Mercury particle precipitation using full-PIC global simulations

<p>Datasets and scripts&nbsp;concerning particle&nbsp;precipitation on the surface of Mercury derived from two&nbsp;implicit full-PIC simulations. We use the code iPIC3D to simulate the interaction between the solar-wind and the planet&#39;s magnetic environment. In this file we include (i) the 3D magnetic field data at steadystate,&nbsp;(ii) the particle precipitating on the planets at different times and (iii) the cross-sections of electron induced X-ray fluorescence emission between precipitating electrons and surface ions. Further details on the simulations can be found in:&nbsp;arXiv:2209.08517</p> <p>To clarify the usage of such different datasets, we include two modules to process the data in python (directory <em>src</em>) and few tests showing the capabilities of these modules (directory <em>test</em>). Images created from such tests can be found in the directory <em>images</em>.</p>

Mercury isotope clocks predict coastal residency and migration timing of hammerhead sharks

<p>1. The management of migratory taxa relies on the knowledge of their movements. Among them, ontogenetic habitat shift, from nurseries to adult habitats, is a behavioral trait shared across marine taxa allowing resource partitioning between life stages and reducing predation risk. As this movement is consistent over time, characterizing its timing is critical to implement efficient management plans, notably in coastal areas to mitigate the impact of fisheries on juvenile stocks.</p> <p>2. In the Mexican Pacific, habitat use of the smooth hammerhead shark (<em>Sphyrna zygaena</em>) is poorly described, while the species is heavily harvested. Given the large uncertainties associated with the timing of out-migration from coastal nursery grounds to offshore waters prior to reproductive maturity, a more precise assessment of smooth hammerhead shark movements is needed. </p> <p>3. Photochemical degradation of mercury imparts mass-independent isotope fractionation (Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg) which can be used to discriminate between neonate coastal shallow habitats and the offshore deep foraging patterns of late juveniles. Here, we present the application of muscle Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg as molecular clocks to predict the timing of ontogenetic habitat shifts by smooth hammerhead sharks, based on their isotopic compositions at the initial and arrival habitats and on muscle isotopic turnover rate.</p> <p>4. We observed decreases in Δ<sup>199</sup>Hg values with shark body length, reflecting increasing reliance on offshore mesopelagic prey with age. Coastal residency estimates indicated that smooth hammerhead sharks utilize coastal resources for two years prior to offshore migration, suggesting a prolonged residency in these ecosystems.</p> <p>Policy implications: This study demonstrates how mercury stable isotopes and isotopic clocks can be implemented as a complementary tool for stock management by predicting the timing of animal migration—a key aspect in the conservation of marine taxa. In the Mexican Pacific, fishing pressure on shark species occurs in coastal habitats depleting juvenile stocks. Consequently, management decision support tools are imperative for effectively maintaining early life stage population levels over time. The finding that smooth hammerhead sharks extensively rely on highly fished habitats for two years after parturition supports the relevance of establishing a size limit in coastal fisheries and demonstrates how the current temporal shark fishing closure could lack efficiency for the species.</p>

Data for: Low mercury concentration in a Greenland glacial fjord attributed to oceanic sources

<p>Total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations measured in southeast Greenland between 10 August and 20 August 2021. The majority of samples were collected in Sermilik Fjord and&nbsp;on the continental shelf to the west of the fjord mouth&nbsp; (identified by CTD cast number; see below for corresponding data citation).&nbsp;A small number of samples were collected by hand from surface waters&nbsp;in Apuseeq Fjord, in a lake and river near the village of Tiilerilaaq (formerly known as Tiniteqilaq), and in a river near Tasiilaq. All samples are identified by the date, time, and lat/lon of collection.</p> <p>For further details about the sample collection and analysis, please see the methods section of the associated publication.</p> <p>Sermilik Fjord and continental shelf&nbsp;CTD data are available via the NSF Arctic Data Center (doi:10.18739/A2HD7NT9K).</p>

<p>This study represents the first evidence of mercury contamination in the family Scarabaeidae, with a close focus to <em>Coprophanaeus lancifer</em>, the largest copro-necrophagous beetle in South America. This work shows the repartition of total mercury (THg) in the insect body and lays the groundwork for additional future studies.</p>

Mercury abundance and isotopic composition in granitic rocks: Implications for Hg cycling in the upper continental crust

<p>Mercury (Hg) is a highly volatile metal exhibiting both isotope mass-dependent (MDF, defined as &delta;<sup>202</sup>Hg) and mass-independent (MIF, expressed as &Delta;<sup>199</sup>Hg) fractionation. Assessing the Hg isotopic composition of the upper continental crust is crucial for the use of this new geochemical tool for petrogenetic tracing, particularly for understanding crust-mantle interaction. Here, we report Hg isotopic compositions of granitic rocks with distinct source affinity (I-, A-, and S-type) and of metasedimentary enclaves from the South China Craton. The results of more than 100 rock samples show large &delta;<sup>202</sup>Hg variations of -2.03 to 0.47 &permil; and relatively small &Delta;<sup>199</sup>Hg variations of -0.16 to 0.09 &permil;. The S-type granites studied here exhibit higher &delta;<sup>202</sup>Hg values (-0.58 to 0.00 &permil;; n=57) than their sedimentary protoliths (metasedimentary enclaves; -2.03 to -0.91 &permil;; n=7), suggesting significant Hg-MDF during magmatic processes. The &Delta;<sup>199</sup>Hg values of S-type granites (-0.08 to 0.09 &permil;) are indistinguishable from their sedimentary protoliths (-0.16 to 0.02 &permil;), suggestive of the absence of Hg-MIF during crustal anatexis and subsequent magmatic differentiation. The I- and A-type granites studied have smaller &Delta;<sup>199</sup>Hg variations of -0.11 to 0.04 &permil; (n=28) and -0.07 to 0.04 &permil; (n=15), respectively, but are within the range of the S-type granites. The compositional range of all granite variants may be explained by the variable intensity of large-scale MASH (melting-assimilation-storage-homogenization) processes. Our new data combined with previously published data of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks allow us to estimate that the upper continental crust (UCC) has a Hg abundance of 13.5 ppb and a weighted average &delta;<sup>202</sup>Hg of -1.15 &plusmn; 1.01 &permil; (2SD), which are higher than the corresponding value of the primitive mantle, indicating the enrichment of Hg and &delta;<sup>202</sup>Hg in the UCC. However, the weighted average &Delta;<sup>199</sup>Hg value of the UCC (0.03 &plusmn; 0.15 &permil;; 2SD) is undistinguished from the primitive mantle, suggesting no obvious Hg-MIF during the formation and differentiation of the continental crust.</p>
