Double-Versus Triple-Potential Well Energy Harvesters: Dynamics and Power Output

The present datasets and figures focus on the analysis of BEH and TEH systems where the corresponding depth of the potential well and the width of their characteristics are the same. The efficiency of energy harvesting for TEH and BEH systems assuming similar potential parameters is provided. The basic types of multistable energy harvesters are bistable energy harvesting systems (BEH) and tristable energy harvesting systems (TEH). Providing such parameters allows for reliable formulation of conclusions about the efficiency in both types of systems. These energy harvesting systems are based on permanent magnets and a cantilever beam designed to obtain energy from vibrations. Starting from the bond graphs, we derived the nonlinear equations of motion. Then we followed the bifurcations along the increasing frequency for both configurations. To identify the character of particular solutions, we estimated their corresponding phase portraits, Poincare sections, and Lyapunov exponents. The selected solutions are associated with their voltage output. The results in this numerical study show clearly that the bistable potential is more efficient for energy harvesting provided the corresponding excitation amplitude is large enough. However, the tristable one could work better in the limits of low-level and low-frequency excitations.

Series information

Potential characteristics of energy harvesting systems caused by magnetic field of distributed permanent magnets:

Fig4a_b_V_y1.txt

Fig4a_r_V_y1.txt

Potential characteristics of energy harvesting systems caused by magnetic field effect as in the previous case and an additional change in the stiffness of the flexible cantilever beam:

Fig4b_b_V_y1.txt

Fig4b_r_V_y1.txt

Series of steady states of the system against frequency for two potential wells.

Fig6a_p005.txt

Fig6c_p025.txt

Fig6e_p05.txt

Fig6g_p085.txt

Series of steady states of the system against frequency for three potential wells

Fig6b_p005.txt

Fig6d_p025.txt

Fig6f_p05.txt

Fig6h_p085.txt

The excitation amplitude increases downwards from 0.05 to 0.85 and its values are listed in the corresponding description. Output from the Glacier Energy and Mass Balance (GEMB v1.0) forced with 3-hourly ERA5 fields and gridded to 10km, Greenland and Antarctica 1979-2024

These model output of firn air content (FAC) and surface mass balance (SMB) are from version 1.0 of the open-source Glacier Energy and Mass Balance model. GEMB is a column model of ice sheet and glacier surface-atmospheric energy and mass exchange as well as firn state. GEMB has been integrated into the open-source Ice-Sheet and Sea-level System Model which can be downloaded at https://issm.jpl.nasa.gov/. Here, GEMB is forced with 3-hourly ERA5 output from 1979 through end of 2024. For Greenland and its periphery, the ERA5 surface temperature and downwelling longwave radiation forcing are spatially bias-corrected for each month. All values are adjusted by the difference between the RACMO2.3 and the ERA5 1980-2015 monthly means. The GEMB output is bilinearly interpolated onto a 10km grid, from the native ISSM grid, and the output is given as 5-day output or as monthly.

Measurement of energies and intensities of multiple ionization satellite (MIS) excited in light elements by helium ion beams

TNA project number: 19001708-ST

Measurement of energies and intensities of multiple ionization satellite (MIS) excited in light elements by helium ion beams

Scientific background:

Over 1600 X-ray spectra have been collected from the alpha particle X-ray spectrometers on Mars rovers including the present Curiosity rover. The spectra are excited by the radionuclide 244Cm, which emits 5 MeV He ions for PIXE and Pu L X-rays for XRF. These spectra provide elemental analysis of rocks, soils and dust as part of the quest to identify formerly habitable (water-bearing) environments. Applicant is a member of the Curiosity APXS team within NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory. Excitation of K X-rays by 5 MeV He ions produces also energy-shifted satellites due to 1, 2 or 3 L-shell spectator vacancies. These cause significant distortion of the diagram lines and worsen the quality of spectrum fits by the GUPIX(Mars) code. An MIS database is needed to support a correction procedure that is already devised. This work will increase analytical accuracy and will also support more accurate terrestrial PIXE analysis using alpha beams, especially when partnered with RBS; this could lead to increased use of these two IBA methods in a complementary manner.

