50 Years of Art Song & Gender on Major European Stages, Part 1 (Austria): Vienna's Konzerthaus, Musikverein & Salzburg Festspiele Song Recitals 1970 - 2020

<p>3 .csv files containing names, years and gender breakdown (m=male, f=female, b=both) of pianists, singers, and composers featured vocal recitals on the three most prestigious stages in Austria, the Musikverein an Konzerthaus in Vienna and at the Salzburger Festpiele between 1970 and 2020.</p> <p>Data was scraped by the author from the Festspiele digital archive (https://archive.salzburgerfestspiele.at/archiv), the concert archives of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (https://www.musikverein.at/en/archive/) and the Konzerthaus databank (https://konzerthaus.at/datenbanksuche) and is part of an ongoing project to visibilize the gendered nature of collaborative piano at the most prestigious levels. Climate-driven dietary change on the Colorado Plateau, USA and implications for gender-specific foraging patterns

<p>Complementary archaeological and paleoenvironmental datasets from North Creek Shelter (Colorado Plateau, Utah, USA) are analyzed using the diet breadth model, revealing human dietary patterns during the early and middle Holocene. Abundance indices are derived from botanical and faunal datasets and along with stone tools, are used to test the prediction that increasing aridity caused the decline of high-return resources. This prediction appears valid with respect to botanical resources, as high-ranked plants drop out of the diet after 9800 cal BP and replaced with low-ranked, small seeds. The prediction is not met, however, with respect to faunal resources: high-ranked artiodactyls are consistently abundant in the diet. The effects of climate change on dietary choices are also examined, finding that increased aridity coincides with greater use of small seeds and ground stone tools, but not with increases in low-ranked fauna, such as leporids. The patterns observed from the North Creek Shelter botanical and faunal datasets may reflect different foraging strategies between men and women, thus accounting for the discrepancy that low-ranked plant resources became increasingly abundant in the diet without a corresponding decrease in abundance of high-ranked artiodactyls. If so, then archaeological records with similar datasets should be re-examined with this perspective.</p>

Gender-associated outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention with a third-generation, ultrathin-strut drug-eluting stent: a real world, single-center experience.

<p>This record contains raw data related to the article:&nbsp;Gender-associated outcomes following percutaneous coronary intervention with a third-generation, ultrathin-strut drug-eluting stent: a real-world, single-center experience.</p> <p>ABSTRACT&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Introduction.</strong> In recent years the new third-generation, ultrathin bioresorbable-polymer sirolimus-eluting stent (BP-SES), characterized by some of the thinnest struts among commercially available devices (60-80 &micro;m) and an amorphous silicon carbide coating, has been introduced for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Aim of the present study was to assess different clinical outcomes and safety of this drug-eluting stent in male and female patients in a real-world setting.</p> <p><strong>Methods. </strong>The present study is a retrospective analysis including all patients treated with BP-SES between January 2017 and December 2019 at a single, high-volume center. Follow-up was performed by outpatient visit or by telephone contact. The main study outcome was target lesion failure (TLF), defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, target vessel myocardial infarction or target lesion revascularization.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Overall, 66 (15.9%) female and 349 (84.1%) male patients were included; women were older (median age 70 vs. 66, p=0.003) and with lower BMI (25.0 vs. 26.1, p=0.010) compared to men, with no other relevant differences in baseline characteristics. Indication for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was acute coronary syndrome in 86 (20.7%) of the cases, with no significant differences between male and female patients. A total of 558 lesions were treated with BP-SES stents, 90 in women and 468 in men (1.36 vs. 1.34 lesions per patient, p=0.83); cumulative stent length (33.6 mm vs. 38.4 mm, p=0.078) and mean stent diameter (2.92 mm vs. 3.0 mm, p=0.39) &nbsp;did not differ in women compared to men. Technical and clinical success was achieved in all patients. Stent thrombosis (ST) occurred in 2 (0.5%) patients, both males. TLF occurred in 10 (2.9%) men and in 2 (3.0%) women after a median follow-up of 402 days, without significant differences at log-rank analysis (2.34 events per 100 patient-years in males, 2.53 in females; p=0.80).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions. </strong>Ultrathin struts BP-SES showed a safe and effective option for the treatment of CAD in both women and men, with very low ST rate and favorable long-term outcomes</p>

The productivity puzzle in invasion science: Declining but persisting gender imbalances in research performance

