Global-scale modeling of early factors and country-specific trajectories of COVID-19 incidence: a cross-sectional study of the first 6 months of the pandemic

<p><span>Studies examining factors responsible for COVID-19 incidence </span><span>are</span><span> mostly focused at the national or sub-national level. A global-level characterization of contributing factors and temporal trajectories of disease incidence is lacking. Here we conducted a global-scale analysis of COVID-19 infections to identify key factors associated with early disease incidence. Additionally, we compared longitudinal trends of COVID-19 incidence at a per-country level and classified countries based on COVID-19 incidence trajectories and effects of lockdown responses. </span><span>Univariate analysis identified</span> <span>eleven variables as independently associated with COVID-19 infections at a global level (p&lt;1e-05). Multivariable analysis identified a 4-variable model as optimal for explaining global variations in COVID-19 (p&lt;0.01). COVID-19 case trajectories for most countries were best captured by a log-logistic model, as determined by AIC estimates. Six predominant country clusters were identified when characterizing the effects of lockdown intervals on variations in COVID-19 new cases per country.</span> <span>Globally, economic and meteorological factors are important determinants of early COVID-19 incidence. Analysis of longitudinal trends and lockdown effects on COVID-19 highlights important nuances in country-specific responses to infections. These results </span><span>provide valuable insights into disease incidence at a per-country level, possibly allowing for more informed decision making by individual governments in future disease outbreaks.</span></p>

Incidence and influencing factors of occupational pneumoconiosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

<p><span><strong>Objectives</strong>: </span><span>To determine the incidence of pneumoconiosis worldwide and its influencing factors. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Design</strong>:</span><span> Systematic review and meta-analysis. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Setting</strong>:</span><span> Cohort studies on occupational pneumoconiosis.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Participants</strong>:</span><span> PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched until November 2021. Studies were selected for meta-analysis if they involved at least one variable investigated as an influencing factor for the incidence of pneumoconiosis and reported either the parameters and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the risk fit to the data, or sufficient information to allow for the calculation of those values. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Primary outcome measures</strong>:</span><span> The </span><span>pooled incidence of pneumoconiosis and risk ratio (RR) and 95% CIs of influencing factors. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>:</span><span> Our meta-analysis included 19 studies with a total of 335,424 participants, of whom 29,972 developed pneumoconiosis. The pooled incidence of pneumoconiosis was 0.093 (95% CI: 0.085~0.135). We identified the following influencing factors: (1) male (RR=3.74; 95%CI 1.31–10.64; P=0.01), (2) smoking (RR=1.80; 95%CI 1.34</span><span>–</span><span>2.43; P=0.0001), (3) tunneling category (RR=4.75; 95%CI 1.96</span><span>–</span><span>11.53; P&lt;0.0001), (4) helping category (RR=0.07; 95%CI 0.13</span><span>–</span><span>0.16; P&lt;0.0001), </span><span>(5) age (the highest incidence occurs between the ages of 50 and 60), </span><span>(6) duration of dust exposure ((RR=4.59, 95% CI 2.41</span><span>–</span><span>8.74, P&lt;0.01), (7) cumulative total dust exposure (CTD) (RR=34.14, 95% CI 17.50</span><span>–</span><span>66.63, P&lt;0.01). A dose-response analysis revealed a significant positive linear dose-response association between the risk of pneumoconiosis and duration of exposure and CTD (P-nonlinearity=0.10, P-nonlinearity=0.16; respectively). The Pearson correlation analysis revealed that silicosis incidence was highly correlated with CSE (r=0.794, P&lt;0.001).</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> The incidence of pneumoconiosis in occupational workers was 0.093 and seven factors were found to be associated with the incidence, providing some insight into the prevention of pneumoconiosis.</span></p> <p><span>PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022323233.</span></p> <p><span>Abbreviations:</span><span> NOS: Newcastle Ottawa Scale, CWP: Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis, CTD: cumulative total dust exposure, CSE: cumulative silica exposure.</span></p>

Understanding the incidence and timing of rabies cases in domestic animals and wildlife in south-east Tanzania in the presence of widespread domestic dog vaccination campaigns

<p>The "Zero by 30" strategic plan aims to eliminate human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030, and domestic dog vaccination is a vital component of this strategic plan. In areas where domestic dog vaccination has been implemented, it is important to assess the impact of this intervention. Additionally, understanding temporal and seasonal trends in the incidence of animal rabies cases may assist in optimizing such interventions. Data on the incidence of probable rabies cases in domestic and wild animals were collected between January 2011 and December 2018 in thirteen districts of south-east Tanzania where jackals comprise over 40% of reported rabies cases. Vaccination coverage was estimated over this period, as five domestic dog vaccination campaigns took place in all thirteen districts between 2011 and 2016. Negative binomial generalized linear models were used to explore the impact of domestic dog vaccination on the annual incidence of animal rabies cases, whilst generalized additive models were used to investigate the presence of temporal and/or seasonal trends. Increases in domestic dog vaccination coverage were significantly associated with a decreased incidence of rabies cases in both domestic dogs and jackals. A 35% increase in vaccination coverage was associated with a reduction in the incidence of probable dog rabies cases of between 78.0 and 85.5% (95% confidence intervals ranged from 61.2 to 92.2%) and a reduction in the incidence of probable jackal rabies cases of between 75.3 and 91.2% (95% confidence intervals ranged from 53.0 to 96.1%). A statistically significant common seasonality was identified in the monthly incidence of probable rabies cases in both domestic dogs and jackals with the highest incidence from February to August and lowest incidence from September to January. These results align with evidence supporting the use of domestic dog vaccination as part of control strategies aimed at reducing animal rabies cases in both domestic dogs and jackals in this region. The presence of a common seasonal trend requires further investigation but may have implications for the timing of future vaccination campaigns.</p>
