Composite 2D video of raw and processed video footage from an outdoor camerawork training session for qualitative data collection

<p>The video clip, in traditional 2D format, contains a short excerpt (1:43 minutes) from an&nbsp;outdoor camerawork training session. The raw and processed footage from the different cameras is composited in a single frame. The original composite file has 32 channels of audio so that one can switch between different microphones and combinations of microphones. This is indicated in the video clip but is not available in this file. All participants are playing particular roles in the training session, and each carries a camera. In preparation for the real data collection with a guide, one person is pretending to be a nature guide. She carries a GoPro camera on a gimbal. There is an instructor, who is carrying a single lens 360&deg; camera on a raised extension pole with a separate ambisonic microphone. Two others are filming with a prosumer camcorder and a single lens 360&deg; camera on a lowered extension pole respectively. And a fifth person is filming with a stereoscopic 360&deg; camera and an independent ambisonic microphone on a monopod. In a nutshell, this is a typical team filming arrangement, in which the team needs to attentively yet silently coordinate their joint camerawork. Languages: Danish and English</p>

Outdoor activity participation improves adolescents' mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping human interactions with the natural environment, generating profound consequences for health and well-being. To assess the effects of COVID-19 on the outdoor recreation participation and well-being of adolescents we conducted a nationally representative survey of youth ages 10-18 across the United States (n = 624) using a Qualtrics XM panel between April 30 and June 15, 2020. Survey questions focused on frequency of participation in several types of outdoor activities before and during the pandemic. Activity categories included outdoor play activities (e.g., running, biking), nature-based activities (e.g., camping, fishing), and spending outdoor time with family. We assessed changes in the psychological health of youth using a four-item subjective well-being scale validated by the World Health Organization. Paired t-tests revealed significant decreases in both outdoor recreation participation (64% of youth reported declines) and subjective well-being (52% reported declines) during the pandemic. A regression model examining correlates of changes in subjective well-being (<i>R<sup>2</sup></i>=0.42) revealed strong associations between subjective well-being and changes in outdoor play activities (<i>B</i>=0.44, <i>p</i>&lt;0.001) and changes in nature-based activities (<i>B</i>=0.21, <i>p</i>=0.016). Youth who continued to participate in these activities during COVID-19 reported significantly smaller drops in subjective well-being, whereas youth whose outdoor participation waned were more negatively impacted by the pandemic. Furthermore, youth who reported high levels of outdoor play activity participation before the pandemic were also less likely to experience post-COVID-19 declines in subjective well-being. These results contribute to our understanding of adolescent psychological reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as highlighting the critical role that time outdoors and time in nature can play in bolstering youth resilience to environmental stressors.</p>

Data from: The role of human outdoor recreation in shaping patterns of grizzly bear-black bear co-occurrence

Species distributions are influenced by a combination of landscape variables and biotic interactions with other species, including people. Grizzly bears and black bears are sympatric, competing omnivores that also share habitats with human recreationists. By adapting models for multi-species occupancy analysis, we analyzed trail camera data from 192 trail camera locations in and around Jasper National Park, Canada to estimate grizzly bear and black bear occurrence and intensity of trail use. We documented (a) occurrence of grizzly bears and black bears relative to habitat variables (b) occurrence and intensity of use relative to competing bear species and motorised and non-motorised recreational activity, and (c) temporal overlap in activity patterns among the two bear species and recreationists. Grizzly bears were spatially separated from black bears, selecting higher elevations and locations farther from roads. Both species co-occurred with motorised and non-motorised recreation, however, grizzly bears reduced their intensity of use of sites with motorised recreation present. Black bears showed higher temporal activity overlap with recreational activity than grizzly bears, however differences in bear daily activity patterns between sites with and without motorised and non-motorised recreation were not significant. Reduced intensity of use by grizzly bears of sites where motorised recreation was present is a concern given off-road recreation is becoming increasingly popular in North America, and can negatively influence grizzly bear recovery by reducing foraging opportunities near or on trails. Camera traps and multi-species occurrence models offer non-invasive methods for identifying how habitat use by animals changes relative to sympatric species, including humans. These conclusions emphasise the need for integrated land-use planning, access management, and grizzly bear conservation efforts to consider the implications of continued access for motorised recreation in areas occupied by grizzly bears.

A global investigation of outdoor climate comfort

<p><span>In the era of climate crisis, the search for places with natural climate comfort becomes a crucial element in understanding the interaction between the environment and global quality of life. The search for climatic comfort in the environment, influencing human well-being and productivity, can be satisfied by indoor artificial climate control; however, this generates environmental impacts and an artificialization of human life experience. This study explores how climatic comfort varies across the world, specifically in open (outdoor) environments. A global survey was developed and modelled together with spatial climate databases to assess outdoor climatic comfort regarding temperature, air humidity, and natural lighting. The most comfortable places are in tropical/equatorial regions in high altitude. The results are discussed in the face of the current spatial distribution of population in the world, and the past, current, and future scenarios of demographic dynamics, showing a critical situation for countries in African Sahel and Middle Orient deserts.</span></p>
