Development of Metals Corrosion Maps of Arkansas and Maintenance of Cross-Drains

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Corrosion potential of metallic structures in alluvial soils is governed by chemical and electromagnetic properties of the soils. Geotechnical engineers are generally more concerned about different types of soils and their physical and mechanical properties than the chemical aspects. The main objective of this study is to analyze the geotechnical, electrochemical and electromagnetic properties of soils in Arkansas. Important parameters (e.g., soil resistivity) related to corrosion potential of metal culverts have been predicted through neural network (NN) models. The developed NN models have been trained and verified by using laboratory test results of soil samples collected from Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), and survey data obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). Finally, the Geographic Information System (GIS) based corrosion risk maps of three different types of metal pipes have been developed based on the available soil properties, metal properties, and water quality data. The developed maps will help ARDOT engineers to assess corrosion potential of metal pipes prior to the new construction and repair projects and use proper culvert and cross drain materials.&quot;</p>

A sexually-selected male weapon characterised by strong additive genetic variance and no evidence for sexually antagonistic polyphenic maintenance

<p><span>Sexual selection and sexual antagonism are important drivers of eco-evolutionary processes. The evolution of traits shaped by these processes depends on their genetic architecture, which remains poorly studied. Here, implementing a quantitative genetics approach using diallel crosses of the bulb mite, <em>Rhizoglyphus</em> <em>robini</em>, we investigated the genetic variance that underlies a sexually-selected weapon that is dimorphic among males and female fecundity. Previous studies indicated that a negative genetic correlation between these two traits likely exists. We found male morph showed considerable additive genetic variance, which is unlikely to be explained solely by mutation-selection balance, indicating the likely presence of large-effect loci. However, a significant magnitude of inbreeding depression also indicates that morph expression is likely to be condition-dependent to some degree and that deleterious recessives can simultaneously contribute to morph expression. Female fecundity also showed a high degree of inbreeding depression, but variance in female fecundity was mostly explained by epistatic effects, with very little contribution from additive effects. We found no significant genetic correlation, nor any evidence for dominance reversal, between male morph and female fecundity. The complex genetic architecture underlying male morph and female fecundity in this system has important implications for our understanding of the evolutionary interplay between purifying selection and sexually antagonistic selection.</span></p>

Seasonal ecosystem linkages contribute to the maintenance of migratory polymorphism in a salmonid population

<p><span>The influence of resource subsidies on animal </span><span>growth, survival, and reproduction </span><span>is well understood</span><span>, but their ultimate effects on life</span> <span>history</span> <span>have been </span><span>less</span><span> explored.</span> <span>Some wild species</span><span> have </span><span>a</span><span> partially migratory life</span> <span>history</span><span>, wherein migration is dictated based upon </span><span>threshold </span><span>traits</span><span> regulated </span><span>in part </span><span>by </span><span>the </span><span>seasonal </span><span>availability of resources. We conducted</span><span> a large-scale </span><span>field </span><span>manipulation</span><span> experiment</span><span> where</span><span> we </span><span>provided a</span><span> terrestrial invertebrate subsidy</span><span> to </span><span>red-spotted masu salmon</span><span>. Individuals in stream</span><span> reaches </span><span>that received a subsidy had, on average, a 53% increase in growth rate relative to those</span><span> in control reaches. </span><span>This increased</span><span> growth </span><span>resulted in a greater proportion of</span><span> individuals </span><span>reaching</span><span> the threshold body size </span><span>and smolting</span><span> in </span><span>the </span><span>autumn. Consequently, 19</span><span>–</span><span>55% of females </span><span>in subsidized</span><span> reaches</span><span> became migratory</span><span>, whereas 0</span><span>–</span><span>14% </span><span>became migratory </span><span>in the control reaches. Our findings highlight seasonal ecosystem linkage </span><span>as</span><span> a key ecosystem </span><span>property for maintaining</span><span> migratory polymorphism in partially</span> <span>migratory animals</span><span>.</span></p>