<p>We analyzed 27,234 publications published since the rise of the field of invasion science in 1980 to evaluate the presence of gender differences in research productivity, the extent of collaboration, and the research impact of those differences. Our analysis revealed significantly fewer female- than male-authored publications, both per capita and as a group, and the underrepresentation of women as first and single authors persists despite improvements in the gender gap. At the current rate of increase, gender parity in first authorship will not be achieved until 2100, and men will continue to constitute the principal voice of first or single authors in invasion science. Women collaborate with fewer coauthors and are cited less frequently than men, on average, which may influence recruitment and retention to more senior academic positions. These gender disparities in this aspect of research performance suggest that, although the gender gap is lessening, women experience barriers in invasion science.</p>

ECG and EEG stress features for: ECG and EEG based detection and multilevel classification of stress using machine learning for specified genders: A preliminary study

<p>Mental health, especially stress, plays a crucial role in the quality of life. During different phases (luteal and follicular phases) of the menstrual cycle, women may exhibit different responses to stress from men. This, therefore, may have an impact on stress detection and classification accuracy of machine learning models that genders are not taken into account. However, this has never been investigated before. In addition, only a handful of stress detection devices are scientifically validated. To this end, this work proposes stress detection and multilevel stress classification models for unspecified and specified genders through ECG and EEG signals. Models for stress detection are achieved through developing and evaluating multiple individual classifiers. On the other hand, stacking technique is employed to obtain models for multilevel stress classification. ECG and EEG features extracted from 40 subjects (21 females and 19 males) were used to train and validate the models. In the low&amp;high combined stress condition, RBF-SVM and kNN yielded the highest average classification accuracy for females (79.81%) and males (73.77%), respectively. Combining ECG and EEG, the average classification accuracy increased to at least 87.58% (male, high stress) and up to 92.70% (female, high stress). For multilevel stress classification from ECG and EEG, the accuracy for females was 62.60% and for males was 71.57%. This study shows that the difference in genders influences the classification performance for both the detection and multilevel classification of stress. The developed models can be used for both personal (through ECG) and clinical (through ECG and EEG) stress monitoring with and without taking genders into account.</p>

Data for: Gender medicine teaching increases medical students' gender awareness: results of a quantitative online survey

<p><span><strong>Background</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Gender medical knowledge is insufficiently integrated into university teaching in Germany. Gender awareness represents a key competence to integrate this knowledge into one's medical practice. This study is the first survey of the gender awareness of medical students in Germany.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span> </strong></p> <p><span>From April to July 2021, a quantitative cross-sectional survey in an online format using the 'Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale' (2008) was conducted at four German universities (Charité Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and the University of Cologne) with a varied implementation of teaching gender medicine. Students indicated their agreement or disagreement with assumptions and knowledge about the influence of gender in everyday medical practice (gender sensitivity), as well as gender role stereotypes towards patients and physicians (gender role ideology). </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results </span></strong></p> <p><span>The 750 included participants showed a relatively high gender sensitivity and low gender role stereotyping towards patients and doctors. The curricular implementation of gender medicine of the universities showed to have a significant influence on the students' gender sensitivity, as well as on their gender role stereotyping towards patients. Students who reported having taken classes in gender medicine showed significantly higher level of gender sensitivity. Cis-males showed significantly lower gender sensitivity and significantly higher gender role stereotyping.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Implementation of gender medicine in the medical curriculum, attending courses on gender education and one's gender have a significant impact on medical students' gender competencies. These results support the need for structural integration of gender in medical education and gender trainings at medical schools in Germany.</span></p>

Toileting behaviours of the UK public: insights for reducing gender bias wastewater-based epidemiology sampling strategies

<p>Cross-sectional survey results from a toileting behaviour survey conducted&nbsp;between the 27th to the 28th of June 2022. Participants (<em>n</em>&nbsp;= 2109) were aged 18 years or older and were living in the UK.&nbsp;The survey consisted of 17 closed-ended questions, with 7 of the questions addressing specific demographic topics and 10 questions addressed toileting behaviour. The questionnaire was designed by a team consisting of environmental microbiologists, public health specialists, wastewater-based epidemiologists, and social scientists, based on the study objectives and incorporating information from previous studies on the same topic.&nbsp; First, self-report questions were asked on typical frequency of urination and defecation, followed by self-reports of frequency of urination and defecation at a variety of locations including at home, at work, educational buildings, transport hubs, and in public toilets. The comfort in urination/defecation at these locations for defecation and urination was also measured. Other questions about toileting behaviour and health monitoring were measured by statements with a 5-point Likert scale (e.g., strongly disagree to strongly agree).&nbsp;</p>
