Axial crushing is one of the key energy absorbing mechanisms during a crash event. In this study, various analytical models proposed for calculation of mean crushing force for thin-walled tubular structures are compared with a database of numerical and experimental values to ascertain their accuracy. Improvements to some of the models have also been proposed. Finally a generalized model based on the studied and improved analytical models for prediction of mean crushing force for closed section thin-walled tubular structures is introduced. The generalized model demonstrates high accuracy when compared against experimental/numerical dataset as evidenced by a high coefficient of determination (R^2) value of 0.97 and can therefore be used to estimate the mean crushing force for closed-section thin-walled metallic tubular structures with various cross-sectional shapes and crushing modes early in the design phase.

3D ground reaction force data of walking individuals crossing the vibration-prone experimental pedestrian bridge HUMVIB, Darmstadt, Germany

This data set is obtained within the framework of the DFG research project HUMVIB (Project number 446124066) to investigate human-induced vibrations and human-structure interaction on pedestrian bridges. In total, a set of data from 26 subjects for different walking step frequencies was investigated. Each condition was performed on the vibration-prone HUMVIB Bridge at the Lichtwiese campus of the Technical University of Darmstadt with a vertical natural frequency of 2.02 Hz. Each condition was also performed for the system configuration with the optional center support and consequently much higher frequency of 7.72 Hz. Thereby, each condition was repeated for 10 crossings and with each run 5 single steps were recorded by portable Ground Reaction Force Plates (GRFPs). In this case, the sensor plan 02_HUMVIB_Bridge_with_GRFP.pdf shows that FP1, FP2, FP4, FP5 and FP6 are hit when crossing a bridge. Therefore, under these walking conditions, FP3 only records the mass inertia due to the bridge acceleration or noisy zero signals as a reference.

The measured 3D ground reaction forces have been time-synchronized and measured with a sampling rate of 1,000 Hz. Complementary sensors on the structural response (accelerometers, strain gauges, ...) as well as on the subjects themselves (EMG sensors and MoCap) are less relevant for the analysis of the GRFs and will be published as a supplement after the analysis is completed. However, since FP3 is not hidden by a step of the walking subjects, it can also serve as a structural response sensor and thus not only provide the mass inertia but also the structural acceleration of the bridge. The dataset is well suited for the analysis of GRFs as a function of the tuning or structural acceleration between excitation and natural frequencies of walking individuals on vibration-prone structures. Furthermore, based on the given personal characteristics (height, weight, gender, age), an estimation of the influence of the personal parameters is possible. Finally, based on the size of the sample, the inter- and intra-variability of the persons walking can be investigated for verticals but also horizontal GRFs in general.

Vastus intermedius muscle architecture predicts the late phase of the knee extension rate of force development in recreationally resistance-trained men

Objectives: The current study investigated the correlation between quadriceps muscle architecture and the knee extension rate of force development (RFD).

Design: cross-sectional study.

Methods: Muscle thickness, pennation angle and fascicle length normalized per the thigh-length were measured via ultrasound in vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, vastus intermedius and vastus medialis. The knee extension rate of force was assessed isometrically at 90° knee angle and calculated in different 50-ms epochs (0-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150-200 and 200-250ms). The maximum voluntary contraction was also recorded.

Results: Large correlations were observed between vastus intermedius muscle thickness and the 100-150ms (r=0.694, p=0.004), 150-200ms (r=0.597, p=0.019) and 200-250ms (r=0.546, p=0.045) epochs. Large correlation was observed between vastus intermedius normalized fascicle length and 100-150ms (r=0.570, p=0.043) and large correlations with 150-200ms (r=0.643, p=0.010) and 200-250ms (r=0.629, p=0.012) epochs. Additionally, large correlations were observed between vastus lateralis normalized fascicle length and the 100-150ms (r=0.535, p=0.049), 150-200ms (r=0.629, p=0.016) and 200-250ms (r=0.563, p=0.046) epochs. Vastus intermedius muscle thickness predicted 59% (R2=0.581, p=0.002) of the RFD of the 100-150ms epoch; vastus intermedius muscle thickness and fascicle length predicted 51% (R2=0.506, p=0.029) of the 150-200ms epoch; vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis fascicle length predicted 48% (R2=0.483, p=0.037) of the 200-250ms epoch. No further correlation was observed.

Conclusions: Fascicle length and muscle thickness were observed as predictive of the late phase of the rate of force development. Vastus intermedius muscle architecture has a primary role in the knee extension RFD.
