Moose (Alces alces) parturition dates, Sweden
<p>In northern environments, the period of access to high-quality forage is limited, exerting strong selective pressure to optimize the timing of parturition. We analysed timing and variation in moose parturition dates of 555 females at 18 study sites across 12ᵒ of latitude (56-68ᵒ N, 1,350 km) in Sweden. We found evidence for a spatial match of parturition timing to vegetation onset, but no evidence that moose adjust parturition to vegetation onset in a given year. We found a breakpoint at 64ᵒ N. Despite adaptation across latitudes, temporal divergences occurred. Females <64 ᵒN calved after vegetation onset and females >64 ᵒN calved before. Here, parturition before vegetation onset might be a strategy to optimize forage utilization time with the very short growing season. Highly seasonal environments such as at higher latitudes may make it advantageous to adapt parturition towards long-term climatic patterns by matching the most favourable period. Given the direction of temporal divergence, our study suggests that climate change may have less of an impact on moose parturition at northern latitudes than southern latitudes.</p>
Counts of winter ticks on live-captured moose in western US
<p>Data include counts of winter ticks (ticks.hind) along transects of variable length (transect.cm.hind) on the rumps of live-captured moose in 5 western US states (state). Other attribute data include the moose ID, capture date, local moose density (density.category), migratory status (migratory), presence of other ungulates on shared winter range (shared.winter.range). A suite of climate metrics are also included for each record specific to that capture location and year, labelled according to the biological season during which they were summarized (q=questing [fall]; d=dropoff [spring]; s=summer) as described in the manuscript. Metrics include the proprortionate snow cover (SnowProp), amount of snow water equivalent during midpoint and endpoint of season (SWEmid, SWEend), mean temperature (TempMean), number of days below 0 and -20 degrees C (TempDays0, TempDaysm20), average relative humidity daily minimum and maximum (RHmin, RHmax), cumulative precipitation (Precip), and landcover category (landcover). Lastly, also included are quadratic terms for some variables (_2) and 10-year averages of each metric spanning the study period, 2013-2022, (_avg). </p>
Wild reindeer, wolf and moose population dynamics in Eastern Finland
<p><i>Background.</i> The alternative prey hypothesis describes the mechanism for apparent competition whereby the mortality of the secondary prey species increases (and population size decreases) by the increased predation by the shared predator if the population size of the primary prey decreases. Apparent competition is a process where the abundance of two co-existing prey species are negatively associated because they share a mutual predator, which negatively affects the abundance of both prey. Here, we examined whether alternative prey and/or apparent competition hypothesis can explain the population dynamics and reproductive output of the secondary prey, wild forest reindeer (<i>Rangifer tarandus fennicus</i>) in Finland, in a predator-prey community in which moose (<i>Alces alces</i>) is the primary prey and the wolf (<i>Canis lupus</i>) is the generalist predator.</p> <p><i>Methods.</i> We examined a 22-year time series (1996 - 2017) to determine how the population size and the calf/female ratio of wild forest reindeer in Eastern Finland were related to the abundances of wolf and moose. Only moose population size was regulated by hunting. Summer predation of wolves on reindeer focuses on calves. We used least squares regression (GLS) models (for handling autocorrelated error structures and resulting pseudo-R<sup>2</sup>s) and generalized linear mixed (GLMs) models (for avoidance of negative predictions) to determine the relationships between abundances. We performed linear and general linear models for the calf/female ratio of reindeer.</p> <p><i>Results and Synthesis</i>. The trends in reindeer population size and moose abundance were almost identical: an increase during the first years and then a decrease until the last years of our study period. Wolf population size in turn did not show long-term trends. Change in reindeer population size between consecutive winters was related positively to the calf/female ratio. The calf/female ratio was negatively related to wolf population size, but the reindeer population size was related to the wolf population only when moose abundance was entered as another independent variable. The wolf population was not related to moose abundance even though it is likely to consist the majority of the prey biomass. Because reindeer and moose populations were positively associated, our results seemed to support the alternative prey hypothesis more than the apparent competition hypothesis. However, these two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive and the primary mechanism is difficult to distinguish as the system is heavily managed by moose hunting. The recovery of wild forest reindeer in eastern Finland probably requires ecosystem management involving both habitat restoration and control of species abundances.</p>

<ol> <li>With accelerated land conversion and global heating at northern latitudes, it becomes crucial to understand, how life histories of animals in extreme environments adapt to these changes. Animals may either adapt by adjusting foraging behaviour or through physiological responses, including adjusting their energy metabolism or both. Until now, it has been difficult to study such adaptations in free ranging animals due to methodological constraints that prevent extensive spatiotemporal coverage of ecological and physiological data.</li> <li>Through a novel approach of combining DNA-metabarcoding and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics, we aim to elucidate the links between diets and metabolism in Scandinavian moose <i>Alces alces</i> over three biogeographic zones using a unique dataset of 265 marked individuals.</li> <li>Based on 17 diet items, we identified four different classes of diet types that match browse species availability in respective ecoregions in northern Sweden. Individuals in the boreal zone consumed predominantly pine and had the least diverse diets, while individuals with highest diet diversity occurred in the coastal areas. Males exhibited lower average diet diversity than females.</li> <li>We identified several molecular markers indicating metabolic constraints linked to diet constraints in terms of food availability during winter. While animals consuming pine had higher lipid, phospocholine and glycerophosphocholine concentrations in their serum than other diet types, birch- and willow/aspen-rich diets exhibit elevated concentrations of several amino acids. The individuals with highest diet diversity had increased levels of ketone bodies, indicating extensive periods of starvation for these individuals.</li> <li>Our results show how the adaptive capacity of moose at the eco-physiological level varies over a large eco-geographic scale and how it responds to land use pressures. In light of extensive ongoing climate and land use changes, these findings pave the way for future scenario building for animal adaptive capacity.</li> </ol>
