Data from: Organic carbon, grain size, elemental/isotopic composition

Salt marshes and seagrass meadows can sequester and store high quantities of organic carbon (OC) in their sediments relative to other marine and terrestrial habitats. Assessing carbon stocks, carbon sources, and the transfer of carbon between habitats within coastal seascapes are each integral in identifying the role of blue carbon habitats in coastal carbon cycling. Here, we quantified carbon stocks, sources, and exchanges in seagrass meadows, salt marshes, and unvegetated sediments in six bays along the Pacific coast of California. The salt marshes studied here contained approximately twice as much OC as did seagrass meadows, 23.51 ± 1.77 kg OC m-3 compared to 11.01 ± 1.18 kg OC m-3, respectively. Both seagrass and salt marsh sediment carbon stocks were higher than previous estimates from this region but lower than global and U.S.-wide averages, respectively. Seagrass-derived carbon was deposited annually into adjacent marshes during fall seagrass senescence. However, isotope mixing models estimate that negligible amounts of this seagrass material were ultimately buried in underlying sediment. Rather, the vast majority of OC in sediment across sites was likely derived from planktonic/benthic diatoms and C3 salt marsh plants.

Near Real-Time MODIS/Terra L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing, Version 1
This data set represents an updated version of the MODIS Snow Covered Area and Grain-size (MODSCAG) and MODIS Dust Radiative Forcing in Snow (MODDRF) data sets previously produced by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Data are derived from NASA LANCE near real-time MODIS/Terra surface reflectance data (MOD09GA_NRT) but are not themselves near real-time, nor part of NASA LANCE. This data set contains the following parameters: snow fraction, snow grain size (from the SCAG algorithm), vegetation fraction, rock fraction, ice fraction, shade fraction, deltavis, radiative forcing, and optical snow grain size (from the DRFS algorithm). Data are available from 1 November 2023 to the present for 16 regions in North America, and from 01 April 2025 to present over the South Island of New Zealand and the Andes mountains in Chile. Additional tiles will be added over time until global coverage is reached. These data are provided in netCDF format.

Sediment grain size dataset of intertidal shellfish sandbanks within Ría de Arousa, Spain

The GEOMA Research group from the University of Vigo implements a solution to improve the knowledge of the sediment dynamics, the stability of the ecosystem substratum, and its response to the predicted Climate Change outcome (INTERM). The INTERM solution is based on sedimentological monitoring of sandbanks at specific locations of clam exploitation in the Ría de Arousa (Pontevedra, Spain).

Since 2022, we collected sediments in seven locations with current (Camaxe, Xastelas, O Sarrido, Fefiñans, O Bohido, and Lavanqueira) or stopped (Lombos de Ulla) shellfish activity. The sediment grain size distribution was determined by dry and wet sieving using meshes of 2, 1, 0.5, 0.25, 0.125, and 0.063 mm. We separate the sediment grain size fraction larger and smaller than 0.063mm by wet sieving. The grain size distribution of the grains larger than 0.063 was determined by dry sieving whereas for the grains smaller than 0.063 by the pipette method (see Folk, R. L. (1980). Petrology of sedimentary rocks. Hemphill publishing company).

This study is part of the “Accelerating and upscaling transformational adaptation in Europe: demonstration of water-related innovation packages (TRANSFORMAR)" coordinated by the Universiteit Antwerpen and funded by the European Union’s Horizon program (H2020_101036683).

This version:

Includes new grain size measurements performed on samples collected in February 2025

Corrects bugs detected in the weight of the fine fraction. The grain size endmembers of Tengchongbeihai wetland sediments over the past 46 ka

Here, we present a grain size end-member analysis for Tengchongbeihai wetland sediments from southwestern China to investigate the paleo-hydroclimate changes since the late MIS3. The overall low fine silt (EM2) content before ~16.5 cal ka BP resulted from weak catchment erosion indicating weak ISM during cold glacial while the increasing trend thereafter indicates the ISM strengthened during the last deglaciation and Holocene. Such an orbital ISM evolution resembles to the insolation gradient between 25°N and 25°S during the boreal summer periods, which implies the transequatorial insolation difference could be an alternative explanation for the orbital scale low latitude hydroclimate changes. The striking peaks of coarse component (EM3) around ~12, 16, 24, 29, 32 and 39 cal ka BP were related to significant water level descending indicating the millennial ISM collapse corresponding to the YD and Heinrich events. However, the absence of sawtooth feature as the NGRIP δ18O and the well correspondence to the Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the ISM collapses evidence the complementary role of low latitude climate for the North Atlantic climate on the millennial scale hydroclimate variabilities.
