Genetic structuring in a Neotropical palm analyzed through an Andean orogenesis‐scenario

<p>Andean orogenesis has driven the development of very high plant diversity in the Neotropics through its impact on landscape evolution and climate. The analysis of the intraspecific patterns of genetic structure in plants would permit inferring the effects of Andean uplift on the evolution and diversification of Neotropical flora. In this study, using microsatellite markers and Bayesian clustering analyses, we report the presence of four genetic clusters for the palm <em>Oenocarpus bataua</em> var. <em>bataua </em>which are located within four biogeographic regions in northwestern South America: (a) Chocó rain forest, (b) Amotape-Huancabamba Zone, (c) northwestern Amazonian rain forest, and (d) southwestern Amazonian rain forest. We hypothesize that these clusters developed following three genetic diversification events mainly promoted by Andean orogenic events. Additionally, the distinct current climate dynamics among northwestern and southwestern Amazonia may maintain the genetic diversification detected in the western Amazon basin. Genetic exchange was identified between the clusters, including across the Andes region, discarding the possibility of any cluster to diversify as a distinct intraspecific variety. We identified a hot spot of genetic diversity in the northern Peruvian Amazon around the locality of Iquitos. We also detected a decrease in diversity with distance from this area in westward and southward direction within the Amazon basin and the eastern Andean foothills. Additionally, we confirmed the existence and divergence of <em>O. bataua</em> var. <em>bataua</em> from var. oligocarpus in northern South America, possibly expanding the distributional range of the latter variety beyond eastern Venezuela, to the central and eastern Andean cordilleras of Colombia. Based on our results, we suggest that Andean orogenesis is the main driver of genetic structuring and diversification in <em>O. bataua</em> within northwestern South America.</p>

Investigation on the Use of Passive Microclimate Frames in View of the Climate Change Scenario

<p>Passive microclimate frames are exhibition enclosures able to modify their internal climate in order to comply with paintings&rsquo; conservation needs. Due to a growing concern about the effects of climate change, future policies in conservation must move towards affordable and sustainable preservation strategies. This study investigated the hygrothermal conditions monitored within a microclimate frame hosting a portrait on cardboard with the aim of discussing its use in view of the climate expected indoors in the period 2041&ndash;2070. Its effectiveness in terms of the ASHRAE classification and of the Lifetime Multiplier for chemical deterioration of paper was assessed comparing temperature and relative humidity values simultaneously measured inside the microclimate frame and in its surrounding environment, first in the Pio V Museum and later in a residential building, both located in the area of Valencia (Spain). Moreover, heat and moisture transfer functions were used to derive projections over the future indoor hygrothermal conditions in response to the ENSEMBLES-A1B outdoor scenario. The adoption of microclimate frames proved to be an effective preventive conservation action in current and future conditions but it may not be sufficient to fully avoid the chemical degradation risk without an additional control over temperature.</p>

Global agricultural land use scenarios for estimating the potential of forest regeneration for climate mitigation to 2050

<p>The dataset includes 90 global food system and land use scenarios developed with the model BioBaM-GHG 2.0. The scenarios have been developed for assessing the global potential of forest regeneration for climate mitigation to 2050 under various food system pathways, i.e. diets, crop yield developments, land requirements for energy crops, and two variants of grassland use.</p> <p>The scenarios include the following data on country level: Land use and land-use change, cropland area by crop group, grazing area by quality classes, crop production by crop groups, crop consumption by crop groups and use types, crop wastes (losses), net imports/exports, production and consumption of animal products, grass supply and demand, GHG emissions from land-use change, GHG emissions from agricultural activities, and total cumulated GHG emissions.</p> <p>The main model result in this context, cumulative carbon sequestration from forest regeneration until 2050, is calculated as difference between the parameters &quot;GHG emissions from land use change (cumulative) (Mt CO2e)&quot; and &quot;GHG emissions from land use change excluding C stock changes from natural succession (cumulative) (Mt CO2e)&quot;.</p> <p>Please refer to the related publication &quot;Exploring the option space for land system futures at regional to global scales: The diagnostic agro-food, land use and greenhouse gas emission model BioBaM-GHG 2.0&quot; (Kalt et al., 2021 - currently under review at Ecological Modelling) for further information.</p> <p>This work was funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within project P29130-G27 GELUC.</p>

Open Digital Science Study - Scenarios

<p>Narrative scenarios about envisaged future use of ODS&nbsp;exemplifying ODS semantics, implications, trends and thus providing the necessary level of concreteness for detailed discussions with experts and general public.</p> <p>ODS concept and vision refinement are&nbsp;pursued using scenarios of potential future ODS usage as a proxy. The scenarios assist in communicating the vision, explore future trends, discuss options for measuring ODS uptake and impact and generally stimulate the discussion with a broad community.&nbsp;</p> <p>The different aspectsof ODS are difficult to embrace in a single definition or description. We therefore propose to facilitate the ODS vision validation using future ODS scenarios as an intermediary conceptual step. These scenarios about the future of ODS help to communicate the ideas, discuss trends and their implications, understand issues and collect policy needs. Scenario-based exploratory techniques have proven useful for strategic forecasting of technical trends [Geschka &amp; Hanenwald 13, Mieke 07, Lizaso et al. 04] and more recently for research and technology policy [Prem et al. 14, Prem 14].&nbsp;</p> <p>Open online discussions (facilitated by study team members and supported by the imagery of future ODS scenarios) play&nbsp;a central element of the ODS methodology.&nbsp;</p> <p>The scenarios facilitate communication of different ODS vision aspects and the expert and open community assessment.&nbsp;</p>

