Signs of life detection behind obstacles using an UWB radar sensor

<p>The &quot;Signs of life detection behind obstacles using an UWB radar sensor&quot; dataset was created by University of West Attica, by collecting data from 9 people using an UWB sensor, which was the X4M200 UWB radar sensor by Novelda, with and without the existence of a wall between the subject and the radar for the purposes of RESCUER project (https://rescuerproject.eu/ - a Horizon 2020 Research &amp; Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No.101021836). In all cases, the subject was lying down in the same stance for about 1 min and the radar was placed in four different positions: a) 0.2 m from the ground, b) 0.5 m from the ground, c) 1 m from the ground, d) 1 m from the ground and with a 45 degree angle. For comparison purposes, we also include in the dataset the case where no human is present within the radar&#39;s detection area. The subjects were placed in a distance between 0.5 and 5 metres from the radar and different stances were considered, while data were collected both for the amplitude (designated as abs) and the phase of the signal (designated as angle). This information is designated in each filename. For example, the filename &quot;2 facing radar abs.csv&quot;, indicates that the subject is placed in 2 metres away from the radar, he/she is facing the radar and the file contains the signal&#39;s amplitude. The sampling rate of the radar was set to 17 samples per second and a distance step of about 0.05144 m was also considered.</p>

Postural fall in systolic blood pressure is an useful warning sign in Dengue fever

<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: Capillary leak is the hallmark of development of severe dengue. A rise in hematocrit has been a major warning sign in WHO guidelines. Postural hypotension, which could reflect the intravascular volume reduction in capillary leak, has been noted as a warning sign in CDC and Pan American Health Organisation guidelines. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of Postural hypotension as a marker of development of severe dengue.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: 150 patients admitted with dengue fever were recruited in this prospective observational study. Diagnostic accuracy of conventional warning signs (<span>abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fluid accumulation, mucosal bleeding, lethargy, liver enlargement, increasing hematocrit with decreasing platelets)</span> and postural hypotension was evaluated.</p> <p><strong>Result</strong>: 23 (15.3%) subjects developed severe dengue. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that Ascites/Pleural effusion and postural fall in systolic blood pressure of &gt;10.33% had an odds ratio of 5.024(95%CI:1.11 – 22.75) and 11.369 (95% CI:2.27 – 56.87) respectively. Other parameters did not reach statistical significance. Sensitivity and specificity of Ascites/Pleural effusion were 82.6% and 88.2% for development of severe dengue, whereas postural fall in systolic blood pressure had sensitivity and specificity of 87% and 82.7%.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: These findings present a strong case for including postural hypotension as a warning sign in patients with dengue fever, especially in resource-limited settings.</p>

Data from: Integrating multiple sign types to improve occupancy estimation for inconspicuous species

<p><span class="Dummy">Standard occupancy models</span><span class="Dummy"> enable unbiased estimation of occupancy by accounting for observation errors such as missed detections (false negatives) and, less commonly, incorrect detections (false positives). Occupancy models are fitted to data from repeated site visits in which surveyors record evidence of species presence. Use of indirect sign (e.g., scat, tracks) as evidence of presence can vastly improve survey efficiency for inconspicuous species but can also introduce additional sources of error. We developed a "multi‐sign" occupancy approach to model the detection process separately for unique sign types and used this method to improve estimates of occupancy dynamics for an inconspicuous species, the American pika (</span><em><span class="fi">Ochotona princeps</span></em><span class="Dummy">). We investigated how estimates of pika occupancy and environmental drivers differed under four increasingly realistic representations of the observation process: (1) perfect detection (commonly assumed for modeling pika occupancy), (2) standard occupancy model (single observation process without possibility of false detection), (3) multi‐sign with no false detections (non‐false positive model), and (4) multi‐sign with false detections (full model). For the multi‐sign occupancy models, we modeled the detection of each sign type (fresh scat, fresh haypiles, pika calls, and pika sightings) separately as a function of climatic and environmental covariates. Estimates of occupancy processes and inferences about environmental drivers were sensitive to different detection models. Simplified representations of the detection processes generally resulted in higher occupancy estimates and higher turnover rates than the full multi‐sign model. Environmental drivers also varied in their influence on occupancy models, where (e.g.) forb cover was estimated to more strongly influence occupancy in the full multi‐sign model than the simpler models. As has been reported previously in other contexts, unmodeled heterogeneity in the observation process can lead to biases in occupancy processes and uncertainty in the relationships between occupancy and environmental covariates. Overall, our multi‐sign approach to dynamic occupancy modeling, which accounts for spatiotemporal variation in reliability among sign types, has strong potential to generate more realistic estimates of occupancy dynamics for inconspicuous species.</span></p>

