The residential part of the Roman villa of Carranque preserves one of the best collections of Roman mosaics in Spain. Most of the mosaics have been dated to the 4th century AD. In this case, we see Oceanus represented. In Greek mythology Oceanus was the son of Uranus and Gaia. The Romans commonly depicted him as a muscular man with a long beard and horns (often with crab claws on his head, as in this case). Oceanus appears surrounded by marine flora and fauna. In this case, we see Briseis and Achilles represented. In Homer's Iliad, Briseis was kidnapped by Achilles. However, Agamemnon took possession of her which provoked the wrath of Achilles who withdrew from the battle of Troy. After the death of his friend Patroclus, Achilles returned to battle. In gratitude, King Agamemnon returned Briseis to him. It is precisely this moment that is represented in the mosaic. Pompeii - VI.8.23 - Mosaic Fountain
This mosaic fountain is built up against the back wall of a small, lavishly painted, peristyle in the Casa Della Fontana Piccola (VI.8.23). It was scanned as part of the 2022 Pompeii Water and Sanitation Project field school run by the University of Missouri. The facade of the fountain is covered in lavish mosaics bordered by seashells, with a small pool in front. In the pool is a pedestal; on the right a bronze statue of a seated man, and on the left the remains of a small marble statue. The house nextdoor (VI.8.22) is the house of the Fontana Grande, with a slightly larger fountain (Very creative naming!). Mosaic Room 11. Villa Romana del Casale, Sicily
Mosaic Room 11. Vestibule of the Adventus Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Sicily is home of 3500 m of the most important Roman mosaics in the world. This is an Imperial villa dating to 350 CE. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. These models are the result of combined FARO scans and photogrammetry datasets returned to GDH in C4D format. The models were each exported out of C4D, cleaned in Meshlab, retopologized in ZBrush, UV unwrapped in Blender, and textured and normal-map baked in Blender or Substance Designer. The original project was a joint effort between the U. of Catania and CVAST at USF. Dr. Mariarita Sgarlata and Dr. H. Maschner, Investigators. Data from: The neck as a keystone structure in avian macroevolution and mosaicism
<p><strong>Background</strong><br>The origin of birds from non-avian theropod dinosaur ancestors required a comprehensive restructuring of the body plan to enable the evolution of powered flight. One of the proposed key mechanisms that allowed birds to acquire flight and modify the associated anatomical structures into diverse forms is mosaic evolution, which describes the parcelization of phenotypic traits into separate modules that evolve with heterogeneous tempo and mode. Avian mosaicism has been investigated with a focus on the cranial and appendicular skeleton, and as such we don't understand the role of the axial column in avian macroevolution. The long, flexible neck of extant birds lies between the cranial and pectoral modules and represents an opportunity to study the contribution of the axial skeleton to avian mosaicism. <br><strong><br>Results</strong><br>Here we use 3D geometric morphometrics in tandem with phylogenetic comparative methods to provide, to our knowledge, the first integrative analysis of avian neck evolution in context with the head and wing and to interrogate how the interactions between these anatomical systems have influenced macroevolutionary trends across a broad sample of extant birds. We find that the neck is integrated with both the head and the forelimb. These patterns of integration are variable across clades and only specific ecological groups exhibit either head-neck or neck-forelimb integration. Finally, we find that ecological groups that display head-neck and neck-forelimb integration tend to display significant shifts in the rate of neck morphological evolution. <br><br><strong>Conclusions</strong><br>Combined, these results suggest that the interaction between trophic ecology and head-neck-forelimb mosaicism influences the evolutionary variance of the avian neck. By linking together the biomechanical functions of these distinct anatomical systems, the cervical vertebral column serves as a keystone structure in avian mosaicism and macroevolution.</p>

Community metabarcoding reveals the relative role of environmental filtering and spatial processes in metacommunity dynamics of soil microarthropods across a mosaic of montane forests
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Disentangling the relative role of environmental filtering and spatial processes in driving metacommunity structure across mountainous regions remains challenging, as the way we quantify spatial connectivity in topographically and environmentally heterogeneous landscapes can influence our perception of which process predominates. More empirical datasets are required to account for taxon- and context-dependency but relevant research in understudied areas is often compromised by the taxonomic impediment<span><span>. </span></span>We here employed haplotype-level community DNA metabarcoding, enabled by stringent filtering of Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs), to characterize metacommunity structure of soil microarthropod assemblages across a mosaic of five forest habitats on the Troodos mountain range in Cyprus. We found similar β diversity patterns at ASV and species (OTU, Operational Taxonomic Unit) levels, which pointed to a primary role of habitat filtering resulting in the existence of largely distinct metacommunities linked to different forest types. Within-habitat turnover was correlated to topoclimatic heterogeneity, again emphasizing the role of environmental filtering. However, when integrating landscape matrix information for the highly fragmented <i>Quercus alnifolia</i> habitat, we also detected a major role of spatial isolation determined by patch connectivity, indicating that stochastic and niche-based processes synergistically govern community assembly. Alpha diversity patterns varied between ASV and OTU levels, with OTU richness decreasing with elevation and ASV richness following a longitudinal gradient, potentially reflecting a decline of genetic diversity eastwards due to historical pressures. Our study demonstrates the utility of haplotype-level community metabarcoding for characterising metacommunity structure of complex assemblages and improving our understanding of biodiversity dynamics across mountainous landscapes worldwide.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
Preliminary on-ice remote sensing measurements during the MOSAiC expedition
<p>Several different remote sensing instruments were deployed on the sea ice floe next to RV Polarstern during the MOSAiC expedition (mosaic-expedition.org). Here, preliminary data from nine instruments for two observation periods (Nov 2019 and Sep 2020) is provided. Initial calibration was performed but data might change for the final datasets. Outliers were filtered and some time series smoothed. Data from Figure 10 in Nicolaus et al.
