Data from: Polarimetry of Pinctada fucata nacre indicates myostracal layer interrupts nacre structure
The inner layer of many bivalve and gastropod molluscs consists of iridescent nacre, a material that is structured like a brick wall with bricks consisting of crystalline aragonite and mortar of organic molecules. Myostracal layers formed during shell growth at the point of muscle attachment to the shell can be found interspersed within the nacre structure. Little has been done to examine the effect the myostracal layer has on subsequent nacre structure. Here we present data on the structure of the myostracal and nacre layers from a bivalve mollusc, Pinctada fucata. Scanning electron microscope imaging shows the myostracal layer consists of regular crystalline blocks. The nacre before the layer consists of tablets approximately 400 nm thick, while after the myostracal layer the tablets are approximately 500 nm thick. A new technique, imaging polarimetry, indicates that the aragonite crystals within the nacre following the myostracal layer have greater orientation uniformity than before the myostracal layer. The results presented here suggest a possible interaction between the myostracal layer and subsequent shell growth.
Data from: Pardon the interruption: goal proximity, perceived spare time, and impatience
There is no worse time to be interrupted than right now. Being close to attaining a goal to complete a focal task increases the attractiveness of that task compared to an interrupting task (study 1), makes people less willing to take on some otherwise attractive interruption than if they were farther away from completion (studies 2, 3, and 4), and causes them to perceive that in that moment they have little spare time (studies 3 and 4). Consumers immersed in goal pursuit are affected by local progress on an individual subgoal that supports an overarching goal even if this has no effect on the timing of attaining the overarching goal. Observers do not appreciate the motivating power of proximity to completing subgoals, and this leads them to mispredict the behavior of others (study 5).
Multisensory integration facilitates perceptual restoration of an interrupted call in frog

How to render an interrupted sound as a complete signal is a common challenge faced by human and non-human animals during vocal communication. Using video and audio playbacks, we showed that neither inserting white noise into the silent gap of an interrupted call nor displaying the dynamic inflating-deflating vocal sac in that same gap restored attraction of the call equivalent to that of a complete call. Simultaneously presenting a dynamic vocal sac along with white noise in the gap, however, rescued the interrupted call making it as attractive as a complete call. This suggests that the multisensory cue might have caused female frogs to "hear" the missing sound as happens when humans experience auditory induction. Regardless, such novel multisensory integration suggests that multimodal signals can provide insurance against imperfect sender coding in a noisy environment, and the communication benefits to the receiver from multisensory integration may be an important selective force favoring multimodal signal evolution.
