Distinct type II opsins in the eye decode light properties for background adaptation and behavioural background preference
<p>Crypsis increases survival by reducing predator detection. <i>Xenopus laevis</i> tadpoles decode light properties from the substrate to induce two responses: A cryptic coloration response where dorsal skin pigmentation is adjusted to the colour of the substrate (background adaptation) and a behavioural crypsis where organisms move to align with a specific colour surface (background preference). Both processes require organisms to detect reflected light from the substrate. We explored the relationship between background adaptation and preference and the light properties able to trigger both responses. We also analysed which retinal photosensor (type II opsin) is involved. Our results showed that these two processes are segregated mechanistically, as there is no correlation between the preference for a specific background with the level of skin pigmentation, and different dorsal retina-localized type II opsins appear to underlie the two crypsis modes. Indeed, inhibition of melanopsin affects background adaptation but not background preference. Instead, we propose pinopsin is the photosensor involved in background preference. <i>pinopsin</i> mRNA is co-expressed with mRNA for the <i>sws1</i> cone photopigment in dorsally-located photoreceptors. Importantly, the developmental onset of pinopsin expression aligns with the emergence of the preference for a white background, but after the background adaptation phenotype appears. Furthermore, white background preference of tadpoles is associated with increased <i>pinopsin</i> expression, a feature that is lost in pre-metamorphic froglets along with a preference for a white background. Thus, our data show a mechanistic dissociation between background adaptation and background preference, and we suggest melanopsin and pinopsin, respectively, initiate the two responses.</p>
Highly porous Co-doped NiO nanorods: Facile hydrothermal synthesis and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution properties
<p>Highly porous 3d transition metal oxide nanostructures are opening up the exciting area of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline medium thanks to their good thermal and chemical stability, excellent physiochemical properties, high specific surface area and abundant nanopores. In this paper, highly porous Co-doped NiO nanorods were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The porous rod-like nanostructures were preserved with the added cobalt dopant ranging from 1 to 5 at% but were broken into aggregated nanoparticles at higher concentrations of additional cobalt. The catalytic activity of Co-doped NiO nanostructures for OER in an alkaline medium was assayed. The 5%Co-NiO sample showed a drastically enhanced activity. This result could originate from the combination of advantageous characteristics of highly porous NiO nanorods such as large surface area and high porosity as well as the important role of Co dopant that could provide more catalytic active sites, leading to an enhanced catalytic activity of the nanocatalyst.</p>

Improvement and Application of the Parameterization Scheme for Hydrothermal Properties of Rhizosphere Soil in Alpine Grassland
<p>Plant roots signifificantly altered soil hydrothermal properties but was not typically included in land-surface process models. This omission affected the simulation results of soil water content and temperature, particularly on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) where roots in the shallow soil were generally high. Global grassland above-ground biomass carbon data and root distribution model were used to build a geographically distributed, profifiled alpine grassland roots density dataset for the Community Land Model (CLM). The schemes for soil hydrothermal properties were modified to accommodate soil mineral, organic matter and roots. Compared with the original schemes, the new schemes presented an increasing or decreasing trend. The new schemes were verified by single-point, regional offline simulation, and the influence of alpine grassland roots on simulation results on the QTP were explored. The new schemes could effectively block the downward migration of 0-10 cm soil water, which were beneficial to water conservation. The heat storage capacity of 0-10 cm soil increased obviously, and the thermal conductivity showed a certain seasonal change. Therefore, the simulated dry deviation of 0-10 cm soil water content in the new schemes was significantly reduced. The simulated 0-10 cm soil temperature in the new schemes during soil non-freezing was generally lower than the observed, and the simulated cold deviation of this layer during soil freezing was also reduced.</p>

The resin was degassed before casting into an aluminium-made mould. The resin was cured following the manufacturer's instructions (i: at 90 °C for 24 h. ii: 150 °C for 2 h). The Epopox A-28 was used as an alternative for EPON 828 epoxy resin.</li> <li>The PMMA was in-situ polymerised at the ambient conditions by mixing a liquid methyl methacrylate thermoplastic resin (Elium 188, Arkema, Colombes, France) and dibenzoyl peroxide initiator (BP-50-FT1, United Initiators GmbH, Pullach, Germany) with 3 wt% initiators to resin ratio. The resin was degassed before casting into an aluminium-made mould. </li> </ul> <p><strong>Summary of the tensile testing</strong></p> <p>The quasi-static tensile tests were performed using a universal testing machine (model 5967, Instron, MA, USA). The testing was performed according to the ISO 527 testing standard. The dimensions of the dog-bone shape coupons were 4 mm (thickness) <span class="math-tex">\(× \)</span> 10 mm (width) <span class="math-tex">\(× \)</span> 170 mm (full-length). The gauge length was 50 mm. The specimen was prepared as 1A type in ISO 527. <br> The tensile tests were performed by 30 kN load cell and 2 mm/min displacement rate. The displacement was recorded by a clip-on extensometer.</p>