Data from: Maintenance and expansion of genetic and trait variation following domestication in a clonal crop: Enset tGBS individual genotype data

<p class="MsoNormal">Clonal propagation enables favourable crop genotypes to be rapidly selected and multiplied. However, the absence of sexual propagation can lead to low genetic diversity and accumulation of deleterious mutations, which may eventually render crops less resilient to pathogens or environmental change. To better understand this trade-off, we characterise the domestication and contemporary genetic diversity of Enset (<em>Ensete ventricosum</em>), an indigenous African relative of bananas (<em>Musa</em>) and principal starch staple for 20 million Ethiopians. Wild enset is strictly sexually outcrossing, but in cultivation is propagated clonally and associated with diversification and specialisation into hundreds of named landraces. We applied tGBS sequencing to generate genome-wide genotypes for 192 accessions from across enset's cultivated distribution, and surveyed 1340 farmers on enset agronomic traits. Overall, reduced heterozygosity in the domesticated lineage was consistent with a domestication bottleneck that retained 37% of wild diversity. However, an excess of putatively deleterious missense mutations at low frequency present as heterozygotes suggested accumulation of mutational load in clonal domesticated lineages. Our evidence indicates that the major domesticated lineages initially arose through historic sexual recombination associated with a domestication bottleneck, followed by amplification of favourable genotypes through an extended period of clonal propagation. Among domesticated lineages we found significant phylogenetic signal for multiple farmer-identified food, nutrition and disease resistance traits and little evidence of contemporary recombination. Development of future-climate adapted genotypes may require crop breeding, but outcrossing risks exposing deleterious alleles as homozygotes. This trade-off may partly explain the ubiquity and persistence of clonal propagation over recent centuries of comparative climate stability.</p>

Data for: Evidence for a maintenance cost for birds maintaining highly flexible basal, but not summit, metabolic rates

<p>Reversible phenotypic flexibility allows organisms to better match phenotypes to prevailing environmental conditions and may produce fitness benefits. Costs and constraints of phenotypic flexibility may limit the capacity for flexible responses but are not well understood or documented. Costs could include expenses associated with maintaining the flexible system or with generating the flexible response. One potential cost of maintaining a flexible system is an energetic cost reflected in the basal metabolic rate (BMR), with elevated BMR in individuals with more flexible metabolic responses. We accessed data from thermal acclimation studies of birds where BMR and/or M<sub>sum</sub> (maximum cold-induced metabolic rate) were measured before and after acclimation, as a measure of metabolic flexibility, to test the hypothesis that flexibility in BMR (ΔBMR), M<sub>sum</sub> (ΔM<sub>sum</sub>), or metabolic scope (M<sub>sum</sub> – BMR; ΔScope) is positively correlated with BMR. When temperature treatments lasted at least three weeks, three of six species showed significant positive correlations between ΔBMR and BMR, one species showed a significant negative correlation, and two species showed no significant correlation. ΔM<sub>sum</sub> and BMR were not significantly correlated for any species and ΔScope and BMR were significantly positively correlated for only one species. These data suggest that support costs exist for maintaining high BMR flexibility for some bird species, but high flexibility in M<sub>sum</sub> or metabolic scope does not generally incur elevated maintenance costs. </p>

The evolutionary maintenance of ancient recombining sex chromosomes in the ostrich

