Public survey data of the study "Innovative and inclusive governance"
<p>The data set is based on the data of the public survey conducted in March 2023 (03.03.2023-03.15.2023). The survey was conducted to establish the respondents' political attitudes, political participation, incl. participation in the 14th Saeima elections, media usage habits, media literacy, as well as the attitudes towards Covid-19. A separate survey section is devoted to questions about higher education and science in Latvia. The sample size reached in the survey is 1016 citizens of the Republic of Latvia aged 18 and over. The anonymized data set was obtained through to the stratified sampling method by interviewing respondents in their places of residence. The survey was conducted by the SKDS Research Center on the order of researchers from the University of Latvia within the framework of the State Research Program project "Innovative and inclusive governance for the promotion of public involvement, trust, and communication".</p>

Trophoblast inclusions and pregnancy characteristics
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Objective</b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Trophoblast inclusions—cross sections of abnormal trophoblast bilayer infoldings— have previously been associated with aneuploidy, placenta accreta, and prematurity. This study was conducted to establish the relationship between trophoblast inclusions and a range of placental, pregnancy, and birth outcomes in a patient population with high smoking and alcohol exposure. Specifically, we sought to evaluate the association between the presence of trophoblast inclusions and 1) three primary birth outcomes: full-term birth, preterm birth, and stillbirth; 2) gestational age at delivery; and 3) specific placental pathologies.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Methods</b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Two slides containing chorionic villi were evaluated from 589 placentas that were collected from Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa as part of the prospective, multicenter cohort Safe Passage Study of the Prenatal Alcohol and SIDS and Stillbirth Network. The subsample included 307 full-term live births, 212 preterm live births, and 70 stillbirths.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><b>Results</b></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>We found that the odds of identifying at least one trophoblast inclusion across two slides of chorionic villi was significantly higher for placentas from preterm compared to term liveborn deliveries (OR = 1.74; 95% CI: 1.22, 2.49, <i>p </i>= 0.002), with an even greater odds ratio for placentas from stillborn compared to term liveborn deliveries (OR = 4.95; 95% CI: 2.78, 8.80, <i>p < </i>0.001). Gestational age at delivery was inversely associated with trophoblast inclusion frequency. Associated data files and scripts for 'Ancestry-inclusive dog genomics challenges popular breed stereotypes'
<p>Behavioral genetics in dogs has focused on modern breeds, isolated subgroups <200 years old with distinctive physical, and, purportedly, behavioral characteristics. We interrogated breed stereotypes by surveying owners of 18,371 purebred and mixed-breed dogs, and densely genotyping (~45 million markers) a subset of 2,155 dogs. Most behavioral traits are heritable (h<sup>2</sup>>25%), and admixture patterns in mixed-breed dogs can reveal breed propensities. However, breed poorly predicts an individual purebred dog's behavioral phenotype, explaining just 9% of variation. Using genome-wide association, we identify 11 loci significantly associated with howling and other behaviors, and show characteristic breed behaviors are genetically complex. Behavior-associated loci are not unusually differentiated in modern breeds, but breed propensities do align, albeit weakly, with ancestral function. We propose behaviors now perceived as characteristic of modern breeds likely derive from thousands of years of polygenic adaptation predating breed formation, with modern breeds distinguished primarily by aesthetic, not behavioral, traits.</p>

Religious celibacy brings inclusive fitness benefits
<p>The influence of inclusive fitness interests on the evolution of human institutions remains unclear. Religious celibacy constitutes an especially puzzling institution, often deemed maladaptive. Here, we present sociodemographic data from an agropastoralist Buddhist population in western China, where parents sometimes sent a son to the monastery. We find that men with a monk brother father more children, and grandparents with a monk son have more grandchildren, suggesting that the practice is adaptive. We develop a model of celibacy to elucidate the inclusive fitness costs and benefits associated with this behaviour. We show that a minority of sons can be favoured to be celibate if this increases their brothers' reproductive success, but only if the decision is under parental, rather than individual, control. These conditions apply to monks in our study site. Inclusive fitness considerations appear to play a key role in shaping parental preferences to adopt this cultural practice.</p>
