Rocky Mountain National Park bulk inorganic N deposition in close proximity to roads, summer 2021
Vehicles are an important source for N deposition that may negatively impact roadside ecosystems. While elevated roadside N deposition has been found in many locations, it is not yet known if vehicle emissions cause measurable increases of N deposition in complex, mountainous terrain adjacent to roads. To address this, this study investigated the effect of vehicle N emissions on throughfall (through trees) and open N deposition in a high traffic corridor in mountainous terrain of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. We measured bulk (wet + dry) atmospheric N deposition in throughfall and open samplers on transects of 750 (throughfall) and 225 (open) m moving away from the road using ion exchange resin (IER) collectors. This dataset contains inorganic nitrogen deposition data from this study.

Drylands are characterized by a pulse dynamics framework in which episodic rain events trigger brief pulses of biological activity and resource availability that regulate primary production in these ecosystems. Relatively small rain events can stimulate microbial processes like decomposition that release inorganic nitrogen needed by plant processes, which typically also depend on soil moisture received from larger rain events. Little is known how changes in rainfall patterns may affect plant available nitrogen in dryland soils, particularly across temporal scales. Therefore, we conducted a study to examine the daily and seasonal responses of plant available nitrogen to rain events that differed in size and frequency throughout a summer monsoon in a northern Chihuahuan Desert grassland located in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA. This data package, which accompanies an associated manuscript (Brown et al. 2022), contains measurements of inorganic nitrogen, nitrogen-acquiring microbial ecoenzymatic activities, and organic matter in soils collected from the Monsoon Rainfall Manipulation Experiment (MRME) during the 2014 summer growing season.

The effects of nitrogen and warming on inorganic nitrogen pool and production rates in arctic and boreal ecosystems: inorganic nitrogen transformation during a 3-month laboratory incubation
We incubated (2006) northern Alaskan soils (boreal and tundra) at two temperatures (5 degC and 15 degC) and two levels of nitrogen addition (with and without) to directly test for nitrogen limitation of inorganic nitrogen production rate and explore the interaction between temperature and nitrogen limitation. Over the 3-month laboratory incubation, we measured initial extratable inorganic nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen production rates from organic and mineral soils from four different ecosystem types (boreal burned, boreal unburned, moist acidic, moist non-acidic). To charactarize the soils, we also measured total C, total N, microbial biomass, isotopes values (delta 13, delta14), total free amino acid, and total soluble protein.
Measurements, from CCE LTER process cruises in the California Current region, of total dissolvable inorganic concentrations of the nutrient iron, 2017 - (ongoing).
Seawater profiles or discrete samples for total dissolvable iron (TDFe) analysis are collected with the trace metal rosette or GO-FLO bottles, respectively, in stations located within the CCE LTER region in the California Current System. The total dissolvable iron concentration is obtained by collecting unfiltered seawater samples in 250 mL LDPE bottles and storing them at pH 1.8 for 6 months or more. The acidified seawater sample is then filtered using acid cleaned 0.4 um PES membrane Titan 3 syringe filters and determined by flow injection chemiluminescent (FI-CL) analysis at Scripps Insitution of Oceanography since 2017 (ongoing).
McMurdo Dry Valleys Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen Concentrations in Lakes
The McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project monitors patterns of inorganic material transport in perennial ice-capped lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.

These data describe measures of excretion from talitrid amphipods (Megalorchestia corniculata) fed giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) blades and incubated in a series of mesocosms during May 2018. Data are contained in one table: time series of mesocosm porewater nutrient concentrations measured twice daily for approximately one week (two full trials included in this dataset). Organic and Inorganic Nutrients in the North Pacific from the 2017 cruise MGL1704 (Gradients 2)
<p>Data on organic and inorganic nutrients in unfiltered seawater that was sampled aboard the Gradients 2 cruise (MGL1704) in 2017 along a transect from Hawaii to 42 degrees north along a longitude of 158 degrees west. Seawater was collected into HDPE or polypropylene bottles and immediately frozen. Silicate, phosphate and nitrate+nitrite are determined colormetrically on a SEAL Analytical Autoanalyzer (AA3 with HR detectors), with the exception of nitrate+nitrite that is <0.5umol/L, which is analyzed by chemiluminescence. Total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) are determined by analysis of phosphate and nitrate, respectively, after oxidation by high-intensity ultraviolet light. Total organic phosphorus and total organic nitrogen are determined by subtracting background PO4 and NO3+NO2 from TP and TN, respectively. Total organic carbon is determined by combustion on a Shimadzu TOC-V analyzer.</p>
Anacostia Watershed Study: Base Cations, Inorganic Carbon, and Water Quality

Both sampling sites for these two streams are located on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. Please see Kaushal 2019 for further site descriptions. T densities -- defined as: metals per unit volume (nm-3) -- are calculated using the re-scaled structures.</p>

Regime shift in secondary inorganic aerosol formation and nitrogen deposition in the rural US
<p>Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) play an important role in air pollution and climate change, and their formation modulates atmospheric deposition of reactive nitrogen (N<sub>r</sub>; including oxidized and reduced nitrogen), impacting the nitrogen cycle. Large-scale and long-term analyses of SIA formation based on model simulations have significant uncertainties. Here, we improve constraints on SIA formation using decade-long in-situ observations of aerosol composition and gaseous precursors from multiple monitoring networks across the US. We reveal a shift in the formation regime of SIA in the rural US between 2011 – 2020, making rural areas less sensitive to changes in ammonia (NH<sub>3</sub>) concentrations and shortening the effective atmospheric lifetime of reduced forms of N<sub>r</sub>.<sub> </sub>This leads to potential increases in N<sub>r</sub> deposition near NH<sub>3</sub> emission hotspots, with ecosystem impacts warranting further investigation. NH<sub>3</sub>, a critical but not directly regulated precursor of fine particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) in the US, has been increasingly scrutinized to decrease PM<sub>2.5</sub>. Our findings, however, show controlling NH<sub>3</sub> became significantly less effective for mitigating PM<sub>2.5</sub> in the rural US. We highlight the need for more collocated aerosol and precursor observations for better characterization of SIA formation in urban areas and regions increasingly impacted by wildfires and dust.</p>
