Permafrost model for the Argentinian Andes - Calibration data set

Supplementary information to the following publication:

Tapia Baldis C, Trombotto Liaudat D. 2020. Permafrost debris-model in Central Andes of Argentina (28°-33° S). Cuadernos de Investigación Geográfica 46, http://doi.org/10.18172/cig.3802

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To predict regional-scale spatial patterns of permafrost occurrence, especially over remote environments with limited data, empiric-statistical models are widely used. This kind of approach correlates permafrost occurrence with topo-climatic factors (altitude, geographic position, slope, aspect, air temperature, ground temperature, solar radiation, etc.) easily available, in some cases. Different combinations of empiric-statistical models were tested to evaluate the permafrost spatial distribution in the study area.

The study area (28° to 33°S and 70°30’ to 69°W) comprises the middle portion of the South American (Argentinian side) Central Andes (17°30’ to 35°S), named Dry Andes. The landscape is expressed as mountain ranges and valleys with 50% of the terrain surface above 3000 m a.s.l. The highest elevations are represented by mountain peaks such us Mercedario (6850 m a.s.l.) or La Ramada (6400 m a.s.l.). The Dry Andes could be further separated into Desert Andes (17°30’ to 31°S) and Central Andes (31° to 35°S), according to precipitation rates and landscape geomorphological characteristics.

Models were trained in a calibration area to evaluate the correlation between geomorphological permafrost indicators (named explanatory variable) and the topoclimatic parameters (predictive variable). A logistic regression model with a logit link function was chosen as a mathematical approach.

Data for model calibration was obtained from the Bramadero river basin, located at 31°50’ S and 70°00’ W in the Central Andes. From a geomorphological point of view, the landscape of the Dry Andes is characterized by the interdigitation of glacial, periglacial, alluvial, fluvial, and gravitational processes. The Bramadero river basin was largely glaciated during the LGM, even today it is possible to recognize erosive forms and glacial deposits all over the main valley and subordinated creeks. Even though Quaternary glacial stages modeled the landscape; periglacial features prevail today. Currently, periglacial processes are active in elevations exceeding 2700 m a.s.l. (lowest limit of seasonal freezing), however, a wide variety of periglacial deposits and permafrost indicating cryoforms occur between 3400 and >4500 m a.s.l. (permafrost periglacial belt).

The complete geomorphological characterization of the Bramadero river basin and the geomorphometric data extracted from every kind of landform were used to set up the permafrost predictive categories. The first predictive category (presence) includes geoforms that indicate current permafrost, such as; active rock glaciers, inactive rock glaciers, protalus lobes, cryoplanation surfaces, and perennial snow patches. The second category (absence) includes geoforms without current permafrost (relict or fossil rock glaciers, bedrock outcrops, glacial abrasion surfaces, debris/mud flows, and Andean wetlands/peatlands types). It also includes geoforms where the presence of permafrost could not be certainly assessed such us: frozen and unfrozen talus slopes, glaciers and covered glaciers, moraines and morainic complexes, debris/snow avalanches, rock avalanches, and rock slides.

The following link can accede model results:

Tapia Baldis, Carla. Calibration of adaptive energy management strategies for fuel cell trucks using real-world driving scenarios

Energy management strategies have a significant impact on the hydrogen economy of fuel cell trucks and the lifetime of battery and fuel cell systems. Usually, the strategy design and calibration involve a multi-objective optimization of performance indexes related to hydrogen consumption, fuel cell transients, battery thermal state, and battery charge control. This contribution presents the calibration of an energy management strategy that is adaptive to battery and ambient temperature. Indeed, fuel cell trucks face critical operating conditions due to high ambient temperatures or high loads on long uphill roads. However, the presented adaptive energy management strategy can effectively avoid thermal issues to preserve the battery life without hindering the hydrogen economy. The strategy calibration can be optimized using a simulation environment consisting of drivetrain components in AVL CRUISE M and vehicle control unit functions in MATLAB Simulink. Moreover, AVL CAMEO can systematically vary the adaptive strategy's curve parameters to find the best trade-off between the key performance indexes. The calibration considers real-world driving cycles of road freight vehicles, including measured speed, road elevation, and variable vehicle mass. The calibration is robust because the performance indexes are optimized over more than 9000 kilometers, covering an extensive range of real-world driving scenarios. Besides the benefits of optimal calibrations, this contribution also provides interesting insights into the energy and thermal management problem of fuel cell trucks.

NEW HORIZONS SWAP JUPITER ENCOUNTER CALIBRATED V4.0
This data set contains Calibrated data taken by the New Horizons Solar Wind Around Pluto instrument during the Jupiter encounter mission phase. This is VERSION 4.0 of this data set. During the Jupiter mission phase, SWAP made near-continuous science observations, taking data between 2 and 12 times per hour. Inbound to Jupiter, real-time science mode data were taken twice per hour, then 12 measurements were recorded per hour in the Jupiter tail. The Jupiter tail observations continue until about 100 days after closest approach, which corresponds to about 2200 RJ downstream. The changes in Version 4.0 were re-running of the ancillary data in the data product, updated geometry from newer SPICE kernels, minor editing of the documentation, catalogs, etc., and resolution of liens from the December, 2014 review, plus those from the May, 2016 review of the Pluto Encounter data sets. No new observations were added with Version 4.0.

EPOXI MARS OBS - MRI CALIBRATED IMAGES V2.0
This dataset contains calibrated 750-nm filter images of Mars acquired by the Deep Impact Medium Resolution Visible CCD (MRI) for the EPOCh project during the second cruise phase of the EPOXI mission. One set of observations was acquired on 20-21 November 2009 to characterize Mars as an analog for extrasolar planets. The observing period lasted approximately 24 hours, and one MRI image was taken simultaneously with the first north/south scan of the HRI IR spectrometer at half-hour intervals to provide context for the spectral scans. Version 2.0 includes the application of a horizontal destriping process, new absolute calibration constants for filters, and revised electronic crosstalk calibration files.
NEW HORIZONS MVIC PLUTO CRUISE CALIBRATED V1.0
This data set contains Calibrated data taken by the New Horizons Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera instrument during the pluto cruise mission phase. This is VERSION 1.0 of this data set. The spacecraft was in hibernation for much of the Pluto Cruise mission phase, and the focus for RALPH (MVIC and LEISA) during Annual CheckOuts one through four (ACO1-4) was preparation for the Pluto Encounter in 2015, including functional tests, and calibrations. Science observations performed during this phase included Uranus and Neptune at phase angles (44 degrees and 34 degrees, respectively) not available from Earth (MVIC), calibrations with Neptune as a navigation test target (MVIC), Sun in the Solar Illumination Assembly (SIA) (MVIC and LEISA), the M6 and M7 clusters (MVIC), and other calibrations (stray light, dark, interference with other instruments).
