Data for: Causal mechanisms for negative impacts of energy development inform management triggers for sagebrush birds
<p>Estimated population trends can identify declining species to focus biological conservation, but monitoring may fail to illuminate causes of population change and strategies for reversing declines. Monitoring programs can relate trends with environmental attributes to test causal hypotheses, but typical analytical approaches do not explicitly support causal inference, diluting available data for informing conservation. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) extended Integrated Monitoring in Bird Conservation Regions with a quasi-experimental sampling design over a 10-year period (2010–2019) to evaluate impacts of oil and gas development on sagebrush birds within the Atlantic Rim Natural Gas Development Project in southern Wyoming. We analyzed resulting data using a multi-scale community occupancy model to estimate trends in species occupancy and richness relevant to management triggers. Additionally, we employed path analysis to evaluate mechanisms underlying observed trends to inform potential management responses. Fine-scale occupancy for sage thrasher (<em>Oreoscoptes montanus</em>) declined within the high-development stratum at a rate sufficient to meet an<em> a priori</em> management trigger established by the BLM. Two additional sagebrush-associated species, Brewer's (<em>Spizella breweri</em>) and sagebrush sparrow (<em>Artemisiospiza nevadensis</em>), exhibited negative development relationships with trend, as did overall species richness, and richness of grassland, sagebrush, and generalist guilds. We identified well pad density and invasive plants associated with energy development as causal factors contributing to these negative development impacts. We demonstrate an analytical approach for both estimating occupancy trends and identifying underlying causes to inform conservation action. Reducing the development footprint, including well pad density and associated invasive plants, could help reduce or limit impacts on birds within this landscape.</p>

HADES: An NFV solution for energy-efficient placement and resource allocation in heterogeneous infrastructures. Study dataset
<p>The publication and research associated with this dataset are currently under review in the Journal of Network and Computer Applications.</p> <p>In that research, we present HADES, an NFV solution for energy-efficient placement and resource allocation in heterogeneous infrastructures. HADES is an OSM (Open Source MANO) extension that allows the configuration of virtual network functions and their subsequent resource allocation and deployment at the edge, minimizing energy consumption and ensuring the quality of service.</p> <p>This dataset contains the following:</p> <ul> <li>1 CSV file with execution time results of the iTAREA module for (60) different problem sizes and (3) execution environments.</li> <li>1 CSV file with energy consumption results of HADES deployments and other 5 assignment policies: First-fit, Random-fit, Fastest-fit, Best-fit, and kube-scheduler (the Kubernetes’ assignment policy).</li> </ul> <p>This work is supported by the European Union's H2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement DAEMON 101017109 and by the projects co-financed by FEDER funds LEIA UMA18-FEDERJA-15 and IRIS PID2021-122812OB-I00 (MCI/AEI).</p>

Data for: Ambient and substrate energy influence decomposer diversity differentially across trophic levels
<p><span>The species-energy hypothesis predicts increasing biodiversity with increasing energy in ecosystems. Proxies for energy availability are often grouped into ambient energy (i.e., solar radiation) and substrate energy (i.e., non-structural carbohydrates or nutritional content). The relative importance of substrate energy is thought to decrease with increasing trophic level from primary consumers to predators, with reciprocal effects of ambient energy. Yet, empirical tests are lacking. We compiled data on 332,557 deadwood-inhabiting beetles of 901 species reared from wood of 49 tree species across Europe. Using host-phylogeny-controlled models, we show that the relative importance of substrate energy versus ambient energy decreases with increasing trophic levels: the diversity of zoophagous and mycetophagous beetles was determined by ambient energy, while non-structural carbohydrate content in woody tissues determined that of xylophagous beetles. Our study thus overall supports the species-energy hypothesis and specifies that the relative importance of ambient temperature increases with increasing trophic level with opposite effects for substrate energy.</span></p>

Measures of urban form and mobility energy use indices for each census tract in the United States
<p>This dataset contains data on urban form (the configuration of the built environment) for each census tract in the United States, encompassing density (destination access), land use diversity (entropy), road network properties, road network capacity relative to the surrounding population, and public transit access. Metrics are measured around the centroid of each census tract in multiple given radii. The data also contain other publicly available metrics for each census tract that may be helpful, such as each tract's associated city, zipcode, and county name, area and water area, and centroid coordinates. Certain measures resemble those available in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies' Smart Location database or were derived from them, while others were compiled using additional data sources and the statistical model presented in the associated main article. Specifically, the data presented here contain travel energy use indices for each census tract, reflecting the estimated difference in daily land-based mobility energy use per capita relative to the baseline (the U.S. average) as a result of that environment's particular urban form. </p>
Does pre-sorting by colour using visible and high-energy violet light improve the detection of plant species in honey bee pollen baskets?
<div class="article-section__content en main"> Premise <p>Pollen collected by honey bees from different plant species often differs in color, and this has been used as a basis for plant identification. The objective of this study was to develop a new, low-cost protocol to sort pollen pellets by color using high-energy violet light and visible light to determine whether pollen pellet color is associated with variations in plant species identity.</p> Methods and Results <p>We identified 35 distinct colors and found that 52% of pollen subsamples (<em>n</em> = 200) were dominated by a single taxon. Among these near-pure pellets, only one color consistently represented a single pollen taxon (Asteraceae: Cichorioideae). Across the spectrum of colors spanning yellows, oranges, and browns, similarly colored pollen pellets contained pollen from multiple plant families ranging from two to 13 families per color.</p> Conclusions <p>Sorting pollen pellets illuminated under high-energy violet light lit from four directions within a custom-made light box aided in distinguishing pellet composition, especially in pellets within the same color.</p> </div>
