The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Hubbard Brook (HBR) contains animal abundance of Archilochus colubris (ruby-throated hummingbird) measurements in numberPer10Hectares units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Novel hybrid finds a peri-urban niche: Allen's Hummingbirds in southern California

<p>Species range expansions and contractions can have ecological and genetic consequences, and thus are important areas of study for conservation. Hybridization and introgression are not uncommon in closely related populations that experience secondary contact during a range expansion. Allen's Hummingbird (<i>Selasphorus sasin</i>) in California comprises two subspecies: the migratory <i>S. s. sasin,</i> which winters in central Mexico and breeds in central and northern California, and the resident <i>S. s. sedentarius</i>, which lives and breeds year-round on several of the Channel Islands off the California coast. Within recent decades, Allen's Hummingbirds have been found living and breeding year-round in the southern California peri-urban mainland near Los Angeles. Ornithologists assumed that the L.A. birds were an expansion of the island subspecies, <i>S. s. sedentarius</i> due to similar but very subtle morphological characteristics. <span>However, the genetic relationships among the three putative populations of Allen's hummingbird—migratory, southern California mainland, and island—are unknown. We investigated these relationships by analyzing variation of single nucleotide polymorphisms from the three geographic regions where S. sasin are present. Our population genomic analyses indicate that </span><i><span>S. sasin</span></i><span> hummingbirds inhabiting mainland southern California are a hybrid </span><span>population resulting from admixture between <i>S. s. sasin</i> and <i>S. s. sedentarius</i>. From one perspective, these results may be interpreted as a positive development for <i>S. s. sasin</i> as the growing population represent an overall increase in the <i>S. sasin</i> population, and the expanding population contains a significant representation of <i>S. s. sasin</i> alleles.</span></p>

Traces of air and body temperature in six hummingbird species in the Andes

<p>Torpor is thought to be particularly important for small endotherms occupying cold environments and with limited fat reserves to fuel metabolism. It remains mysterious why, among birds, torpor is both rare and variable in extent. We investigated torpor in a hummingbird community at ~3,800 m a.s.l. in the tropical Andes by monitoring body temperature (<i>T</i><sub>b</sub>) in 26 individuals of six species held captive overnight and experiencing natural air temperature (<i>T</i><sub>a</sub>) patterns. All species used pronounced torpor, with one <i>Metallura phoebe</i> reaching a minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> of 3.26 °C, the lowest value yet reported for any bird or non-hibernating mammal. The extent and duration of nocturnal torpor varied among species, with overnight body mass (<i>M</i><sub>b</sub>) loss negatively correlated with both minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> and bout duration. We found a significant phylogenetic signal for minimum <i>T</i><sub>b</sub> and overnight <i>M</i><sub>b</sub> loss, consistent with evolutionarily conserved thermoregulatory traits. Our findings suggest deep torpor is routine for high Andean hummingbirds, but evolved species differences affect its depth.</p>

Glucose transporter expression and regulation following a fast in the ruby-throated hummingbird, Archilochus colubris

Hummingbirds, subsisting almost exclusively on nectar sugar, face extreme challenges to blood sugar regulation. The capacity for transmembrane sugar transport is mediated by the activity of facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs) and their localisation to the plasma membrane (PM). In this study, we determined the relative protein abundance of GLUT1, GLUT2, GLUT3, and GLUT5 via immunoblot using custom antibodies in whole-tissue and PM fractions of flight-muscle, heart, and liver of ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris). GLUTs examined were detected in nearly all tissues tested. Hepatic GLUT1 was minimally present in whole-tissue and absent in PM fractions. GLUT5 was expressed in flight-muscles at levels comparable to that of their liver, consistent with hummingbird flight-muscles' hypothesised uniquely high fructose-uptake and oxidation capacity. To assess GLUT regulation, we fed ruby-throated hummingbirds 1M sucrose ad libitum for 24 hours followed by either 1 hour of fasting or continued feeding until sampling. We measured relative GLUT abundance and concentrations of circulating sugars. Blood fructose concentration in fasted hummingbirds declined (∼5 mM to ∼0.18 mM), while fructose-transporting GLUT2 and GLUT5 abundance did not change in PM fractions. Blood glucose concentrations remained elevated in fed and fasted hummingbirds (∼30 mM), while glucose-transporting GLUT1 and GLUT3 in flight muscle and liver PM fractions, respectively, declined in fasted birds. Our results suggest that glucose uptake capacity is dynamically reduced in response to fasting, allowing for maintenance of elevated blood glucose levels, while fructose uptake capacity remains constitutively elevated promoting depletion of blood total fructose within the first hour of a fast.

Estimating on the fly: the approximate number system in rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus)

<p></p><p>When presented with resources that differ in quantity, many animals use a numerosity system to discriminate between them. One taxonomically widespread system is the approximate number system. This is a numerosity system that allows the rapid evaluation of the number of objects in a group and which is regulated by Weber's Law. Here we investigated whether wild, free-living rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus) possess an approximate number system. The hummingbirds were presented with two experiments. In the first we investigated whether hummingbirds spontaneously chose an array containing more flowers than an alternate array. In the second we asked whether the hummingbirds could learn to use numerosity as a cue to which of two arrays contained the better reward. The birds did not spontaneously prefer an array containing more flowers. After minimal training, however, they learned to choose the more numerous array and could differentiate between arrays of five and seven flowers. These data support the presence of an approximate number system in the rufous hummingbird. It seems plausible that having such a system would enable much more efficient foraging in this species.</p><p></p>
