Main-sequence pulsar: the peculiar subset of hot magnetic stars

<p>In my talk, I will describe some peculiar phenomena observed from a subset of hot magnetic stars, also known as &#39;main-sequnce pulsar&#39;s and discuss their usefulness. This class of stars is distinguished from the rest of the population by their ability to produce highly directed coherent radio emission via electron cyclotron maser emission (ECME) in their magnetospheres. The fundamental difference between the two classes is however still vague. I will describe our efforts to understand this difference; this includes a survey being carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio telescope (GMRT) in order to find more hot magnetic stars that show coherent radio emission, and also wideband observations taken with two telescopes: the GMRT and the Very Large Array (VLA), of the already known coherent radio emitters to find out the bandwidth of the emission process. In this process, we have also come across certain new phenomena like the inversion of circular polarization and that of the sequence of ECME pulse arrival with frequency. I will discuss the implications of these new revelations and their potential to become tools for estimating plasma density close to the stellar surface, as well as constraining the inhomogeneity and asymmetry in the magnetosphere.</p>

Hot carrier extraction from 2D semiconductor photoelectrodes

<p>Hot carrier-based energy conversion systems could double the efficiency of conventional solar energy technology or drive photochemical reactions that would not be possible using fully thermalized, "cool" carriers, but current strategies require expensive multi-junction architectures. Using an unprecedented combination of photoelectrochemical and in situ transient absorption spectroscopy measurements, we demonstrate ultrafast (&lt;50 fs) hot exciton and free carrier extraction under applied bias in a proof-of-concept photoelectrochemical solar cell made from earth-abundant and potentially inexpensive monolayer (ML) MoS<sub>2</sub>. Our approach facilitates ultrathin 7 Å charge transport distances over 1 cm<sup>2</sup> areas by intimately coupling ML-MoS<sub>2</sub> to an electron-selective solid contact and a hole-selective electrolyte contact. Our theoretical investigations of the spatial distribution of exciton states suggest greater electronic coupling between hot exciton states located on peripheral S atoms and neighboring contacts likely facilitates ultrafast charge transfer. Our work delineates future 2D semiconductor design strategies for practical implementation in ultrathin photovoltaic and solar fuels applications.</p>

Too hot or too disturbed? Temperatures more than hikers affect circadian activity of females in northern chamois

<p>This dataset contains: i) the activity level recorded by activity sensors for each 5-minutes boot for each individual, ii) the mean daily temperature assessed from ERA5 reanalysis combined with a micro-climate model, iii) the individual exposure to human disturbance for 62 adult female chamois monitored in the National Game and Hunting Reserve of Les Bauges massif (NGHRB), France, between June and September 2004-2020. This dataset is used in the analyses of the scientific paper &ldquo;Too hot or too disturbed? Temperatures more than hikers affect circadian activity of females in northern chamois&quot; (in prep).</p>

"The sound comes from a meadow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The meadow is at an elevation of 2400 meters near a mountain named Olancha Peak, which is 3700 meters in altitude. Ihave a group of friends with which Ibackpack (trek) into the mountains. Our goal was to spend some time in the mountains and hike to the top of Olancha Peak (…) By the time we reached the meadow, we were in a forest and there was still snow on the ground in some places. We took the trip in June of 2006. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a large mountain range. Much of the range is protected by national parks or preserved areas we call 'wilderness areas' (…) Ihave been backpacking for nearly 40 years and Iwill hopefully continue with this challenging activity for 40 years more! Many of my friends are much younger than Iam and it gives me much satisfaction to be able to have as much or more stamina for this activity than they have! When we are on these trips, we hike up peaks, catch fish, drink some whiskey around campfires and enjoy our time in the beautiful solitude. My memories of this trip were of the steep, hot hike from the desert to the cool meadow; the overall beauty of the nature, the absolute solitude of our campsite near the meadow; the strenuous hike to the top of Olancha Peak; the camaraderie of my friends; and, of course the sound of the frogs in the meadow. The frog sounds were astounding to me and Iwould listen in awe of the creature's instinctual desire to reproduce and continue the existence of their kind. Surely there were different species in the meadow for some of the frog sounds were different than others. The sounds only occurred after the Sun went down for the evening.
