of people. Natural, climate-driven, or non-anthropic forest disturbance is subtle and difficult to recognize in pre-settlement deposits. There is no indication that pre-settlement Mississippian and Cherokee agricultural activities accelerated erosion and sedimentation in the region. A continuous 11,244 years before present (BP) vertical accretion record from a meander scar in the Upper Little Tennessee River valley indicates abundant charcoal (prevalent fires) at the very beginning of the Holocene (11,244-10,900 years BP). In contrast, moderate to very low levels of charcoal are apparent over the remaining Holocene until about 2,400 years BP when charcoal influx registers a pronounced increase. These data are consistent with the idea that Native Americans used fire extensively to manage forests and to expanded agricultural activities during Woodland and later cultural periods over the past 3000 years. However, there is no indication that prehistoric intentional use of fire and agriculture caused accelerated erosion and sedimentation.

Data from: Assessing spatial patterns of soil erosion in a high‐latitude rangeland
<p>High‐latitude areas are experiencing rapid change: we therefore need a better understanding of the processes controlling soil erosion in these environments. We used a spatiotemporal approach to investigate soil erosion in Svalbarðstunga, Iceland (66° N, 15° W), a degraded rangeland. We used three complementary datasets: 1) high‐resolution UAV imagery collected from 12 sites (total area ~0.75 km<sup>2</sup>); 2) historical imagery of the same sites; and 3) a simple, spatially‐explicit cellular automata model. Sites were located along a gradient of increasing altitude and distance from the sea, and varied in erosion severity (5–47% eroded). We found that there was no simple relationship between location along the environmental gradient and the spatial characteristics of erosion. Patch‐size frequency distributions lacked a characteristic scale of variation, but followed a power‐law distribution on five of the 12 sites. Present total eroded area is poorly related to current, site‐scale levels of environmental stress, but the number of small erosion patches did reflect site‐level stress. Small (< 25 m<sup>2</sup>) erosion patches clustered near large patches. The model results suggested that the large‐scale patterns observed likely arise from strong, local interactions, which mean that erosion spreads from degraded areas. Our findings suggest that contemporary erosion patterns reflect historical stresses, as well as current environmental conditions. The importance of abiotic processes to the growth of large erosion patches and their relative insensitivity to current environmental conditions makes it likely that the total eroded area will continue to increase, despite a warming climate and reducing levels of grazing pressure.</p>

Fourier transformed infrared reflectance (FTIR) spectra of peat soils collected from the top and bottom of peatland erosion gullies
<p>Peat soil was randomly collected from gullies within two eroding blanket bogs. Balmoral (BAM) is on a large high-altitude plateau blanket bog in the eastern part of the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, UK (56.93° N, − 3.16° E, 642 m asl) and Glensaugh (GSA) is an upland livestock farm with sections of and blanket bog peatland in the Grampian foothills (56.55° N, 2.33° E, 412 m asl). Both sites have undergone extensive degradation and peat erosion, and both have, in some parts, recently undergone restoration practices, including bunding and reprofiling.</p> <p>Peat samples were collected at Glensaugh and Balmoral as follows. At Glensaugh, peat at the top 1 cm of exposed gully sides (approximately 10-20cm from the vegetated surface) and at the gully bottom were taken, air dried and passed on for FTIR analysis. These gullies correspond to four erosion pin measurement areas and their corresponding peat sediment trap areas at Glensaugh. At Balmoral, the same approach was taken except six ‘gully top’ and ‘gully bottom’ sites were randomly selected and not geographically paired in the same way at Glensaugh.</p> <p>Samples were air dried and finely ball milled, prior to FTIR analysis. FTIR spectra were recorded using a Bruker Vertex 70 FTIR spectrometer (Bruker, Ettlingen, Germany) and OPUS 7.2 software. To record the FTIR spectra, each of the samples were placed, in turn, on a Diamond Attenuated Total Reflectance (DATR) sampling accessory, with a single reflectance system. Data points in the range of 4000-400 cm-1 were recorded with a resolution of 4 cm-1 and average of 64 scans. A spectrum of the empty sampling accessory, with the same resolution and number of scans, was recorded as the background spectrum before each measurement. </p> <p>Since the penetration depth for the DATR accessory is different for each wavelength and is directly proportional to the wavelength of the incident light (The higher the wavenumber the lower the penetration), an ATR correction was applied to the spectra to correct this effect, using the OPUS software. Dataset of bank soil parameters and stochastic modelling of bank erosion processes in the Middle Yangtze River
<p><span>A probabilistic process-based model of bank erosion has proposed, </span><span>embedding the probability distributions of</span><span> different bank soil parameters. <span><span> The dataset includes the spatial distribution characteristics of critical shear stress, friction angle, and cohesion. The prediction results analyzed the effects of soil erosion resistance capacity and the variability of shear strength parameters in the simulation of bank erosion processes, obtaining the probability of mass failure and the distributions of bank erosion width. Additionally, the study investigated the effect of varying water content on bank erosion modeling and further analyzed how considering more influencing factors in the model affects prediction uncertainty and accuracy. Moreover, the relationship between the variability of these factors and river morphology was discussed. The dataset provides the aforementioned prediction results, and relevant plots were generated using MATLAB or Python, with the associated plotting code also uploaded.</span></span></span></p>
Effects of Grass Cover on the Overland Soil Erosion Mechanism under Simulated Rainfall
<p><span>Grass cover has a complex influence on overland soil erosion. This study quantified the impact of grass cover on overland soil erosion using a dimensionless water flow path index. It systematically analyzed the response mechanism among overland soil erosion, slope gradient, rainfall intensity, and hydrodynamic parameters, aiming to identify the optimal hydrodynamic parameters capable of characterizing overland soil erosion. A predictive model for soil erosion was constructed based on general dimensionless water flow intensity parameters, comprehensively evaluating the mechanism of soil erosion on grass-covered overland under simulated rainfall conditions. The results indicate that the model constructed using dimensionless parameters exhibits strong adaptability and can be effectively validated in other experiments.</span></p>

