Patterns of bilateral asymmetry and allometry in Late Devonian Polygnathus conodonts

<p>Conodont animals were jawless vertebrates equipped with a feeding apparatus composed of several tooth-like elements. The P1 elements, at the rear of the apparatus, are well preserved and abundant in the sediments, and their temporal evolution constitutes a tracer of ecological interactions and/or abiotic changes in the water column. However, occlusion occurred in these animals between paired right and left elements, occasioning bilateral asymmetry, which, together with allometric growth, may obliterate the temporal differences. This study aimed at disentangling these different components of morphological variation in Late Devonian <em>Polygnathus</em> P1 elements. An extensive 2D geometric morphometric analysis of the platform shape was performed and completed by a 3D study on a subset of elements. The 2D and 3D morphometric quantifications provided highly congruent results, showing that the 2D shape provides a good approximation of the element geometry. The 3D analysis, however, provides a more complete description of the geometrical changes involved in growth and bilateral asymmetry, providing insights on the constraints related to occlusion. In complement, the 2D analysis allowed a quantitative assessment of the variation between and within species, showing that allometry and bilateral asymmetry were differently expressed depending on the species considered. This suggests that constraints imposed on pairing by the morphology of the elements, and the pattern of bilateral asymmetry, varied even among related species. The within-species variation was so important that it obliterated temporal trends; a relationship of Polygnathus shape and conodont biofacies variations through the Famennian suggested an evolution driven by ecological interactions between conodonts.</p>

Image stack, PLY-files and a NEX-file accompanying: A new symmoriiform from the Late Devonian of Morocco: novel jaw function in ancient sharks

<p>We describe the small chondrichthyan Ferromirum oukherbouchi n.gen. et sp. from the Famennian (Late Devonian) of the Maïder region in Morocco. This chondrichthyan is exceptionally well preserved and displays not only mineralized soft tissues but also undeformed cartilages of the head, gills, and shoulder girdle. A reconstruction of the head using 3D-prints revealed a previously unknown kind of jaw articulation. Here, we make the original cropped image stack and PLY-files of the single cartilaginous elements accessible. Additionally, a nexus-file with the character matrix used for the cladogram shown in the article is included.</p>

Authigenic carbonate burial within the Late Devonian Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and its impact on the global carbon cycle

<p>The complete dataset for the research project entitled <i>Authigenic carbonate burial within the Late Devonian Western Canada Sedimentary Basin and its impact on the global carbon cycle</i>. Within this zip file includes an excel file compiling a list of rock samples and their corresponding stable carbon and oxygen isotope compositions as well as their inorganic carbon content. Rock samples are grouped according to formation name, depositional environment and stratigraphic height. Along with the excel data compilation are two supplementary figures meant to accompany the publication of this research. &nbsp;Figure S1 illustrates coulometry-measured inorganic carbon content of shale samples plotted with respect to their respective IRMS beam area. Figure S2 illustrates a rolling window analysis of the covariability between the d13C and d18O composition of each sample grouped according to their respective core and field sections. A window size of 20 samples was used.</p>

<p>Phenotypic variation is the raw material of evolution. Standing variation can facilitate response to selection along "lines of least evolutionary resistance", but selection itself might alter the structure of the variance. Shape was quantified using 2D geometric morphometrics in <i>Palmatolepis </i>conodonts through the Late Devonian period. Patterns of variance were characterized along the record by the variance-covariance matrix (P-matrix) and its first axis (Pmax). The Late Frasnian was marked by environmental oscillations culminating with the Frasnian/Famennian mass extinction. A shape response was associated with these fluctuations, together with a deflection of the Pmax and the P-matrix. Thereafter, along the Famennian, <i>Palmatolepis </i>mean shape shifted from broad elements with a large platform to slender elements devoid of platform. This shift in shape was associated with a reorientation of Pmax and the P-matrix, due to profound changes in the functioning of the elements selecting for new types of variants. Both cases provide empirical evidences that moving adaptive optimum can reorient phenotypic variation, boosting response to environmental changes. On such time scales, the question seems thus not to be whether the P-matrix is stable, but how it is varying in response to changes in selection regimes and shifts in adaptive optimum.</p>

Data from: Allometry in Late Devonian Podocopa ostracods (Crustacea) and its implications for Ostracoda ontogeny

<p><span>Podocopa ostracods abounds in various marine and non-marine habitats since the early Palaeozoic and leave diversified fossil records in strata worldwide. </span><span>They are</span> <span>particularly useful for stratigraphic correlation and paleoenvironmental and paleogeographical reconstructions. </span><span>However, being the most numerous ostracods during the Palaeozoic, their origins, evolution, ontogeny and phylogeny remain poorly defined. This paper represents the first study of morphological variation in Devonian Platycopida (an order of Podocopa) ostracods using a geometric morphometric approach. Our results identify substantial shape variation for <em>Cribroconcha</em> <em>honggulelengensis</em> from the Upper Devonian Hongguleleng Formation of </span>western Junggar, NW China, demonstrating a remarkable change to those juveniles <span>between stages A-3 and A-2</span><span>.</span><span> Using linear regressions between Principal component scores from right lateral view and carapace length,</span> <span>we demonstrate allometric growth patterns for the species</span><span> <em>C</em>. <em>honggulelengensis</em></span><span>.</span>The body plan of <em>C</em>. <em>honggulelengensis</em> developed along with the ontological variable, i.e., from an ovate outline with rare pores to an oblong outline with dense and large pores. <span>Environmental factors play a major role in shape determination during ontogeny of <em>C</em>. <em>honggulelengensis</em>.</span></p>

Data for: Variation in eye lenses of two new Late Devonian phacopid trilobites from western Junggar, NW China

<p>The Suborder Phacopina, characterized by schizochroal eyes, is among the most common groups of trilobites in Devonian strata. The marine sediments of the Famennian in western Junggar, Xinjiang, contain abundant low-disparity phacopids, which have previously been designated to <em>Omegops</em> <em>accipitrinus</em> <em>mobilis</em>, <em>Phacops</em> <em>circumspectans</em> <em>tuberculosus</em>, and <em>Omegops</em> <em>cornelius</em>, based on small numbers of poorly preserved specimens. In this study, these phacopids were identified as two new species of <em>Omegops</em>, <em>O</em>. <em>honggulelengensis</em> sp. nov. and <em>O</em>. <em>xiangi</em> sp. nov., based on nearly 200 well-preserved specimens. The intraspecific variations of eye-lenses of these specimens were quantitatively analyzed. Based on differences in the total number, number of dorso-ventral files, and arrangement of the eye lenses, the absence of lenses in the middle part of the visual surface, and asymmetry of the number and/or arrangement of lenses in the two eyes, it was concluded that the reasons for intraspecific variation in eye lenses of Late Devonian <em>Omegops</em> from western Junggar were different from previously described factors, but were likely genetic or embryological malfunctions, or abnormalities caused by pathological conditions. Diversity of lenses in the schizochroal eyes shows that the number and arrangement of eye lenses were not stable in Phacopina. Therefore, many specimens are needed for quantitative study to determine the true characteristics of the number or arrangement of eye lenses when these features are used in the systematic taxonomy of Phacopina.</p>