<p><span>Sex chromosomes have evolved repeatedly across the tree of life and often exhibit extreme size dimorphism due to genetic degeneration of the sex-limited chromosome (e.g. the W chromosome of some birds and Y chromosome of mammals). However, in some lineages, ancient sex-limited chromosomes have escaped degeneration. Here, we study the evolutionary maintenance of sex chromosomes in the ostrich (<em>Struthio</em> <em>camelus</em>), where the W remains 65% the size of the Z chromosome, despite being more than 100 million years old. Using genome-wide resequencing data, we show that the population-scaled recombination rate of the pseudoautosomal region (PAR) is higher than similar-sized autosomes and is correlated with pedigree-based recombination rate in the heterogametic females</span><span>,</span><span> but not homogametic males. Genetic variation within the sex-linked region (SLR) (π = 0.001) was significantly lower than in the PAR, </span><span>consistent with recombination cessation. Conversely, genetic variation </span><span>across the PAR (π = 0.0016) was similar to that of autosomes and dependent on local recombination rates, GC content, and to a lesser extent, gene density. In particular, the region close to the SLR was as genetically diverse as autosomes, likely due to high recombination rates around the PAR boundary restricting genetic linkage with the SLR to only ~50Kb. The potential for alleles with antagonistic fitness effects in males and females to drive chromosome degeneration is therefore limited. While some regions of the PAR had divergent male-female allele frequencies, suggestive of sexually antagonistic alleles, coalescent simulations showed this was broadly consistent with neutral genetic processes. Our results indicate that the degeneration of the large and ancient sex chromosomes of the ostrich may have been slowed by high recombination in the female PAR, reducing the scope for the accumulation of sexually antagonistic variation to generate selection for recombination cessation.</span></p>

Corticosterone treatment results in fat deposition and body mass maintenance without effects on feeding behaviour or immunity in female lizards (Tropidurus catalanensis)

<p>In different life history stages, animals must maintain homeostasis through predictable, unpredictable and/or challenging events. Glucocorticoids (GC), hormones released in response to hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal/interrenal (HPA/HPI) axis activation, promote various behavioural and physiological adjustments on a daily manner; and in order to restore balance, after facing stressors. When GC are elevated for an extended period and in high concentrations, characterizing a chronic exposure, it can lead to deleterious effects on animals&rsquo; physiology, such as accumulation of fat bodies, changes in feeding behaviour and suppression of immune function. We aim to elucidate the effects of chronic corticosterone exposure and body condition index (BI) in fat deposition, feeding behaviour and immune function in <em>Tropidurus catalanensis</em>&rsquo; females. Thirty animals were divided in three groups: 1. Control (no experimental procedure was performed); 2. Empty Implant (animals surgically received an empty silastic tube); and 3. CORT Implant (animals surgically received one silastic tube filled with CORT). Blood samples were collected throughout the experiment to assess CORT plasma levels, total and differential leukocyte count, bacterial killing ability (BKA), and hemagglutination titer. An immune challenge using phytohemagglutinin (PHA) was conducted to measure innate and adaptive immune response. Feeding behaviour and fat bodies were also evaluated. After implantation, CORT treated animals maintained a stable body mass through weeks of captivity, while Control and Empty Implant groups displayed weight loss. In the CORT treated animals, there was also a positive relation between BI and fat bodies, and higher fat bodies deposition when compared to groups 1 and 2. No effects of CORT treatment were observed on immune response or feeding behaviour.</p>

Dominance loss and tenure maintenance in Kalahari meerkats

<p>In many social species, both the acquisition of dominance and the duration that individuals maintain their status are important determinants of breeding tenure and lifetime reproductive success. However, few studies have yet examined the extent and causes of variation in dominance tenure and the duration of breeding lifespans. Here we investigate the processes that terminate dominance tenures and examine how they differ between the sexes in wild Kalahari meerkats (<em>Suricata suricatta</em>), a cooperative breeder where a dominant breeding pair produces most of the young recruited into each group. Mortality and displacement by resident subordinate competitors were important forms of dominance loss for both sexes. However, dominant males (but rarely females), were also at risk of takeovers by extra-group invading males. Dominant males also differed from dominant females in that they abandoned their group after the death of their breeding partner, when no other breeding opportunities were present; whereas dominant females that lost their partner remained and continued to breed in the same group. We show that a larger number of processes can terminate dominance tenure in males with the result that the average male tenure of breeding positions was shorter than that of females, which contributes to the reduced variance in the lifetime reproductive success in males compared to females. Our analysis suggests that sex differences in emigration and immigration may often have downstream consequences for sex differences in reproductive variance and for the selection pressures operating on females and males.</p>