Altitude-mediated soil properties, not geography or climatic distance, explain the distribution of a tropical endemic herb
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Understanding the ecological processes that govern species' range margins is a fundamental question in ecology with practical implications in conservation biology. The centre-periphery hypothesis (CPH) predicts that organisms have higher abundance at the centre of their geographic range. However, most tests of the CPH often used raster data, assuming that climatic conditions are consistent across one square km. This assumption is not always justified, particularly for species that live in mountainous regions where climatic conditions often vary widely across a small special scale. When using occurrence data, most previous studies do not evenly sample across the species' distribution. We sampled 54 plots of an endemic perennial herb, <i>Thunbergia atacorensis</i> (Acanthanceae), throughout its range in West-Africa to collect biotic and abiotic variables including, <i>Thunbergia</i> density, leaf mass per area, and basal diameter. The basal diameter was used to estimate population demographic structure (skewness). We used these data to build a structural equation model testing the direct and indirect effects of distance from geographic and climatic niche centres, and altitude on density of <i>Thunbergia atacorensis </i>as mediated by abiotic and biotic factors, population skewness, and individual size. Contrary to the prediction of the CPH, plant density did not vary with distance from geographic or climatic niche centre, indicating that even the climatic centre does not necessarily have optimal ecological conditions. However, soil nitrogen and soil potassium mediated the relationship between altitude and plant density. Further, plant size increased with soil nitrogen and soil potassium. We found no direct or mediating effect of interspecific competition on plant density. Our study highlights the relative role that abiotic factors play in shaping species range limits, and the critical role of altitudinal gradient.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

NO2 gas sensing properties of hydrothermally synthesized WO3.nH2O nanostructures
<p><span>Nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) has been identified as a serious air pollutant that threats to our environment, human life and world ecosystems. Therefore, detection of this air pollutant is crucial. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) is one of the best approaches frequently used to detect NO2 at relatively low temperatures. Hydrated tungsten trioxide (</span><span>WO<sub>3</sub>•nH<sub>2</sub>O</span><span>), an n-type semiconductor, is regarded to be a promising material for fabricating gas sensors, which are widely utilized in environmental and safety monitoring. In this work, </span><span>WO<sub>3</sub>•nH<sub>2</sub>O</span><span> nanoparticles have been synthesized using a polyfunctional surfactant-mediated hydrothermal approach in the addition of H<sub>2</sub>C<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> and K<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub> at a molar ratio of 1:1. This paper has also reported the effect of reaction temperature (120°C to 200</span><span>°</span><span>C) on morphological changes and gas sensing performance. The characterization of these synthesized nanostructures was carried out by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The UV absorption peak was obtained around 300 nm. FESEM analysis showed sheet-like structures come together to form flower-type morphology. The synthesized WO<sub>3</sub>•nH<sub>2</sub>O flower-like structures was then used for </span><span>NO<sub>2</sub></span><span> gas sensing application. The prepared sensors showed considerably better sensor response (R<sub>g</sub>/R<sub>a</sub>=17.48) at 185°C for 25 ppm </span><span>NO<sub>2</sub></span><span>. </span></p>

Data from: Thermal failure of diamond tools indicated by diamond degradation: Damage evaluation and property prediction on small image datasets
<p>High temperature induced diamond degradation often leads to the failure of diamond tools. In this work, diamond samples holding different degrees of thermal damage were prepared by heating and sintering. The influence of diamond particle size and processing temperature was investigated through mechanical testing and micromorphology observation, meanwhile, a dataset containing 2870 SEM images showing diamonds with different degrees of degradation was constructed. By modification of VGG16 network, classification models and regression models were developed for thermal damage evaluation and sample property prediction. Training strategies including transfer learning and data augmentation were implemented and verified essential on the small dataset, where drop-out showed no positive effects. Two classification models (3-class and 65-class) were constructed and trained for damage evaluation. Visualized damage feature maps exported from Grad-CAM revealed the influential mechanism of thermal damage on diamonds, which proved the effectiveness of the classification models as well. Under the optimized training strategies, regression models were built for sample property prediction. The models towards toughness index, bending strength loss, relative density and Rockwell hardness were examined. Comparing the output results with real property values in test sets, the first two models matched well, and the latter two showed the opposite. It verified the validity of the regression models for property prediction as they were all established based on diamond damage image datasets. The loss in bending strength loss prediction model was smaller than that of toughness index, indicating bending strength easier to be shorten than impact toughness for diamond/metal composites suffering thermal impacts.</p>

Soil properties 0-60 cm from long-term forest biomass harvesting experiment in Quebec
<p>This is the data set that comes from the compilation from 0 to 60 cm in forest soils subjected to either stem-only harvesting or whole-tree harvesting in the boreal forest in Quebec in te 1980's. Soil sampling was made about 30 years after harvesting treatments.
