Such feedback consists of suggested improvements or additions to data fields, for example a change in species identification or a newly determined georeference. The diagrams contrast two complementary mechanisms: (a) the original feedback loop (currently dominant); and (b) the emerging feedback pendulum (proposed for expansion). In a: (1) the user sends feedback to the provider (e.g., a given natural history museum); (2) if the provider makes a corresponding change to its database, the updated information is sent to the aggregator; and (3) that information becomes available for query by all users. In practice, because many providers do not consistently make such changes (denoted by an X), users do have access to updated information (dashed line). In b: (1) the user sends feedback to the aggregator; (2) the aggregator simultaneously both annotates the record (visible to all users) and sends the suggested information to the provider; (3) if the provider makes a corresponding change to its database, the updated information is sent to the aggregator; and (4) the aggregator makes the updated information available for query by all users. Note that even if a provider takes no action regarding the suggested information, the annotations placed by the aggregator are nevertheless available to users. Additionally, because the quantifications of data quality and use described in the text allow for benchmarks that can be tracked over time, we anticipate that the feedback pendulum will help providers become more successful in justifying and securing funding to make data improvements based on feedback from users.

<p>Although a guideline for reporting the results of community-based participatory research (CBPR) was published in 2010, the impact on the quality of reporting a CBPR on smoking cessation is unknown. Here we provide the raw data of a systematic review that assessed the impact of a 2010 community-based participatory research reporting guideline. on the quality of reporting a CBPR on smoking cessation. Specifically, we searched the MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases and included articles published up to October 2018 (PROSPERO: CRD42019111668). We assessed reporting quality using a 13-item checklist.</p>
Data from: Can the use of digital algorithms improve quality care? An example from Afghanistan
Background Quality of care is a difficult parameter to measure. With the introduction of digital algorithms based on the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), we are interested to understand if the adherence to the guidelines improved for a better quality of care for children under 5 years old. Methods More than one year after the introduction of digital algorithms, we carried out two cross sectional studies to assess the improvements in comparison with the situation prior to the implementation of the project, in two Basic Health Centres in Kabul province. One survey was carried out inside the consultation room and was based on the direct observation of 181 consultations of children aged 2 months to 5 years old, using a checklist completed by a senior physicians. The second survey queried 181 caretakers of children outside the health facility for their opinion about the consultation carried out through the tablet and prescriptions and medications given. Results We measured the quality of care as adherence to the IMCI's guidelines. The study evaluated the quality of the physical examination and the therapies prescribed with a special attention to antibiotic prescription. We noticed a dramatic improvement (p<0.05) of several indicators following the introduction of digital algorithms. The baseline physical examination was appropriate only for 23.8% [IC% 19.9-28.1] of the patients, 34.5% [IC% 30.0-39.2] received a correct treatment and 86.1% [IC% 82.4-89.2] received at least one antibiotic. With the introduction of digital algorithms, these indicators statistically improved respectively to 84.0% [IC% 77.9-88.6], >85% and less than 30%. Conclusions Our findings suggest that digital algorithms improve quality of care by applying the guidelines more effectively. Our experience should encourage to test this tool in different settings and to scale up its use at province/state level.
Data from: Temporal road closures improve habitat quality for wildlife
Increasing levels of human activity threaten wildlife populations through direct mortality, habitat degradation, and habitat fragmentation. Area closures can improve habitat quality for wildlife, but may be difficult to achieve where tourism or other economic drivers are a priority. Temporal closures that limit human use during specific times of day have potential to increase habitat quality for wildlife, while continuing to provide opportunities for human use. However, the effectiveness of daily temporal closures has not been tested. We assessed how implementation of a temporal road closure affected wildlife movements in Banff National Park. Parks Canada closed a popular 17 km stretch of road between 2000 and 0800 hours to improve habitat quality for wildlife. We assessed the effectiveness of the closure on nine mammal species using three sets of data: remote cameras, road surveys, and grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) GPS data. In all three analyses, wildlife detection rates on the road doubled during the closure while remaining unchanged in reference areas. Our strong and consistent results suggest temporal closures are an important conservation tool that can increase habitat quality for wildlife while minimizing effects on people.

<p>Females in mutually ornamented species are often less conspicuously ornamented than their male conspecifics. It has been hypothesized that offspring quality may decrease if females invest more resources into ornaments at the expense of resources in eggs. An experiment was carried out to test whether natural variation in carotenoid in the eggs from a wild population of Arctic charr (<em>Salvelinus alpinus</em>) was associated with survival and growth of their offspring until hatching. Wild Arctic charr were caught at a spawning ground during the spawning period. Eggs from two different females, one female with yellowish carotenoid-rich eggs and one with paler eggs, were fertilized by sperm from the same male. This was repeated until gametes were collected from 42 females and 21 males, giving a total of 21 groups. After fertilization, the zygotes from each of the two females were reared in four replicated groups. These 168 groups were reared separately until hatching when the surviving larvae were counted and their body length measured. For the two response variables survival and body length at hatching, no effect was demonstrated of any of the predictors (i) amount of carotenoid in the unfertilized eggs, (ii) the mothers' body condition or (iii) ornament intensity of their red carotenoid-based abdominal ornament. Thus, this study gives no support for the hypothesis that females investing less carotenoid into their eggs suffer from decreased offspring quality until hatching. This lack of association between female ornament intensity and their fitness is not as expected if female ornaments evolved due to direct sexual selection from males on the more ornamented females ("direct selection hypothesis").</p>
