International Long-Term Ecological Research Network (ILTER) Atmospheric Deposition and Stream Nitrogen Synthesis

We identified variables controlling stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes, and how they have changed over time, by synthesizing 20 time series ranging from 5 to 51 years of data collected from forest and grassland dominated watersheds across Europe, North America, and East Asia and across four climate types (tropical, temperate, Mediterranean, and boreal) using the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network. We found declining trends in bulk ammonium and nitrate deposition, with ammonium contributing significantly more to atmospheric nitrogen deposition over time. Among sites, there were significant positive relationships between (1) precipitation and stream ammonium and nitrate fluxes and (2) atmospheric nitrogen inputs and stream nitrogen concentrations and fluxes. There were no significant relationships between air temperature and stream nitrogen export. Our long-term data shows that although nitrogen deposition is declining over time, atmospheric nitrogen inputs and precipitation remain the main predictors for nitrogen exported from forested and grassland watersheds. Overall, we also demonstrate that long-term monitoring provides understanding of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling that would not be possible with short-term studies alone. Seasonality Drives Carbon Emissions along a Stream Network

Headwater stream networks contribute a significant amount to the global carbon dioxide terrestrial flux because of high turbulence and coupling with terrestrial environments. Heterogeneity within headwater stream networks, both spatially and temporally, makes measuring and upscaling these emissions challenging because measurements of carbon dioxide in streams are often limited to a few monitoring points. We modified a stream network model to reflect real measurements made under base flow and high flow conditions at Martha Creek in Stabler, WA in the US Pacific Northwest. We found that under high flow conditions, the stream network had much greater total carbon emissions than during low flow conditions (1.22 Mg C day-1 vs. 0.034 Mg C day-1). We attribute this increase to a larger overall stream network area (0.04 km2 vs 0.01 km2) and discharge (1.9 m3/s vs. 0.005 m3/s) in November versus August. Our results demonstrate the need to understand the nonperennial nature of streams when calculating carbon emissions. We compared the stream network emissions with the terrestrial net ecosystem exchange (NEE) estimated by local eddy covariance measurements per area of the watershed (-5.5 Mg C day-1 in August and -2.2 Mg C day-1 in November). Daily stream emissions in November accounted for a much larger percentage of NEE in August (54% vs. 0.62%). We concluded that the stream network can emit a large percentage of the forest NEE in the winter months, and annual estimates of stream network emissions must consider the flow regime throughout the year.

Institutional Collaboration in the US LTER Network based on bibliometric information (1981-2018)

This is a dataset of supplementary materials of an accepted article in Bioscience entitled "Collaboration across time and space in LTER Network". It is based on the bibliography data maintained by LTER Network Office (https://www.zotero.org/groups/2055673/lter_network/items). The analysis was carried out in 2019 with the updated data collecting from individual sites. The dataset contains the basic information that the analysis relies on, and the temporal and spatial patterns of institutional collaboration in the US LTER Network.

Fish richness, density, and biomass data for a network of community-based no-take reserves in northern Thailand.

Intensive fisheries have reduced fish biodiversity and abundance in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. The widespread success of no-take reserves has made them a cornerstone of marine ecosystem-based fisheries management. A set of design principles has emerged to ensure that networks of marine reserves will enhance adjacent fisheries, but the applicability of this paradigm to riverine biodiversity and inland fisheries remains largely untested. Here we show that a diffuse set of 23 community-designated reserves in Thailand’s Salween basin has dramatically increased local fish richness, density, and biomass. We find that several key correlates of protected area success in marine ecosystems-particularly reserve size and enforcement-also predict differences in ecological benefits among riverine reserves. Moreover, occupying a central position in the network confers additional gains, underscoring the importance of connectivity within dendritic river systems. The emergence of network-based benefits is remarkable given that these reserves are young (< 25 years) and arose without formal coordination or spatial planning among communities. Freshwaters are under-represented among the world’s protected areas, and our findings suggest that networks of small reserves offer an effective and generalizable model for protecting biodiversity and augmenting fisheries as the world’s rivers face unprecedented pressures.

SOils DAta Harmonization database (SoDaH): an open-source synthesis of soil data from research networks

This SOils DAta Harmonization (SoDaH) database is designed to bring together soil carbon data from diverse research networks into a harmonized dataset that can be used for synthesis activities and model development. The research network sources for SoDaH span different biomes and climates, encompass multiple ecosystem types, and have collected data across a range of spatial, temporal, and depth gradients. The rich data sets assembled in SoDaH consist of observations from monitoring efforts and long-term ecological experiments. The SoDaH database also incorporates related environmental covariate data pertaining to climate, vegetation, soil chemistry, and soil physical properties. The data are harmonized and aggregated using open-source code that enables a scripted, repeatable approach for soil data synthesis.

temporalNEON: Repository containing raw and cleaned-up organismal data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) useful for evaluating the links between change in biodiversity and ecosystem stability

Organismal data include the following taxonomic groups: small mammals, fish, ground beetles, and aquatic macroinvertebrates. Data were retrieved from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) database in November 2020. We submit both raw data retrieved from NEON as .rds files, R code used to process these data, as well as processed data as .csv files.

Stream stage and water table elevation in hyporheic and ground water from McRae Ck well network, Andrews Experimental Forest, 1989-1993

Measurements of stream stage of McRae Ck and water table heights from a network of shallow wells located adjacent to the stream. Data were collected from September 1989 to September 1992 on an irregular basis to sample both baseflow periods and storm events across seasons of the year. Stage height was read from staff plates permanently located at several location in the mainstem channel and in a small back channel; water table elevations were measured with a weighted measuring tape with a visible signal when the tape touched the water in the well.