Signs of grassroot activities

<p><strong><em>Signs of grassroot activities</em></strong><em> with respect to direct publishing, peer review services, and diamond journal initiatives at Dutch universities; results of a mini tour of university web sites and preprint statistics</em>.</p> <p>For <strong>direct publishing</strong>, a.k.a. preprint publishing, there seemed to be no readily available statistics on the internet. As <a href="https://www.dimensions.ai/">Dimensions</a> includes preprints, CWTS colleague Ludo Waltman could compile statistics on journal articles that were published as preprints first. The result is presented on page 2.</p> <p>For <strong>peer review services</strong> I consulted the web site of <a href="https://peercommunityin.org/">Peer Community In</a>, currently the most robust service in this domain with 1900 reviewers, covering 16 disciplines. I selected the reviewers from the Netherlands and made a breakdown by the Dutch universities. The result is presented on pages 3 and 4.</p> <p>For Dutch initiatives in <strong>diamond journals</strong> I consulted <a href="https://openjournals.nl/">Openjournals.nl</a> and generated the list shown on page 5.</p>

A Sign in Space - The Message

<p><a href="https://asignin.space/"><em>A Sign in Space</em></a>&nbsp;is an interdisciplinary&nbsp;project by media artist&nbsp;<a href="http://danieladepaulis.com/">Daniela de Paulis</a>, in collaboration with&nbsp;the SETI Institute, the European Space Agency, the Green Bank Observatory and&nbsp;INAF, the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.</p> <p>The project consists in transmitting a simulated extraterrestrial message as part of a live performance, using an ESA spacecraft as celestial source. The objective of the project is to involve the world-wide Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence community, professionals from different fields and the&nbsp;broader&nbsp;public, in the reception, decoding and interpretation of the message. This process will require global cooperation, bridging a conversation around the topics of SETI, space research and society, across multiple&nbsp;cultures&nbsp;and fields of expertise.</p> <p>On May 24, 2023, during the&nbsp;<a href="https://asignin.space/launch-event/">SETI Live: A Sign in Space - Simulating First Contact</a>, the European Space Agency&#39;s&nbsp;ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter&nbsp;(TGO) in orbit around Mars transmitted an encoded message to Earth to simulate receiving a signal from extraterrestrial intelligence.</p>

GSLW - Greek Sign Language in the Wild Dataset

<p>GSLW: The dataset has been recorded under various background and lighting variations and with different smartphones. The camera position and orientation are gently varied among subsequent recordings to increase video diversity. <strong>15 cases</strong> of hearing-impaired people dealing with public services have been recorded. Building Envelopes in New York's CBD: Normalized Signed Distance Function Representation

Pesäpallo Ball Signed by Marshal Mannerheim

This leather ball was used in the 15th annual all-star game between East and West Finland, played in Jyväskylä on 11 September 1949. The Finnish Pesäpallo Association decided to use a ball that had been autographed by Marshal Carl Gustaf Mannerheim, Finland's wartime leader and retired former President. Mile 0 Sign - Object Capture

Modeled using Apple's Object Capture Description from [Atlas Obscura](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/mile-zero): &gt; LOCATED IN PICTURESQUE BEACON HILL Park in British Columbia's capital, Mile 0 is one of the symbolic starting points of the Trans-Canada Highway on the Pacific Coast. The highway, conceived in the late 1940s and constructed between 1950 and 1971, was the longest uninterrupted highway in the world at the time of its completion. Spanning a whopping 4,860 miles (7,821 kilometers), it runs across all 10 of Canada's provinces, crossing the likes of the Rocky Mountains and the wide-open prairies of central Canada. There is no officially recognized starting point or "mile zero," St. John's, Newfoundland, also has a "mile zero" of their own, being the Atlantic end of the route. Located nearby is a statue of runner Terry Fox, who attempted to run the length of Trans-Canada Highway to raise money for cancer research, before succumbing to the disease himself at around the midpoint of his trek.
