Soil Characteristics Following a Lightning-Initiated Fire at MacKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1998)
We evaluated soil characteristics after a lightning-initiated fire. Following the fire in July 1998, 25 experimental plots were established on the eastern edge of MacKenzie Flats at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Ten of these plots were located in a Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama)-dominated site, while 15 were established in another area dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama). All plots were oriented along a topographic gradient that ran in an east-west direction. At three topographic locations within each plot, soil samples were taken at two depths from an area covered by perennial grass as well as an area devoid of vegetation. Soil samples were collected in July 1998 and analyzed for moisture content and soil texture.
Post-Fire Response of Perennial Grass Communities at McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1998 and 2001)
We evaluated the effects of a lightning-initiated fire on responses of vegetation communities. Following a fire in July 1998, 25 experimental plots were established on the eastern edge of MacKenzie Flats at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Ten of these plots were located in a Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama)- dominated site, while 15 were established in another area dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama). We evaluated basal and aerial cover of all plant species at the community level using a vertical line point intercept method along transects within plots. Sampling was conducted immediately after the fire during the last week of July 1998, and again in September and October of 2001.
Post-Fire Responses of Perennial Grass Populations at McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National WIldlife Refuge, New Mexico (1998 and 2001)
We evaluated the effects of a lightning-initiated fire on resprouting responses of perennial grasses at the population level. Following a fire in July 1998, 25 experimental plots were established on the eastern edge of MacKenzie Flats at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. Ten of these plots were located in a Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama)-dominated site, while 15 were established in an area dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama). We evaluated basal cover of perennial grasses in systematically positioned quadrats (subsamples) within plots immediately after the fire (last week of July 1998), and in September-October 2001.
Bird observations on the tidal flats of the Virginia Coast Reserve, 2016-2018
This dataset contains data on observations of birds on tidal flats along the Virginia portion of the Delmarva Peninsula, along the Atlantic side as part of the dissertation research of Alice Besterman. The first data table (ShorebirdswithZerosV1a.csv) has summary information on bird activities broken down by patch type and relation to tide. Shorebirds were surveyed on 9 intertidal mudflats from late April through end of May 2016. Surveys conducted within 3-5 hours of low tide. Scans last 15 minutes or less. Data table 2 (2018_patchscale_long.csv) contains data from surveys of shorebirds on 36 intertidal mudflats. Surveys conducted in May 2018 at low tide. Tidal flats were visited a single time, and scanned a single time. Scans lasted 15 minutes or less. Only target species were counted and microhabitat-use was recorded. A "wide" version of the data with columns of species/cover is also provided as a .zip file. Data table 3 (ContinSampFinala.csv) contains data collected during focal behavioral observations of shorebirds on intertidal mudflats. Data were collected from 9 sites in 2016 between late April and the end of May during low tide. Observations lasted up to 3 minutes or less if observer lost sight of the bird or bird left the site. Data table 4 (allbirds2a.csv) contains surveys of shorebirds using mudflats in May 2018. Sites were visited a single time during low tide. Tidal flats were scanned a single time, and scans lasted 15 minutes or less. This data table differs from Data table 2 in that all shorebird species of interest were counted (not just target species for behavioral analyses), and microhabitat-use data were not included. Data table 5 (InstantSampFinala.csv) contains data collected during focal behavioral observations of shorebirds on intertidal mudflats. Data were collected from 9 sites in 2016 between late April and the end of May during low tide. Observations lasted up to 3 minutes or less if observer lost sight of the bird or bird left the site.
Invertebrates on the tidal flats of the Virginia Coast, May 2016
Invertebrate composition, size and mass measurements were taken on tidal flats on the Virginia Coast. Data table 1 (Invertebrates2016a.csv): Invertebrates collected from mudflats during May 2016. Cores were 15 cm inner diameter and 10 cm deep, all epifauna and infauna collected. If cores were collected from macroalgal patch then macroalgae and epifauna were also taken. Data table 2 (InvCleanwZerosa.csv): Abundances and weights of invertebrates collected from mudflats May 2018. Cores were 7 cm inner diameter and 7 cm deep. Eight cores were collected per site from randomly selected sampling locations along a 120 m transect. 600 micron mesh used, all epifauna and infauna within core area collected. Data table 3 (Site_codes_Lat_Lon_2016_2018.csv): contains location information on sampling sites during 2016 and 2018.