Measurements performed within TNA project:

The wavelength-dispersive in-vacuum x-ray spectrometer of J. Stefan Institute (Ljubljana, Slovenia) [1] have been used to record high energy resolution KaLN X-ray spectra of Ca and Cr induced in collisions with MeV alpha particles. The targets used were metallic Cr, Cr2O3, and CaF2. The KaLN X-ray spectra of Cr and Cr2O3 were measured using three different energies of He ions, namely 3 MeV, 4 MeV and 5 MeV. For CaF2 we have collected only spectra induced with 5 MeV He beam. The main purpose of the experiment was to record KaLN spectra with good enough statistics to determine precisely energy/intensity of the corresponding satellite lines. The results for the energy shifts and relative intensities of the groups will be incorporated in the MIS database providing an empirical means for inclusion of one peak per satellite group when modelling energy-dispersive spectra (GUPIX(Mars) code).

[1] M. Kavčič, M. Budnar, A. Mühleisen, F. Gasser, M. Žitnik, K. Bučar, R. The horizontal axis of the detector corresponds to the dispersion axis and diffracted photons are detected at different horizontal positions according to their wavelength, the vertical axis of the detector serves mainly to accumulate more statistics. The final emission spectra are obtained from the corresponding detector files using the home-written data processing software.

Ensemble statistics for modelled Eddy Kinetic Energy in the Southern Ocean

This dataset contains surface eddy kinetic energy over the Southern Ocean region, sourced from a 50-member ensemble of 0.25° ocean model simulations. It is used in the paper "Circumpolar variations in the chaotic nature of Southern Ocean eddy dynamics" published in Journal of Geophysical Research - Oceans.

This dataset has been computed from the OceaniC Chaos – ImPacts, strUcture, predicTability (OCCIPUT) global ocean/sea-ice ensemble simulation. It is composed of 50 members with a horizontal resolution of 1/4° and 75 geopotential levels (Bessières et al., 2017, Penduff et al., 2014). The numerical configuration is based on the version 3.5 of the NEMO model (Madec, 2008). The 50 members were started on January 1st 1960 from a common 21-year spinup. A small stochastic perturbation is applied to the equation of state of sea water (as in Brankart, 2013) within each member during 1960, then switched off during the rest of the simulation. This 1-year perturbation generates an ensemble spread which grows and saturates after a few months up to a few years depending on the region. The 50 members are driven through bulk formulae during the whole 1960-2015 simulation by the same realistic 6-hourly atmospheric forcing (Drakkar Forcing Set DFS5.2, Dussin et al., 2016) derived from ERA interim atmospheric reanalysis. Data is for the period 1979-2015.

The sea level anomaly is found according to Close et al (2020) and converted into surface geostrophic velocity anomaly using the geostrophic relation. This velocity field is then used to calculate the eddy kinetic energy (EKE). Data is averaged over calendar month, and restricted to the latitude range 40°-60°S. A full description of this process is included in the companion paper.

The dataset includes EKE files (eke_0??.nc), with monthy EKE saved for the period 1979-2015 for each ensemble member, and a single file (tau.nc) for the monthly-averaged wind stress over the same period.

Low energy MeV SIMS yield measurements of various inorganic samples

The low energy range (a few 100 keV to a few MeV) primary ion mode in MeV Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (MeV SIMS) and its potential in exploiting the capabilities of conventional (keV) SIMS and MeV SIMS simultaneously was investigated. The aim is to see if in this energy range both types of materials, inorganic and organic, can be simultaneously analyzed. A feasibility study was conducted, first by analyzing the dependence of secondary ion yields in Indium Tin Oxide (ITO – In2O5Sn) and leucine (C6H13NO2) on various primary ion energies and charge states of Cu beam, within the scope of equal influence of electronic and nuclear stopping. Expected behavior was observed for both targets (mainly nuclear sputtering for ITO and electronic sputtering for leucine). MeV SIMS images of samples containing separate regions of Cr and leucine were obtained using both keV and MeV primary ions. Based on the image contrast and measured data, the benefit of a low energy beam is demonstrated by Cr+ intensity leveling with leucine [M+H]+ intensity, as opposed to a significant contrast at higher energy. It is estimated that by lowering the energy, leucine [M+H]+ yield efficiency lowers roughly 20 times as a price for gaining about 10 times larger efficiency of Cr+ yield, while leucine [M+H]+ yield still remains sufficiently pronounced.
