Proximity-sensors on GPS collars reveal fine-scale predator-prey behavior during a predation event: A case study from Scandinavia

Although the advent of high-resolution GPS tracking technology has helped increase our understanding of individual and multi-species behavior in wildlife systems, detecting and recording direct interactions between free-ranging animals remains difficult. In 2023, we deployed GPS collars equipped with proximity sensors (GPS proximity collars) on brown bears (Ursus arctos) and moose (Alces alces) as part of a multi-species interaction study in central Sweden. On 6 June, 2023, a collar on an adult female moose and a collar on an adult male bear triggered on each other's UHF signal and started collecting fine-scale GPS positioning data. The moose collar collected positions every 2 minutes for 89 minutes and the bear collar collected positions every 1 minute for 41 minutes. On 8 June, field personnel visited the site and found a female neonate moose carcass with clear indications of bear bite marks on the head and neck. During the predation event, the bear remained at the carcass while the moose moved back and forth, moving towards the carcass site about 5 times. The moose was observed via drone with 2 calves on 24 May and with only one remaining calf on 9 June. This case study describes, to the best of our knowledge, the first instance of a predation event between two free-ranging, wild species recorded by GPS proximity collars. Both collars successfully triggered and switched to finer-scaled GPS fix rates when the individuals were in close proximity producing detailed movement data for both predator and prey during and after a predation event. We suggest that, combined with standard field methodology, GPS proximity collars placed on free-ranging animals offer the ability for researchers to observe direct interactions between multiple individuals and species in the wild without the need for direct visual observation.

Kidney transplantation waiting times and risk of cardiovascular events and mortality: a retrospective observational cohort study in Taiwan

Objectives: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are at a high risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs), and kidney transplantation (KT) has been reported to improve risk of CVEs and survival. As the association of KT timing on long-term survival and clinical outcomes remains unclear, we investigated the association of different KT waiting times on clinical outcomes.

Design: Retrospective observational cohort study.

Setting: We conducted an observational cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Adult patients who initiated kidney transplantation therapy from 1997 to 2013 were included.

Participants: A total of 3562 adult patients who initiated uncomplicated KT therapy were included and categorized into four groups according to KT waiting times after ESRD: Group 1 (<1 year), Group 2 (1–3 years), Group 3 (3–6 years), and Group 4 (>6 years).

Primary outcome measure: The main outcome was a composite of all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke, based on the primary diagnosis in medical records during hospitalization.

Results: Compared with Group 1, the adjusted risk of primary outcome events (all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke) increased by 1.67 times in Group 2 (95% CI: 1.40–2.00; P <0.001), 2.17 times in Group 3 (95% CI: 1.73–2.71; P <0.001), and 3.10 times in Group 4 (95% CI: 2.21–4.35; P <0.001). The rates of primary outcome events were 6.7%, 13.4%, and 14.0% within five years, increasing to 19.5%, 26.3%, and 30.8% within 10 years in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that early KT is associated with superior long-term cardiovascular outcomes compared to late KT in selected ESRD patients receiving uncomplicated KT, suggesting that an early KT could be a better treatment option for ESRD patients who are eligible for transplantation.

CeA Psilocin fiber photometry study: Data and custom code from experiments looking at changes in calcium dynamics in response to an air puff events

Psilocybin, and its active metabolite psilocin, have been shown to elicit rapid and long-lasting symptom improvements in a variety of affective psychiatric illnesses. However, the specific mechanisms behind these therapeutic effects remain relatively unknown. The central amygdala (CeA) is a primary output region within the extended amygdala that is heavily dysregulated in affective psychiatric disorders. Here, we utilized fiber photometry to measure changes in CeA reactivity to an aversive air puff stimulus after psilocin administration, both acutely and at varying prolonged time points. We found that administration of psilocin increased reactivity acutely in females, but not males. Additionally, we show that one dose of psilocin produced decreases in reactivity in males, but not females, 28-days post administration, with decreases seen as early as 2-days post administration. We further report stimulus-specific changes in CeA reactivity after psilocin with differential responsivity to an aversive air puff stimulus and an auditory stimulus. We also measured changes in behavioral response to the air puff stimulus and report sex differences in exploratory behavior but not threat responding or general locomotion. This study provides evidence that a single dose of psilocin can elicit sex-specific, dynamic, and enduring changes in CeA reactivity to an aversive stimulus. These data are an important step towards dissecting circuit-based mechanisms underlying the effects of psychedelics.

Disentangling the impact of event- and annual-scale precipitation extremes on critical-zone hydrology in semiarid loess: A case study in apple tree plantation

The dataset is the basic data of the author's paper ' Disentangling the impact of event-and annual-scale precipitation extremes on critical-zone hydrology in semiarid loess - a case study in apple tree plantation '. The main content of this paper is to study the hydrological effect of extreme precipitation on the critical area of semi-arid loess. Taking apple plantation as an example, the data set includes the soil moisture and soil temperature data monitored in the field and the apple tree transpiration data. The measured data are used to calibrate and verify the model used in this paper. The water vapor flux, apple tree evapotranspiration and soil leakage data of the simulated soil profile are also included to analyze the hydrological effect of extreme precipitation on the critical area of loess.
