Size 93/4 in. by 63/4 in.; foll. 572. Twenty-three lines in a page.

A large Commentary on a letter on mystic subject, which Saiyid Ḥâtim b. Aḥmad al-Ahdal Ḥusainî of Mokha (d. in Muḥarram, 1013) wrote, A.H. 1004, to the author of this Commentary, who was his pupil.

The name of the latter occurs on fol. 45v., viz., ‘ABD AL-ḲÂDIR B. SHAIKH AL-‘AIDARÛS. He belonged to the ‘Alawî family, was born A.H. 978, and died A.H. 1038, at Aḥmadâbâd.1 He wrote this commentary after the death of Ḥâtim, A.H. 1016, and entitled it (fol. 2v.) الزهر الباسم من روض الاستاذ حاتم . Cf. regarding Ḥâtim, Catal. Mus. Brit. 309a.

The commentary is preceded by a long memoir of Ḥâtim, which contains numerous extracts from his writings and poems; also another short letter of his, addressed to Shaikh ‘Abd al-wahhâb Hindi, with ample comments; and (fol. 41v.) a full account of his correspondence with the author, which was miraculously continued after his death. It concludes on fol.

The commentary begins with the Basmalah. The first words of the letter are (fol.53):حمدا لك يا من عمّ الخلق احسانه . The commentary, which is much swelled by extracts from other works and long quotations of poetry, ends, after discussing (from fol. 435) the very signature of the letter, on fol.466, as follows:هذا آخر الشرح واول الفتح قلت وانما خصصت هذه الرسالة من بين الرسائل لكثرة ما اشتملت عليه من الفوائد و الفضائل و قد احتوت على جملة من مسائل الصوفية و لعمرى انها جمعت التصوف كله الخ.

In the remaining part of the work the author treats in a very prolix manner of Ṣûfism and Saints in general; he also gives an account of his Shaikhs and his spiritual pedigree. In the appendix ( خاتمة الكتاب fol. 558v.) he speaks of the asking of forgiveness (الاستغفار) , and winds up with a long Ḳaṣîdah, each verse of which begins:استغفرُ اللهَ . The date of the work (fol.

Well written by two hands. On the margin are numerous corrections and additions, which are apparently due to a collation with a revised edition of the work. Worm-eaten towards the end.

Cat. 231, iii.

1 These statements are derived from المشرع المروى , a biographical history of the ‘Alawî family, which will be described under no. 717. There the name of the author is given in full, as follows: ‘Abd al-ḳâdir b. Shaikh b. ‘Abdallah b. Shaikh b. ‘Abdallah al-‘Aidarûs (fol. 121).

Ethical Considerations in Utilizing Technology to Combat Economic Crime

This presentation was offered by Dr. Costantino Grasso (please see bio below), during the international conference entitled “Economic Crime in the Age of Technology (ECAT),” which was dedicated to exploring the still untapped potential of utilizing technological advancements to counter economic crime. ECAT was held both in person at Manchester Law School and online on Zoon on the 5th of July 2023. The presentation was entitled “Ethical Considerations in Utilizing Technology to Combat Economic Crime”.

Abstract
The rapid advancements in technology have paved the way for innovative solutions in combating economic crime. Despite the evident innovative potential of technology in this area, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze the potential risks and ethical dilemmas associated with these technological advancements. This presentation will discuss this issue, focusing on the need to establish not only internal controls but also external and independent monitoring systems on how these new technologies can be integrated for the purpose of countering financial crime, particularly within the corporate environment.

Speaker’s Bio
Costantino is an Associate Professor in Business and Law at Manchester Law School, Founder and Editor in Chief of the Corporate Crime Observatory and the Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics Blog. He specializes in corporate and economic crime, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and whistleblowing. He serves as an international expert on corruption and good governance for the Council of Europe and has acted as a Principal Investigator for both EU-funded and NATO-funded international research projects.

The international conference entitled “Economic Crime in the Age of Technology (ECAT)” was organized by Dr. Costantino Grasso - Associate Professor in Law at Manchester Law School, Dr. Donato Vozza - Senior Lecturer in Law at Roehampton University, and Dr. Alessio Faccia - Assistant Professor in Finance at the University of Birmingham Dubai. Supplemental data for: Current ethics policies in 36 preprint servers

Preprints, which are non–peer-reviewed articles, offer a rapid dissemination of information, and have gained traction in academic publishing, often serving as the publishing precursors of peer-reviewed journals. Given that many peer-reviewed journals, with often strict ethics policies, allow the prior publication of papers as preprints, we were interested in appreciating the ethics policies in place in preprint servers. We selected 36 preprint servers from the ASAPbio list to base our assessment. We found that that only 8% of analyzed preprint servers contained a dedicated section on the server's ethics policy. As documents that purportedly transmit scientific information, including data-based evidence, we believe that there is a need to fortify the stringency of ethics policies in preprint servers, even standardize them across ASAPbio-listed preprint servers.

Towards a practical framework to "ethics by design" data sharing and machine learning applications

Responsible AI and data-driven applications can only be developed when teams integrate the ethical principles directly into the development process. An important prerequisite is the involvement of a diverse group of stakeholders who build and are affected by AI and data systems. We present a practical framework that helps teams build trustworthy AI systems and data strategies by combining expertise and training from philosophy, law, machine learning and design.

Happiness in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics

This contribution is focused on the comparison between book I and book X of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, whrein two different interpretations of the notion of happiness are provided. One can find into book I, in fact, a general account of happiness and of the relations between its own composing parts. Into book X, instead, the content of happiness is specified by a concrete model of complete life, with regard to the problematic implications between political life and contemplative life.

Data from: The interactions of ethical notions and moral values of immediate stakeholders of immunisation services in two Indian states: a qualitative study
OBJECTIVES: This study examines the existing norms regarding immunization within the communities and the ethical notions that govern the action of different health professionals and their collective synergistic or conflicting effect on governance of the programme. Design: We used descriptive and analytical qualitative methods as it suited the research question. SETTING: The data was collected from areas under 16 Primary Health Centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu identified through three-step sampling process. PARTICIPANTS: This involved in-depth interview with stakeholders including providers, beneficiaries and other stakeholders, focus group discussions with mother of under five children and participant and non-participant observations of vaccination related activities. RESULTS: Unlike most other ethical analysis that looks at ethics of vaccination policies, the interactions of normative principles and notions are analysed in this article. Moral obligation of parents towards their children, beneficence of health care providers and the utilitarian aspirations of the state are the key normative principles involved. Our analysis points to the interplay of both synergy and conflict in ethical notions and moral values in the context of immunisation services. Paternalistic interventions like special immunisation campaigns against polio and Japanese encephalitis are a case in point: they generate conflict at the normative level and create mistrust. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of vaccination policies and programmes need to go beyond factors that assess monitory benefits or herd immunity. Understanding the interactions normative notions that shape the social organisation of the providers and the users of vaccination is important in creating a sustainable environment for the programme.