Dataset to "Fine-sediment erosion and ridge morphodynamics in coarse-grained immobile beds"
<p>The dataset is connected to the paper "Fine-sediment erosion and ridge morphodynamics in coarse-grained immobile beds".</p> <p>The dataset is subdivided in "topographic" and "PIV" data. Each dataset refers to an experiment presented in the paper.</p> <p>The filenames of the topographic data specify the location where the data were collected ("upstream" or "downstream"). The topographic data contain the bed elevations measured around each sphere over a measurement area as wide as the channel and covering nine patterns of spheres (see paper for a definition of the pattern of spheres). Each topographic dataset contains four structures:</p> <p>- A time vector "T" identifying the sampling times at which the bed topography was measured (unit: h)</p> <p>- A space vector "x" identifying the streamwise position of the spheres with the origin of the coordinate system positioned at the beginning of the measurement areas (upstream or downstream) - unit cm</p> <p>- A space vector "y" identifying the transverse position of the spheres with the coordinate system centred in the middle of the channel and positively oriented towards the left side of the flume looking in streamwise direction - unit cm</p> <p>- A matrix "Z" identifying the protrusion levels of the spheres (as defined in the paper) as a function of space and time (x times y times T) - unit cm</p> <p> </p> <p>The PIV data were acquired during experiments 1b and 5b at the upstream location. Challenging a host-pathogen paradigm: Susceptibility to chytridiomycosis is decoupled from genetic erosion
<p>The putatively positive association between host genetic diversity and the ability to defend against pathogens has long attracted the attention of evolutionary biologists. Chytridiomycosis, a disease caused by the chytrid fungus <em>Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis</em> (<em>Bd</em>), has emerged in recent decades as a cause of dramatic declines and extinctions across the amphibian clade. Bd susceptibility can vary widely across populations of the same species, but the relationship between standing genetic diversity and susceptibility has remained notably underexplored so far. Here, we focus on a putatively <em>Bd</em>-naive system of two mainland and two island populations of the common toad (<em>Bufo bufo</em>) at the edge of the species' range, and use controlled infection experiments and dd-RAD sequencing of >10,000 SNPs across 95 individuals to characterise the role of host population identity, genetic variation and individual body mass in mediating host response to the pathogen. We found strong genetic differentiation between populations and marked variation in their susceptibility to Bd. This variation was not, however, governed by isolation-mediated genetic erosion, and individual heterozygosity was even found to be negatively correlated with survival. Individual survival during infection experiments was strongly positively related to body mass, which itself was unrelated to population of origin or heterozygosity. Our findings underscore the general importance of context-dependency when assessing the role of host genetic variation for the ability of defence against pathogens.</p>
