The global distribution and drivers of wood density across angiosperms and gymnosperms and their impact on forest carbon stocks (Data and Plots)

Abstract:

The density of wood is a key indicator of trees’ carbon investment strategies, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here, we analyze information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially-explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to ~30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Therefore, our research contributes to a deeper understanding of terrestrial biomass distribution and how environmental changes and disturbances impact forest ecosystems.

This repository only provides the folders of 'Data' and 'Plots' that are needed for for the repository on GitHub: https://github.com/LidongMo/GlobalWoodDensityProject

Aboveground carbon stocks and dynamics in Andean forests

This dataset (Andean_AGB.xlsx) has the data employed in the paper entitled Old-growth Andean forests as globally important carbon sinks and future carbon refuges. The data was compiled as the results of the work of several research teams spread out across the Andean region. The information available here has data about aboveground carbon stocks and dynamics and the main explanatory variables, such as climate and symbiotic root associations.

Tree species richness and soil organic carbon stock

Recently, the perspectives for the stronger persistence of soil organic carbon (SOC) caused by the higher molecular diversity of organic compounds were proposed. Therefore, the effects of tree species richness and composition on the diversity of molecular components of SOC need to be explored. In this study, we collected data on tree species diversity and composition, SOC concentration, chemical composition, litter and fine root properties, and examined the relationships between the richness, composition and functional diversity of tree species, and the evenness of SOC chemical compositions at a molecular level by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, across six natural forest types encompassing a diversity gradient, ranging from cold temperate to tropical forests. Across the range, tree species richness correlated to the evenness of SOC chemical components through tree species composition. The negative correlation of evenness of SOC chemical components with tree species composition and the positive correlation of evenness of SOC chemical components with tree functional diversity were found. The positive correlation of the evenness of SOC chemical components with indicator tree species. These findings suggest that the indicator tree species conservation might be preferable to simply increasing tree species richness, for enhancing the potential resistance of SOC to decomposition.

Data from : Quantifying the Effect Size of Management Actions on Aboveground Carbon Stocks in Forest Plantations

These data were extracted from publications listed in the supplemental data associated with the manuscript. The data include information on the aboveground carbon biomass of individual tree crops in pure versus interplanted stands, the aboveground biomass stocks of NPK fertilized versus unfertilized forest plantations, and the aboveground carbon stocks of thinned versus unthinned forest plantations. Additionally, the data contains other attributes of the studies that were used as moderator variables in the meta-analysis. For further details on how missing standard deviations were imputed, please refer to the methods section of the manuscript.