Strategies for Inclusion in Data Literacy Programming
<p>Jonathan Cain founded the Data Services Department at the University of Oregon with a goal of to prioritizing the needs of under-served students. The focus of our statistical consulting service and data literacy workshops has been to fulfill that vision. In this talk we discuss some of our strategies for reaching under-served students (students of color, immigrants, non-traditional students, and women in male-dominated fields), including the following: hiring students of color, international, and non-traditional students to provide peer consulting services and help lead workshops, and creating a welcoming environment for all students. This has meant, for example, offering a workshop sequence teaching R in Chinese (not common at a US university), and hiring a student specifically to liaise with and offer services to the McNair Scholars Program, a program for underrepresented undergraduate students who intend to pursue a PhD. As time allows, we will also address the limitations of our strategies and invite feedback from audience members about what strategies have worked at their institutions.</p>

Multilevel strategies of political inclusion
<p>Over the last fifty years, eighteen regional assemblies in Europe have debated the extension of voting rights to foreign residents. Yet only Scotland and the Swiss cantons of Neuchâtel and Jura have adopted such legislation. What explains this variation? Through a comparison of debates that have taken place in Italy and Switzerland, I show that multilevel governance expands access to policymaking, but also multiplies veto points in the system. As a result, attempts by regional assemblies to directly give voting rights to foreign residents are generally doomed to fail. At the same time, multilevel governance can be used as a strategy to indirectly shape the political inclusion of different groups. Even if they are unsuccessful in giving the right to vote to foreign residents, these discussions can lead to broader reforms of political rights at the national level.</p> <p> </p>
Olivine Phenocryst morphology with glass and mineral inclusions
<p>The x-ray micro computed-tomography (micro-CT) model of this olivine crystal was acquired on a 2010 GE phoenix v|tome|x s240 system using a 180 KV nanofocus transmission X-ray tube. The olivine was placed in a low density polyethylene pipette. To achieve the smallest voxel size (nominally 1.1 µm), the sample was placed as close to the x-ray source as possible without collision (<1mm). In preliminary scans, we determined that the sample was blurring due to thermal expansion from the X-ray source. To combat this we placed the sample in the X-ray beam ~30 minutes prior to acquiring images so that a steady state could be reached. To further reduce image blur and ensure a crisp x-ray images the primary electron beam was manually focused immediately prior to data acquisition. A low accelerating voltage (40 kV) and molybdenum x-ray target was chosen to enhance compositional contrast in the x-ray images. Detector acquisition timing (333 ms per image), and X-ray source current (325 µA) was optimized to reduce image noise in the densest part of the image while ensuring a total acquisition time under 1 hour. A thin (0.1 mm) copper filter was placed in front of the x-ray beam to attenuate the beam hardening effects of polychromatic x-ray sources in CT images. For each image used in the tomographic reconstruction four images were averaged to reduce signal noise. A total of 1200 images were acquired for the tomographic reconstruction, resulting in an angular step size of 0.3˚. X-ray images were reconstructed into computed tomography volumes using GE Phoenix Datos software (version 2.3.2), a median kernel filter (3x3) was applied to the images prior to reconstruction to reduce signal noise, a beam hardening correction was applied to reduce artifacts in the Feldkamp cone beam reconstruction algorithm. Volumetric data was segmented and animated using Volume Graphics VG Studio Max 3.4 as well as the Fiji distribution of ImageJ.</p> <p>The olivine grain is from the terminal scoria deposits of the 1932 eruption of Volcán Quizapu, Chile. The grain demonstrates the complexities associated with studying olivine (green) and its inclusions (here melt inclusion (dark red) with vapor bubble (teal) and oxide inclusion (yellow)). The olivine is partially enclosed in silicate glass (gray) and adhering plagioclase (white) crystals. This model shows the morphology of this olivine crystal that includes subgrains and melt channels (often referred to as embayments or re-entrants) that connect from the outside of the grain and extend into the grain’s center.</p>