Benthic Chlorophyll and Macroalgae on an Experimentally-manipulated Tidal Flat on the Virginia Coast, 2016-2017
In 2016 a Before-After-Control-Impact experimental design was used to test if the removal of macroalgae from a heavily vegetated mudflat would result in an increase in MPB biomass (Smith 2002). Data Table 1 (BCL_BACIexpa.csv):Benthic chlorophyll samples collected from mudflat where experimental macroalgal removal was conducted. Samples collected haphazardly from 3500 m^2 plots. Sediment cores were 1 cm inner diameter and 2 cm deep. Data Table 2 (BCL_MAMPBa.csv):Survey data where macroalgal mats were sampled and sediment beneath mats sampled for benthic chlorophyll. This data table contains benthic chlorophyll data. Corresponding macroalgal mass data found in MAmass_MAMPBa.csv. Sediment cores were 1 cm inner diameter and 2 cm deep. Three subsamples taken (A,B,C). Data Table 3 (MAmass_MAMPBa.csv): Survey data where macroalgal mats were sampled and sediment beneath mats sampled for benthic chlorophyll. This data table contains macroalgal mass data. Corresponding chlorophyll data found in BCL_MAMPBa.csv
Data From: Contrasting physiological traits of shade tolerance in Pinus and Podocarpaceae native to a tropical Vietnamese forest: Insight from an aberrant flat-leaved pine
<p>The absence of pines from tropical forests is a puzzling biogeographical oddity potentially explained by traits of shade intolerance. <i>Pinus krempfii</i>, a flat-leaved pine endemic to the Central Highlands of Vietnam, provides a notable exception as it seems to successfully compete with shade-tolerant tropical species. Here, we test the hypothesis that successful conifer performance at the juvenile stage depends on physiological traits of shade tolerance by comparing the physiological characteristics of <i>P. krempfii </i>to coexisting species from the genus <i>Pinus</i> and from the Podocarpaceae, a relatively abundant and shade tolerant conifer family found in pantropical forests. We examined leaf photosynthetic, respiratory and biochemical traits. Additionally, we compiled attainable maximum photosynthesis, maximum RuBP carboxylation (<i>Vc</i>max) and maximum electron transport (<i>J</i>max) values for <i>Pinus</i> and Podocarpaceae species from the literature. In our literature compilation, <i>P. krempfii </i>was intermediate between <i>Pinus</i> and Podocarpaceae in its maximum photosynthesis and its <i>Vc</i>max. <i>Pinus</i> exhibited a higher <i>Vc</i>max than Podocarpaceae, resulting in a less steep slope in the linear relationship between <i>J</i>max and <i>Vc</i>max. These results suggest that <i>Pinus </i>may be more shade intolerant than Podocarpaceae with <i>P. krempfii </i>falling between the two groups. However, in contrast, Vietnamese conifers' leaf mass per areas and biochemical traits did not highlight the same intermediate nature of <i>P. krempfii</i>. Furthermore, regardless of leaf shape or family assignation, all species demonstrated a common carbon gain efficiency. Overall, our findings highlight the importance of shade tolerance for conifer survival in tropical forests. However, they also demonstrate a diversity of shade tolerance strategies, all of which lead to the persistence of Vietnamese juvenile conifers in low-light tropical understories.</p>

Improved small-angle x-ray scattering of nanoparticle self-assembly using a cell with a flat liquid surface
<p>One important way of forming nanostructures entails the assembly of nanoparticle (NP) monolayers at a liquid surface. Probing this assembly of 11.8-nm-diameter iron oxide NPs by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is studied using cells with walls at angles designed to significantly reduce the size of the meniscus. This enables the collection of much larger signals in the SAXS images of ordered arrays of NPs at liquid/gas interfaces, as is needed for kinetics studies and x-ray exposure minimization, along with the observation of extremely high degrees of order. Meniscus flattening and improved signal collection are demonstrated for the assembly of ordered arrays of iron oxide NP monolayers at a diethylene glycol surface.</p>

Flat Axe Mould
Culture: [Bronze Age](http://n2t.net/ark:/99152/p0gjgrs6qb2) Material: Stone Accession No: HCA 212 Current Location [The Hunt Museum](https://www.huntmuseum.com/), [Limerick](https://www.geonames.org/7778675/limerick-city.html). An [Early Bronze Age]( http://n2t.net/ark:/99152/p0kh9dshs59) [casting mould](http://vocab.getty.edu/page/aat/300422800) for flat copper or bronze tools. One face contains a matrix for a flat axe and a smaller axe or chisel-like implement; the opposing one has a matrix for a lightly larger flat axe. The edges of the mould have been shaped by pecking, the face with the matrix remains irregular suggesting it is unlikely a cover would have been fitted on top. As the Bronze Age progressed, more complex two-piece moulds were developed. [More](https://tinyurl.com/yckm62mc). Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
