Reduced biodiversity in modernised villages: a conflict between sustainable development goals

1. Despite large conservation efforts to halt the loss of farmland biodiversity in Europe, negative population trends are still observed, especially for common species. Old villages and human settlements are biodiversity hotspots and important breeding habitats for farmland birds, but recent requirements for energy saving measures and improved living comfort have changed their architecture and habitats. Consequently, modernisation of villages may negatively affect bird diversity due to the loss of nesting and foraging sites.

2. We investigated how the abundance and diversity of birds breeding in 104 Polish villages varied in relation to the degree of modernisation as estimated by the proportion of new and renovated homesteads.

3. Abundance of building-nesting species, but not tree-nesting species, declined by 50% across a gradient of old to highly modernised villages. The contribution of new vs. renovated houses to the observed decline was similar.

4. Applications and synthesis. Rural modernisation has a dramatic effect on abundance of birds nesting in/on buildings, thus may be an important and overlooked contributor to farmland bird population declines in Europe. Villages and rural properties may fall outside of current conservation policy as they are neither protected areas nor agricultural lands (where AES can be applied). Therefore, bird diversity declines in rural landscapes could continue unchecked. The observed conflict between sustainability goals such as increased building energy efficiency and biodiversity conservation suggests that sustainable rural development should better link modernisation with conservation measures, e.g. by constructing nesting sites when renovating and building new houses.

Development of public dynamic spatio-temporal monitoring and analysis tool of supply chain vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability

Supply chains play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and societal well-being, facilitating the efficient movement of goods from producers to consumers. However, the increasing frequency of disruptions caused by geopolitical events, pandemics, natural disasters, and shifts in commerce poses significant challenges to supply chain resilience. This draft update report discusses the development of a dynamic spatio-temporal monitoring and analysis tool to assess supply chain vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability. Leveraging news data, macroeconomic metrics, inbound cargo data (for sectors in California), and operational conditions of California's highways, the tool employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and empirical regression analyses to identify emerging trends and extract valuable information about disruptions to inform decision-making. Key features of the tool include sentiment analysis of news articles, topic classification, visualization of geographic locations, and tracking of macroeconomic indicators. By integrating diverse and dynamic data sources (e.g., news articles) and using empirical and analytical techniques, the tool offers a comprehensive framework to enhance our understanding of supply chain vulnerabilities and resilience, ultimately contributing to more effective strategies for decision-making in supply chain management. The dynamic nature of this tool enables continuous monitoring and adaptation to evolving conditions, thereby enhancing the analysis of resilience and sustainability in global supply chains.

Data from: Climate impacts on the ocean are making the Sustainable Development Goals a moving target traveling away from us

1. Climate change is impacting marine ecosystems and their goods and services in diverse ways, which can directly hinder our ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, set out under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 2. Through expert elicitation and a literature review, we find that most climate change effects have a wide variety of negative consequences across marine ecosystem services, though most studies have highlighted impacts from warming and consequences to marine species. 3. Climate change is expected to negatively influence marine ecosystem services through global stressors – such as ocean warming and acidification – but also by amplifying local and regional stressors such as freshwater runoff and pollution load. 4. Experts indicated that all Sustainable Development Goals would be overwhelmingly negatively affected by these climate impacts to marine ecosystem services, with eliminating hunger being among the most directly negatively affected Sustainable Development Goal. 5. Despite these challenges, the Sustainable Development Goals aiming to transform our consumption and production practices and develop clean energy systems are found to be least affected by marine climate impacts. These findings represent a strategic point of entry for countries to achieve sustainable development, given that these two goals are relatively robust to climate impacts and that they are important pre-requisite for other Sustainable Development Goals. 6. Our results suggest that climate change impacts on marine ecosystems are set to make the Sustainable Development Goals a moving target traveling away from us. Effective and urgent action towards sustainable development, including mitigating and adapting to climate impacts on marine systems are important to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, but the longer this action stalls the more distant these goals will become.

A pragmatic randomized maternal education trial in rural Uganda - Eight years of sustained improvement in child development

Background

Nutrition and stimulation interventions may promote early childhood development, but little is known about the long-term benefits of such interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We now conducted a follow-up study on a cluster-randomized maternal education trial that was conducted when their children were 6–8 months old, to assess the sustainability of the developmental benefits eight years after the intervention.

Methods and findings

The intervention consisted of education in nutrition, hygiene, oral sanitation and child stimulation. In the current study, we assessed child processing and cognitive abilities using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children Second Edition (KABC-II) and attention and inhibitory control using the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA). Using Stata version 17.0, t-tests and multi-level regression were employed to compare scores from KABC-II and TOVA tests in the two study groups adjusting for clustering effect. The data were analyzed by intention-to-treat. The original trial included 511 mother-child pairs (intervention n=263, control n=248), whereas in the current study, 361 (71%; intervention n=185, control n=176) pairs were available for analyses. The intervention group scored higher than the controls (all P-values<0.001) on all five KABC-II sub-scales, as well as on the KABC-II global score (mean difference: 14, 95% CI: 12–16; P<0.001). Furthermore, for all five TOVA variables, the intervention group scored higher than the controls in both the visual and auditory tasks (all P-values <0.05). The main limitation is that we were unable to determine the exact individual contribution of each component (nutrition, hygiene and stimulation) of the intervention to the developmental benefits since they were all delivered as a combined package.

Conclusions

The intervention group consistently scored markedly higher on both psychometric tests. Thus, even eight years after the original maternal education intervention, the developmental benefits that we observed at child age of one, two and three years, were sustained.
