Psychological interventions for depression among informal caregivers of older adult populations: protocol of a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Increased life expectancy has led to an increased demand for family members to provide informal care for their older relatives in the home. Many studies suggest informal caregivers are at greater risk of experiencing symptoms of depression. However, there is a lack of research examining the effectiveness of psychological interventions targeting these symptoms alongside clinical and methodological moderators potentially associated with intervention effectiveness. This review aims to address this gap and will inform the development of a psychological intervention targeting depression among adult-child caregivers of older parents, given many studies show that among informal caregivers of older adults, adult children experience specific difficulties and needs for psychological support. Further, the lack of studies targeting adult children specifically necessitates conducting this review targeting caregivers of older adults in general.</p> <p><strong>Methods and analysis:</strong>&nbsp;Randomised controlled trials of psychological interventions targeting symptoms of depression among informal caregivers will be identified via a systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Excerpta Medica DataBase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and Web of Science) and supplemented by handsearching of previous systematic reviews, reference and forward citation checking, and expert contact. If possible, a meta-analysis will be conducted to examine the: (1) effectiveness of psychological interventions for depression among informal caregivers of older adults, (2) effectiveness of psychological interventions for secondary outcomes such as anxiety, stress, caregiver burden, psychological distress, quality of life, well-being and self-efficacy and (3) moderating effects of clinical and methodological factors on effectiveness.&nbsp;</p>

Personality in chronic headaches: A systematic review with meta-analysis

<p>Dataset refers to a systematic review on the personality traits associated to Chronic Headache (CH) compared to healthy controls and to a quantitative meta-analysis with the studies using the same instrument to assess personality traits. Thirteen studies were included in the systematic review but only three studies were deeply explored in a meta-analysis since the only ones using a common instrument to assess personality dimensions. According to the results of the meta-analysis, different subtypes of CH patients scored higher than healthy controls on Hypochondriasis and Hysteria scales highlighting that these personality traits are common across CH categories. The systematic review showed higher levels of depressive and anxious personality dimensions and pain catastrophizing in CH compared to healthy controls. Moreover, frequent-chronic forms and Medication Overuse Headache were the most symptomatic and frail categories showing higher levels of dysfunctional personality traits and psychopathological symptoms</p>

A meta-analysis of the characterisations of plastic ingested by fish globally

<p>Plastic contamination in the environment is common but the characterisation of plastic ingested by fishes in different environment is lacking. Hence, a meta-analysis was conducted to identify the prevalence of plastic ingested by fish globally. Based on the qualitative analysis of plastic size, small microplastic (&lt;1 mm) was predominantly ingested by fish globally. Besides, our meta-analysis revealed that plastic fibres (70.6%) and fragments (19.3%) were the most prevalent plastic components ingested by fish, while blue (24.2%) and black (18.0%) coloured plastic were the most abundant. Polyethylene (15.7%) and polyester (11.6%) were the most abundant polymers. Mixed-effect models were employed to identify the effects of the moderators (sampling environment, plastic size, digestive organs examined, and sampling continents) on the prevalence of plastic shape, colour, and polymer type. Among the moderators, only the sampling environment and continent contributed to a significant difference between subgroups in plastic shape and polymer type. The result suggested that most of the fish species ingested plastic unintentionally due to its prevalence in the environment.</p>

The effect of various orthodontic treatments on facial attractiveness. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Background:&nbsp;</strong>Facial and smile attractiveness are significant motivating factor for patients to seek orthodontic treatment. Although there is a general belief that orthodontic treatment improves facial appearance, this has yet not been systematically evaluated.</p> <p><strong>Objectives:</strong>&nbsp;To assess the current evidence on the effect of orthodontic treatment on facial attractiveness.</p> <p><strong>Search Methods:</strong>&nbsp;Systematic and unrestricted search of nine databases were performed up to January 2022.</p> <p><strong>Selection Criteria:&nbsp;</strong>Studies evaluating facial attractiveness before and after orthodontic treatment.</p> <p><strong>Data Collection and Analysis:&nbsp;</strong>Extracted data included study design and setting, sample size and demographics, malocclusion type, treatment modality and method for outcome assessment. Risk of bias was assessed with the ROBINS-I tool for non-randomised studies and with RoB-2 for randomized controlled trials. Random-effects meta-analyses of mean differences and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were performed.</p> <p><strong>Results:&nbsp;</strong>Twenty studies were included in data synthesis; three randomized controlled clinical trials and 17 non-randomized clinical studies of retrospective or prospective design. One of the randomized controlled trials was found to have low risk of bias, one presented some concerns and the third showed a high risk of bias. All non-randomized studies showed either unclear or high risk of bias.&nbsp;</p> <p>Data syntheses showed that orthodontic treatment improved facial attractiveness ratings by 9% when compared to untreated controls (MD: 9.05 / 95% CI:&nbsp;4.71; 13.39). A combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery also showed a positive effect of 5.5% (MD: 5.51 / 95% CI:&nbsp;1.55; 9.47)&nbsp;when compared to orthodontic treatment alone. There was no difference in effect between extraction and non-extraction treatments (MD: -0.89 / 95% CI: -8.72; 6.94) or between different types of Class II correctors (MD:2.21 / 95% CI:&nbsp;-16.51; 20.93).</p> <p><strong>Limitations:&nbsp;</strong>With the exception of 2 RCTs, included studies were of unclear or low quality.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong>&nbsp;Orthodontic treatment has a clinically weak effect on facial attractiveness when compared to no treatment. Which are the most frequently involved peripheral joints in calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition at imaging? A Systematic Literature Review and meta-analysis by the OMERACT Ultrasound – CPPD subgroup

<p><strong>Objectives</strong>: To identify the prevalence of calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition (CPPD) using ultrasound and conventional radiology at peripheral joints in patients with suspected or definite CPPD.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed and Embase using pre-defined search strategies from inception to April 2021 to identify studies that evaluated conventional radiology and ultrasound in detecting CPPD at peripheral joints, including definite or suspected CPPD [Research question 1 (RQ1) and Research Question 2 (RQ2), respectively]. For the meta-analysis, the first, second, and third sub-analysis included studies with the knee, and knee or wrist as the index joint for CPPD (without restrictions on the reference standard) and synovial fluid analysis or histology as a reference standard (without restrictions on the index joint), respectively.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>One-thousand eight hundred and twenty-seven manuscripts were identified, of which 94 articles were finally included. Twenty-two and seventy-two papers were included in RQ1 and RQ2, respectively. The knee had the highest prevalence for RQ1 and RQ2 by both conventional radiology and ultrasound, followed by the wrist with the highest prevalence for RQ1. The hand had the lowest CPPD prevalence. The third sub-analysis showed a higher CPPD prevalence on ultrasound than conventional radiology at the knee (only data available).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Among all peripheral joints, the knees and wrists could be regarded as the target joints for CPPD detection by imaging. Furthermore, ultrasound seems to detect a higher number of calcium pyrophosphate deposits than conventional radiology, even when using a more restrictive reference standard.</p>