<p>This repository includes the data used to compile the results presented in the scientific publication: "In-vivo characterization of magnetic inclusions in the subcortex from non-exponential transverse relaxation decay".</p> <p>Rita Oliveira, Antoine Lutti<br>Laboratory for Research in Neuroimaging (LREN)<br>Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Lausanne University Hospital and University of Lausanne<br>Mont-Paisible 16, CH-1011 Lausanne, Switzerland<br><br>Classically, the MRI transverse relaxation decay is analyzed by fitting the signal decay over echo time voxel-wise with a monoexponential function (Exp), for which a decay rate R<sub>2</sub><sup>∗</sup> is estimated. However, the presence of magnetic material within the tissue, such as iron-loaded cells, myelin, or blood vessels, introduces variations in the magnetic field, which can modify the exponential behaviour of the decay (1,2). In such inhomogeneous magnetic fields, the theory predicts a transient regime starting with a Gaussian behaviour at short echo times and approaching a monoexponential relaxation at long echo times (1,3–6).<br>We highlight three different analytical descriptions of the signal decay that account for the transient regime of the transverse relaxation decay: i) the Anderson and Weiss, 1953 model (AW); ii) the Jensen and Chandra, 2000 model/Sukstanskii and Yablonskiy, 2003 model (SY; in the article is called JC); iii) and following a Padé approximation (Padé) of the transition from Gaussian to exponential decay.<br>This repository includes transverse relaxation decay data that enables the observation of the non-exponential MRI transverse relaxation. The data was acquired from 5 healthy volunteers at 3T. AW, SY, Padé, and Exp are the different methods that we used to fit the data with. Here we focus on the analysis of subcortical brain regions: Substantia Nigra, Pallidum, Putamen, Caudate, and Thalamus.</p> <p><strong>Data Description</strong><br>The necessary files to compile the results presented in the scientific publication can be found in the ‘<em>multiecho</em>’ folder. There are three different folders corresponding to three repetitions of the acquisition (‘rep1’ to ‘rep3’). The data consists of:<br>• resc_den_ subject_name_N.nii: magnitude image file corresponding to echo N. These files were previously denoised and rescaled (resc_den). The description field of the header of the images contains the corresponding TE at which the image was acquired, which will be needed in the fitting routine. Since we focus on the analysis of subcortical brain regions (Substantia Nigra, Pallidum, Putamen, Caudate, and Thalamus), the multi-echo data is masked within this region.<br>• nf: value of the noise floor level. Corresponds to the noncentrality parameter of a Rician distribution fitted to the background signal.</p> <p>In the ‘<em>anat</em>’ folder the user has access to:<br>• MT: Magnetization Transfer map (MTsat) that serves as a reference anatomical image.<br>• ROI folder: contains masks of each of the 5 regions of interest analyzed in the scientific paper: Substantia Nigra, Pallidum, Putamen, Caudate, and Thalamus.</p> <p><br>The ‘<em>modelfits</em>’ folder contains pre-computed results for each subject analyzed. If the user uses the analysis code that comes along with this dataset (<a href="https://github.com/LREN-physics/TransverseRelaxation">https://github.com/LREN-physics/TransverseRelaxation</a>), this folder will be overwritten with the new results. For each method (‘AW’, ‘SY’, ‘Pade’, ‘Exp’) there is a folder containing the corresponding resulting maps. These maps are:<br>• R2s.nii: map of R<sub>2,micro</sub><sup>∗</sup> [ms<sup>-1</sup>] for ‘AW’, ‘SY’, and ‘Pade’ options. Map of R<sub>2</sub><sup>∗</sup> [ms<sup>-1</sup>] for ‘Exp’ fit.<br>• OmegaSq.nii: map of 〈\(\Omega^2\) [rad<sup>2</sup> ms<sup>-2</sup>]. Not available for ‘Exp’ fit.<br>• TE0signal.nii: map of the initial signal amplitude S<sub>0</sub>.<br>• T2mol.nii: map of the inverse of effective transverse relaxation rate resulting from processes on the nanoscale [ms]<br>• AIC.nii: map of Akaike information criterion regarding the fitting procedure.<br>• MSE.nii: maps of the mean square error of the fitting procedure.<br>• DataMatrix.mat: matrix containing the data used for the fitting procedure.<br>• VoxelIndices.mat: vector containing the indices of the voxels corresponding to the analyzed data, which is restricted to the subcortical regions.<br>• Params.mat: structure containing the parameters used for the analysis.<br>Inside ‘modelfits’ there are also two folders corresponding to two different regimes that can describe the transverse relaxation decay: static dephasing regime (‘SDR’) or diffusion narrowing regime (‘DNR’). A modified Rsyst database with the inclusion of dinoflagellate and cyanobacteria taxa
