Figure 1 in A new rhinoceros clade from the Pleistocene of Asia sheds light on mammal dispersals to the Philippines

Figure 1. Physiogeographical map of South-East Asia showing possible dispersal routes for Nesorhinus. Coloured lands account for the present zoogeographic regions. Palaearctic in purple, Sino-Japanese in green-blue, Indo-Malayan in green, Australasian in orange and Australian in maroon (after Holt et al., 2013). The Palaearctic–Oriental biogeographic boundary (dashed line) has been determined from several palaeontological studies (see, for instance: Norton & Braun, 2011). The different hypothesized dispersal paths are numbered: (1) for the Indo-Malayan route (Early and Middle Pleistocene), (2) for the Sino-Malayan route (Late Pleistocene), both ending in Java Island in the south (De Vos & Long, 2001) and (3) for the Sino-Wallacean route following von Koenigswald (1956) and which we are reviving here.

Javan Rhinoceros (NHMW-Zoo-MAMM 8198/ST319)

3D scan of a mounted Javan rhinoceros (*Rhinoceros sondaicus*). When the animal was first discovered and described in the 13th century, it lived in rainforests throughout Southeast Asia. According to the latest estimate, there are 73 animals left, all confined to the Ujung Kulon National Park at the western tip of Java in Indonesia. The fourteen-month-old male on display at the museum was captured at the end of the 18th century and mounted in 1801, making it one of the oldest mounted animals at the NHM Vienna. The Javan rhinoceros is Number 89 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 35 of the NHM Vienna. **Specimen**: *Rhinoceros sondaicus* Desmarest, 1822 **Inventory number**: NHMW-Zoo-MAMM 8198/ST319 **Collection**: Natural History Museum Vienna, 1st Zoological Dept., Mammal Coll. (curator: Frank E. Zachos) Find out more about the NHMW [here](http://www.nhm-wien.ac.at/en). Scanned and edited by Anna Haider & Viola Winkler (NHMW) Scanner: Artec Leo.
