Pond data: physical, chemical, and biological characteristics with scientific and United States of America state definitions from literature and legislative surveys
Ponds are often identified by their small size and shallow depths, but the lack of a universal definition hampers science and weakens legal protection. In order to determine a working definition of ‘pond’, we conducted a literature search for scientific definitions, a U.S. state survey for management definitions, and looked at pond ecosystem function using data from the literature search. Our dataset includes physical, chemical, and biological data for 1327 waterbodies ≤ 20 ha in surface area and ≤ 9 m in maximum or mean depth from our literature review. These data have a global distribution, we include a table of latitudes and longitudes, and span many years (1946-2019). We have also included a table of 54 pond definitions from the literature review and a table of U.S. state definitions of ponds, wetlands, and lakes resulting from our survey.
High-frequency water temperature and dissolved oxygen data and derived stability and metabolism metrics for nine lakes in northeastern North America for months before and after Tropical Cyclone Irene, Fall 2011
This dataset is used in the analysis published in the following manuscript: Klug, J.L., D.C. Richardson, H.A. Ewing, B.R.Hargreaves, N. R. Samal, D. Vachon, D.C. Pierson, A. E. Lindsey, D. O'Donnell, S.W. Effler, and K.C. Weathers. 2012. Ecosystem effects of a tropical cyclone on a network of lakes in northeastern North America. Environmental Science and Technology 46(21): 11693–11701. We include Quality Assurance Quality Controlled (QAQC) high-frequency dissolved oxygen, wind speed, and water temperature data from nine lakes and reservoirs in northeastern North America which were near the track of Tropical Cyclone Irene in August 2011. These data were collected using a set of in situ, automated monitoring systems associated with the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) that record data at high frequency (10 min to 6 h). These sensor data were the basis for the derived measures of Schmidt stability, net ecosystem production, respiration, and gross primary production included in the dataset. We also include daily rainfall data collected at on-site or nearby weather stations. All data cover the period from 01 August through 15 October 2011.
Data for 'Weak latitudinal gradients in insect herbivory for dominant rangeland grasses of North America'
Data for Kent et al. Accepted manuscript in Ecology and Evolution, with abstract: Patterns of insect herbivory may follow predictable geographical gradients, with greater herbivory at low latitudes. However, biogeographic studies of insect herbivory often do not account for multiple abiotic factors (e.g. precipitation, soil nutrients) that could underlie gradients. We tested for latitudinal clines in insect herbivory as well as climatic, edaphic, and trait-based drivers of herbivory. We quantified herbivory on five dominant grass species over 23 sites across the Great Plains, USA. We examined the importance of climate, edaphic factors, and traits as correlates of herbivory. Herbivory increased at low latitudes when all grass species were analysed together and for two grass species individually, while two other grasses trended in this direction. Higher precipitation was related to more herbivory for two species but less herbivory for a different species, while higher specific root length was related to more herbivory for one species and less herbivory for a different species. Taken together, results highlight that climate and trait-based correlates of herbivory can be highly contextual and species specific. Patterns of insect herbivory on dominant grasses supports the hypothesis that herbivory increases towards lower latitudes, though weakly, and indicates that climate change may have species-specific effects on plant-herbivore interactions.
Mechanisms influencing physically sequestered soil carbon in temperate restored grasslands in South Africa and North America
This dataset contains a measurement of physically protected carbon (microaggregate-within-macroaggregate C) and potential drivers of physically protected C accumulation during grassland restoration. The data were collected from three independent grassland restorations from agriculture in North America and South Africa. Northeast Kansas, USA data were collected in May 2013. Northeast Free State, RSA data were collected in September–November 2005. Southeast Nebraska, USA data were collected in October 2008–May 2008. Aggregate fractionations were performed by hierarchical wet sieving (Six et al 2000). Carbon and N quantification were done by flash combustion-gas chromatography. Microbial biomass C quantification was performed with chloroform fumigation-incubation (chloroform fumigation-extraction in the case of northeast Kansas). Phospholipid fatty acid biomass analysis was conducted using the methods of Bligh and Dyer (1959).
