Dataset with square plots across Sierra Nevada (Spain) where the contours of all juniper shrubs were annotated as polygons using centimetric GPS and very high resolution aerial and satellite RGB images

This dataset is a shapefile of 767 polygons describing the contours of Juniperus communis L. and Juniperus sabina L. shrubs for the year 2021 in rectangular plots across Sierra Nevada. The coordinates of the polygons were obtained from a field work campaign with a differential centimetric GPS, and their contours were drawn manually in QGIS using the Google Earth satellite image for 2020 and the PNOA aerial image for the 2020.

This dataset also contains an excel file describing the features of each polygon: the polygon centroid coordinates, the type of species, the sexgender, the morphotype, the damage in the vegetation cover estimated in the field and telematically, certainty of the digitalization with QGIS and also if the differential centimetric GPS used belongs to the University of Granada or the University of Almeria.

Abundance of Anolis bicaorum, and niche measurements of plots on the island Utila, Honduras

The question of what controls animal abundance has always been fundamental to ecology, but given rapid environmental change, understanding the drivers and mechanisms governing abundance is more important than ever. Here, we determine how multidimensional environments and niches interact to determine population abundance along a tropical habitat gradient. Focusing on the endemic lizard Anolis bicaorum on the island of Utila (Honduras), we evaluate direct and indirect effects of three interacting niche axes on abundance: thermal habitat quality, structural habitat quality, and prey availability. We measured A. bicaorum abundance across a series of thirteen plots and used N-mixture models and path analysis to disentangle direct and indirect effects of these factors. Results showed that thermal habitat quality and prey biomass both had positive direct effects on anole abundance. However, thermal habitat quality also influenced prey biomass, leading to a strong indirect effect on abundance. Thermal habitat quality was primarily a function of canopy density, measured as leaf area index (LAI). Despite having little direct effect on abundance, LAI had a strong overall effect mediated by thermal quality and prey biomass. Our results demonstrate the role of multidimensional environments and niche interactions in determining animal abundance and highlight the need to consider interactions between thermal niches and trophic interactions to understand variation in abundance, rather than focusing solely on changes in the physical environment.

Community composition and species traits and plot positions

Biodiversity decline and its cascading effects through trophic interactions pose a severe threat to ecosystem service worldwide. Within a synthetic conceptual framework for beta-diversity, we proposed a series of hypotheses related to multi-trophic community assembly in subtropical forests. Our results suggested that, resulting from niche-based bottom-up dynamics, producer dissimilarities are predominant in structuring consumer dissimilarity, the degree of which highly depends on the trophic dependency, the diversity facet and the data quality. More importantly, we detected a significant dynamic between niche-based processes (e.g. environmental filtering and competitive exclusion) with the increasing producer dissimilarity. These findings enrich our mechanistic understanding of the 'Diversity Begets Diversity' rule and the complexity of multi-trophic community assembly, which is fundamental and critical for sustainable biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management.