Scenario simulations of the changing Black Sea ecosystem (SIMSEA)

<p>The regional Black Sea ecosystem model (BSEM) has been applied for the first time for biogeochemical simula­tions of the Black Sea ecosystem (Oguz, T., H. W. Ducklow, J. E. Purcell, and P. Malanotte-Rizzoli (2001), Modeling the response of topdown control exerted by gelatinous carnivores on the Black Sea pelagic food web. J. Geophys. Res., 106, 4543–4564). The BSEM model is able to describe the Black Sea specific features as demonstrated by the analysis presented herein. One of the key modification of the existing models is the introduction of two new components - the carnivore predators <em>Mnemiopsis</em> and <em>Noctiluca shunt.</em> Originally they began to exist in the lower trophic Black sea food web since the 80s. They feed on zooplankton and are responsible for the reduction of zooplankton standing stock that represents an ecological concern. Detailed description of the BSEM can be found in Miladinova S., A. Stips, E. Garcia-Gorriz, D. Macias Moy (2016c), Modelling Toolbox 2: The Black Sea ecosystem model, EUR 28372 EN, doi:10.2788/677808.</p> <p>The model is coupled to the General Estuarine Transport Model (GETM). It is forced with fluxes, obtained from realistic meteorological condi­tions and tuned for the Black Sea ecosystem in particular. The main advantage of the GETM-BSEM model set-up for the Black Sea is the possibility to study: (i) the long-term evolution of the Black Sea ecosystem; (ii) the effect of nutrient load and regional weather on the biogeochemical structure.</p> <p>Data sets consists of monthly mean values of total phytoplankton (large + small) and nitrate concentrations on a horizontal grid of 423x172 data points (2 longitude minutes x 2 latitude minutes) and 70 vertical levels. Simulations are performed for the period from 1960 to 2014 (55 years). The 3D monthly mean vertical coordinate (m), phytoplankton (mmol N/m**3) and nitrate (mmol N/m**3) are stored in NetCDF format.</p> <p> </p>

Development and impact analysis of ground motion datasets for potential strong-to-great seismic scenarios in Chinese mainland

<p>This repository contains result data for the paper&nbsp;<i> "Influence of flexibility options on the German transmission grid — A sector-coupled mid-term scenario"</i>.</p><p>The published data includes optimization results of the three main scenarios in the mentioned publication.&nbsp;</p><p>The data for each scenario is stored as csv-files, which allows analysing it with many different tools. In addition, the data can be imported in Python as a network object of the open-source tool PyPSA by using the function <a href="https://pypsa.readthedocs.io/en/latest/api_reference.html#pypsa.Network.import_from_csv_folder">import from csv folder </a>.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The authors thank the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action for funding the research project eGon (funding code: 03EI1002).</p>

<p>Based on this model we wrote the manuscript: "Participatory modelling of scenarios to restore nitrogen cycles in a nutrient-saturated area"</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>This paper aims to find socially acceptable solutions of circularity as measure to reduce nitrogen (N) losses and prevent environmental damage by combining participatory modelling and scenario Substance Flow Analyses (SFA). A local perspective was taken on the agro-food-waste system in the animal production-dominated German district Cleves. Three scenarios were programmed as Monte Carlo simulation of SFA with stakeholder input regarding crop allocation, livestock composition, livestock reduction, and manure allocation following the elimination of feed imports. One scenario with the unaltered stakeholder input (PS), one with altered crop allocation to satisfy the demand for feed (CBS), and one with the livestock numbers changed to match the locally available feed (LBS).&nbsp;In the reference year (2020) agricultural losses amounted to 0.07 t N year-1&nbsp;ha -1 agricultural land and 0.12 t N in feed was imported year-1&nbsp;ha -1 agricultural land. In the PS feed import elimination led to deficits in feed availability. The LBS showed the biggest reduction of agricultural N losses and improved N use efficiency (+6%), however agricultural losses were still high (0.05 t N year-1&nbsp;ha -1 agricultural land). The results show a limited effect of feed import elimination on N losses if no further measures are taken, such as increased sufficiency of consumers, e.g. less animal-based products. Further, the study shows, that it is important to improve stakeholders´ knowledge about approaches to circular agro-food-waste systems. The discrepancy between stakeholder visions and N circularity provide policy makers with the recommendation to improve stakeholders´ visions of a circular agro-food-waste system.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>
