Research software stakeholders in Africa
<p>In 2019 the <a href="https://www.researchsoft.org/">Research Software Alliance</a> set out to map the research software landscape in the<a href="https://www.researchsoft.org/blog/2020-03/"> Global North</a>. In 2021 they followed up with a mapping of the <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7179892">Global South</a> with support from consultants in various regions in Africa, South America and Asia.</p> <p>Based on <a href="https://talarify.co.za">Talarify's</a> extensive networks in Africa and past collaboration with various research software communities, we built on the mapping by ReSA in 2022 and added an additional 166 African research software stakeholders. Open Science stakeholders in Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia [updated, February 2023]
<p>The dataset contains tabular information about 1118 stakeholders (1079 unique entities) in 15 countries of Southeastern Europe that have been identified as Open Science stakeholders within the framework of the project NI4OS-Europe, funded by the European Commission under the INFRAEOSC-5b call.</p> <p>It was collected between November 2022 and the end of January 2023 based on the information provided by project partners from Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. It builds upon the dataset collected in 2019 as part of the NI4OS-Europe landscaping activity (Kosanović, Biljana, Ševkušić, Milica, & Otašević, Vladimir. (2020). Data created in a stakeholder analysis of selected cases of Nature-Based Solutions in Scotland
<p>These data represent the results of a stakeholder analysis of selected cases of catchment-related 'Nature-Based Solutions' (NbS) in Scotland. This arose from a desk-based study to examine publicly-accessible website content and associated reports to assess the actors involved in Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), their attributes, and relationship to six NbS related initiatives in Scotland. These data were collected and analysed November 2022-March 2023. Please see the first tab for more information about the study, and the content on each of the tabs of the spreadsheet.</p> <p>This was carried out as part of investigation into Scaling and Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions: WP4 of Project JHI-D2-2 in the 2022-2027 Strategic Research Programme funded by the Scottish Government. Mobilisation of data to stakeholder communities: Bridging the research-practice gap using a commercial shellfish species model
<p>Knowledge mobilisation is required to "bridge the gap" between research, policy and practice. This activity is dependent on the amount, richness and quality of the data published. To understand the impact of a changing climate on commercial species, stakeholder communities require better knowledge of their past and current situations. The common cockle (<i>Cerastoderma edule</i>) is an excellent model species for this type of analysis, as it is well-studied due to its cultural, commercial and ecological significance in west Europe. Recently, <i>C. edule</i> harvests have decreased, coinciding with frequent mass mortalities, due to factors such as a changing climate and diseases. In this study, macro and micro level marine historical ecology techniques were used to create datasets on topics including: cockle abundance, spawning duration and harvest levels, as well as the ecological factors impacting those cockle populations. These data were correlated with changing climate and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) index to assess if they are drivers of cockle abundance and harvesting. The analyses identified the key stakeholder communities involved in cockle research and data acquisition. It highlighted that data collection was sporadic and lacking in cross-national/stakeholder community coordination. A major finding was that local variability in cockle populations is influenced by biotic (parasites) and abiotic (temperature, legislation and harvesting) factors, and at a global scale by climate (AMO Index). This comprehensive study provided an insight into the European cockle fishery but also highlights the need to identify the type of data required, the importance of standardised monitoring, and dissemination efforts, taking into account the knowledge, source, and audience. These factors are key elements that will be highly beneficial not only to the cockle stakeholder communities but to other commercial species.</p>
