Data from: Investigating the interaction of terbinafine with xanthenes dye for its feasible determination applying resonance Rayleigh scattering technique

<p>Terbinafine hydrochloride is a potent antifungal drug indicated for oral and topical treatment of mycoses. A resonance Rayleigh scattering method was developed for the determination of terbinafine hydrochloride through feasible complexation reaction with erythrosine B reagent. In a weak acidic medium (acetate buffer, pH 5.0), terbinafine hydrochloride can react with erythrosine B through virtue of hydrophobic force and electrostatic attraction to form an ion-association complex. The reaction resulted in the appearance of new resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) peak at 369 nm. The RRS peak was increased by increasing the concentration of terbinafine hydrochloride in the linear range of 0.1–1.5 µg/mL. All the interaction conditions (erythrosine B concentration, buffer volume, diluting solvent and pH) were optimized. The detection limit was 0.029 µg/mL while the quantitation limit was 0.089 µg/mL. The suggested method after its validation was successfully applied for the determination of terbinafine hydrochloride in different pharmaceutical formulations (tablets and cream) with sufficient recovery.</p>

Data from: Preparation of core–shell structured CaCO 3 microspheres as rapid and recyclable adsorbent for anionic dyes

Core–shell structured CaCO3 microspheres (MSs) were prepared by a facile, one-pot method at room temperature. The adsorbent dosage and adsorption time of the obtained CaCO3 MSs were investigated. The results suggest that these CaCO3 MSs can rapidly and efficiently remove 99–100% of anionic dyes within the first 2 min. The obtained CaCO3 MSs have a high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (211.77 m2 g−1). In addition, the maximum adsorption capacity of the obtained CaCO3 MSs towards Congo red was 99.6 mg g−1. We also found that the core–shell structured CaCO3 MSs have a high recycling capability for removing dyes from water. Our results demonstrate that the prepared core–shell structured CaCO3 MSs can be used as an ideal, rapid, efficient and recyclable adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution.

Data from: Nature of the optical band shapes in polymethine dyes and H-aggregates: dozy chaos and excitons. Comparison with dimers, H*- and J-aggregates

Results on the theoretical explanation of the shape of optical bands in polymethine dyes, their dimers and aggregates are summarized. The theoretical dependence of the shape of optical bands for the dye monomers in the vinylogous series in line with a change in the solvent polarity is considered. A simple physical (analytical) model of the shape of optical absorption bands in H-aggregates of polymethine dyes is developed based on taking the dozy-chaos dynamics of the transient state and the Frenkel exciton effect in the theory of molecular quantum transitions into account. As an example, the details of the experimental shape of one of the known H-bands are well reproduced by this analytical model under the assumption that the main optical chromophore of H-aggregates is a tetramer resulting from the two most probable processes of inelastic binary collisions in sequence: first, monomers between themselves, and then, between the resulting dimers. The obtained results indicate that in contrast with the compact structure of J-aggregates (brickwork structure), the structure of H-aggregates is not the compact pack-of-cards structure, as stated in the literature, but a loose alternate structure. Based on this theoretical model, a simple general (analytical) method for treating the more complex shapes of optical bands in polymethine dyes in comparison with the H-band under consideration is proposed. This method mirrors the physical process of molecular aggregates forming in liquid solutions: aggregates are generated in the most probable processes of inelastic multiple binary collisions between polymethine species generally differing in complexity. The results obtained are given against a background of the theoretical results on the shape of optical bands in polymethine dyes and their aggregates (dimers, H*- and J-aggregates) previously obtained by V.V.E.

Data from: Photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide–TiO2 thin films sensitized by natural dyes extracted from Bactris guineensis

This study synthesized and characterized composites of graphene oxide and TiO2 (GO-TiO2). GO-TiO2 thin films were deposited using the Doctor Blade technique. Subsequently, the thin films were sensitized with a natural dye extracted from a Colombian source (Bactris guineensis). Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and diffuse reflectance measurements were used for physicochemical characterization. All the samples were polycrystalline in nature, and the diffraction signals corresponded to the TiO2 anatase crystalline phase. Raman spectroscopy and FT-IR verified the synthesis of composite thin films, and the SEM analysis confirmed the TiO2 films morphological modification after the process of GO incorporation and sensitization. XPS results suggested a possibility of appearance of Titanium (III) through the formation of oxygen vacancies (Ov). Furthermore, the optical results indicated that the presence of the natural sensitizer and GO improved the optical properties of TiO2 in the visible range. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) was studied under visible irradiation in aqueous solution, and pseudo-first order model was used to obtain kinetic information about photocatalytic degradation. These results indicated that the presence of GO has an important synergistic effect in conjunction with the natural sensitizer, reaching a photocatalytic yield of 33%.

Data from: Thioflavin T as an amyloid dye: fibril quantification, optimal concentration and effect on aggregation

Formation of amyloid fibrils underlies a wide range of human disorders, including Alzheimer's and prion diseases. The amyloid fibrils can be readily detected thanks to thioflavin T (ThT), a small molecule that gives strong fluorescence upon binding to amyloids. Using the amyloid fibrils of Aβ40 and Aβ42 involved in Alzheimer's disease, and of yeast prion protein Ure2, here we study three aspects of ThT binding to amyloids: quantification of amyloid fibrils using ThT, the optimal ThT concentration for monitoring amyloid formation and the effect of ThT on aggregation kinetics. We show that ThT fluorescence correlates linearly with amyloid concentration over ThT concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 500 µM. At a given amyloid concentration, the plot of ThT fluorescence versus ThT concentration exhibits a bell-shaped curve. The maximal fluorescence signal depends mostly on the total ThT concentration, rather than amyloid to ThT ratio. For the three proteins investigated, the maximal fluorescence is observed at ThT concentrations of 20–50 µM. Aggregation kinetics experiments in the presence of different ThT concentrations show that ThT has little effect on aggregation at concentrations of 20 µM or lower. ThT at concentrations of 50 µM or more could affect the shape of the aggregation curves, but this effect is protein-dependent and not universal.

Facile approach to defect-rich ZnO photocatalysts for visible light dye degradation

<p>We established an effective synthesis approach to prepare planar-defect-rich-zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles via a facile coprecipitation technique. The effect of acetate, sulfate, and nitrate salt precursors along with synthesis temperature on the physiochemical behavior of ZnO nanoparticles was explored. Various analytical techniques were utilized to illustrate the present phases, intrinsic structure, extrinsic morphology, and optical properties of the final products. Pure hexagonal wurtzite phase for the ZnO nanoparticles with spherical morphology ranging from 30 nm to 70 nm in size displayed superior photocatalytic activity owing to the presence of a high density of dislocation and stacking faults. A visible-light photocatalytic degradation study of methylene blue and rhodamine B dye was carried out. Prepared ZnO nanoparticles were able to degrade over 93% of 22 MB dye and 98.85% RhB dye in an hour. This excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity is credited to the porous nature of the nanoparticles offering increased surface area and the presence of planar defects which effectively repress electron-hole recombination by taking care of charge carrier trapping and transferring.</p>
