Data from: Large herbivores trigger spatiotemporal changes in forest plant diversity

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Large herbivores can exert top-down control on terrestrial plant communities, but the magnitude, direction, and scale-dependency of their impacts remain equivocal, especially in temperate and boreal forests, where multiple disturbances often interact. Using a unique, long-term and replicated landscape experiment, we assessed the influence of a high density of white-tailed deer (</span><em><span>Odocoileus virginianus</span></em><span>) on the spatiotemporal dynamics of diversity, composition, and successional trajectories of understorey plant assemblages in recently logged boreal forests. This experiment provided a rare opportunity to test </span><span>whether deer herbivory represents a direct filter on plant communities or if it mainly acts to suppress dominant plants which, in turn, release other plant species from strong negative plant-plant interactions. These two hypotheses make different predictions about changes in community composition, alpha and beta diversity in different</span><span> vegetation layers and at different spatial scales. Our results showed that deer had strong effects on plant community composition and successional trajectories, but the resulting impacts on plant alpha and beta diversity patterns were markedly scale-dependent in both time and space. Responses of tree and non-tree vegetation layers were strongly asymmetric. Deer acted both as a direct filter and as a suppressor of dominant plant species during early forest succession, but the magnitude of both processes was specific to tree and non-tree vegetation layers. Although our data supported the </span><span>ungulate-driven </span><span>homogenization hypothesis, </span><span>compositional shifts and changes of alpha diversity were poor predictors of beta diversity loss.</span><span> Our findings underscore the importance of long-term studies in revealing non-linear temporal community trends, and they challenge managers to prioritize particular community properties and scales of interest, given contrasting trends of composition, alpha, and beta diversity across spatial scales.</span></p>

A gas-only bioreactor system maintains stable culture environments and reveals that moderate pH deviations trigger transcriptome-wide responses in human cells cultured in physioxia and physiological buffers

<p><span>Although pH instability is emerging as a potential driver of changes in cell physiology, pH is still poorly controlled during cell culture and in vitro experiments. Standard procedures include the use of chemicals usually not present in the primary physiological buffering system (CO<sub>2</sub>/HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>), such as acids and bases, to manipulate pH levels. This, however, leads to artifacts that potentially affect scientists' findings. </span><span>Here, we propose a novel method for controlling pH levels by relying only on the physiological buffering system. pH was manipulated in a repurposed commercial bioreactor set-up, using a two-sided control loop of CO<sub>2</sub> and N<sub>2</sub> gas in NaHCO<sub>3</sub>--buffered medium. This method produces optimal and stable dO<sub>2</sub> </span><span>profiles and tightly maintains pH levels. With this procedure, we analyzed the effects of different pH levels (6.8, 7.0, 7.2, and 7.4) on the performance and transcriptome of the human GM12878 cell line over a 72-hours experiment. Our results showed that inflammation and negative cellular proliferation are among the signatures activated at low pH. This further highlights the importance of a thorough pH control during cell culture. </span></p>

Flooding triggers increased surface activity in a bottom-dwelling turtle

<p>Mexican giant musk turtles (<em>Staurotypus triporcatus</em>) are large, bottom-dwelling turtles in Central America. Following a flooding event, they were frequently seen at the surface, wherease they were never seen prior to the flooding. The data were collected using a motorized canoe to search for turtles at the surface. When possible, notes were made about size. In some cases, it was possible to capture the turtles and measure them. Observations of times, dates, sexes, and sizes of turtles are presented, as well as a measure of search effort (times of day searched and distance of creek searched). Missing values are reported as NA.</p>

Cooperative circumnavigation with event-triggered bearing measurements

<p>This demonstration shows a team of Aerial Robotic Workers (ARW)s performing a circumnavigation mission. The ARWs circumnavigate a virtual target whose position is progressively estimated by means of event-triggered bearing measurements.</p> <p>The control objective is that the ARWs circumnavigate the target at a desired speed, while forming a regular polygon around the target.</p> <p>Each ARW maintains a running estimation of the position of the target, which is updated every time a new bearing measurement is taken. New bearing measurements are triggered with a recursive law that guarantees that the estimated position converges to the real position of the virtual target.</p> <p>Each ARW intermittently monitors the relative position of the ARW that precedes it in the circumnavigation, and adjusts its circumnavigation speed according to such relative position. This control logic allows the ARW to converge to a regular polygon around the target.</p> <p>The control algorithm is implemented on a ROS architecture where the controller of each ARW corresponds to a different ROS node.</p>
