Assessing Factors of User Participation in Social Media During Crisis Events: An Analysis of Features and Practices

This data is analyzed and presented in the publication: Assessing Factors of User Participation in Social Media During Crisis Events: An Analysis of Features and Practices

Abstract

The relevance of employing social media in crisis scenarios has aroused interest for researchers and teams responsible for crisis management. The aim of this study is to explore the experience and abilities of social media users related to such events. For this, we conducted an analysis of the functionalities of social media used in this context, followed by a survey with users of social media. The research included the participation of 159 individuals and queried whether the participants had previously witnessed crisis events, whether they habitually share information about these events, and whether they perceived the importance of this practice. The results suggest that participants actively use social media and are inclined to share information about crisis events, provided improvements are made to the existing features. This study offers contributions toward a more profound understanding of social media tools, user interaction, and information sharing while considering the challenges found during such events.

Social Media Marketing for SMEs: Leveraging Information Systems for Sales Performance

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) may directly interact with more clientele using social media marketing (SMM). To ensure accurate data and effective monitoring of progress, the field of SMM requires implementing a robust information system. This study examines the impact of information systems on consumer engagement in social media marketing for SMEs. This approach assesses the adoption of social media marketing using a single variable. This study employed purposive sampling to identify 129 SMEs for cross-sectional preliminary research. The preliminary research will take place around Jabodetabek in May and June of 2024, utilizing a Google Form survey. The author analyzed the data obtained from PLS-SEM using Smart PLS 3.0. This preliminary research computed Partial Least Squares (PLS) scores and performed bootstrapping. From a statistical standpoint, social media enhances the marketing effectiveness of SMEs in Indonesia. The market's efficiency and performance demonstrate the gain. This preliminary research consists of nine variables, such as, competitor pressure, affordable marketing cost, user generated content, belief in information, customer relationship, social media marketing adoption, SMEs’ marketing engagement, and sales performance, with only one hypothesis exhibiting a non-significant relationship.

Keywords—social media marketing, SMEs, information systems, marketing engagement

Database of Indian Social Media Influencers on Twitter

Databases of highly networked individuals have been indispensable in studying narratives and influence on social media. To support studies on Twitter in India, we present a systematically categorised database of accounts of influence on Twitter in India, identified and annotated through an iterative process of friends, networks, and self-described profile information, verified manually. We built an initial set of accounts based on the friend network of a seed set of accounts based on real-world renown in various fields, and then snowballed “friends of friends” multiple times, and rank ordered individuals based on the number of in-group connections, and overall followers. We then manually classified identified accounts under the categories of entertainment, sports, business, government, institutions, journalism, civil society accounts that have independent standing outside of social media, as well as a category of “digital first” referring to accounts that de- rive their primary influence from online activity. Overall, we annotated 11580 unique accounts across all categories. The database is useful studying various questions related to the role of influencers in polarisation, misinformation, extreme speech, political discourse etc.

Data from: Identifying conservation priorities for gorgonian forests in Italian coastal waters with multiple methods including citizen science and social media content analysis

Gorgonian forests are among the most complex of subtidal habitats in the Mediterranean Sea, supporting high biodiversity and providing diverse ecosystem services. Despite their iconic status, the geographical distribution and condition of gorgonian species is poorly known. Using multiple online data sources, our primary aims were to compile, map and analyse observations of gorgonian forests in Italian coastal waters to assess the biological complexity of gorgonian forests; evaluate impacts and vulnerable species, and identify areas of special interest inside and outside of existing MPAs to help prioritise conservation strategies and actions.

Data for Shouting into the void: A database of the alternative social media platform Gab

As social media platforms have increased their role as content moderators, alternative social media platforms have emerged with fewer rules and policies on moderating content. One such platform is Gab, a social media platform similar to Twitter that champions free speech with minimal standards on content. Early research has linked this platform with alt-right, hate speech, conspiracy theories, and other alternative content that is sometimes marginalized in mainstream social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. In an effort to provide a means for researchers to study this platform, we introduce a database of 35,851,186 posts (with additional edit histories) and 819,957 user profiles web-scraped from Gab between August 2016 and December 2018. In this paper, we outline our data collection process, provide descriptive statistics, consider the ethics of our data collection process, and provide suggested avenues of inquiry for researchers interested in analyzing our database.

*Metrics Survey on Researchers' Usage Purposes for Social Media B

Response data from part B of the second online survey of the *metrics-project. Main goal of the survey was to determine researchers' motivations for using various social media platforms that are potential sources for altmetrics, as well as inquiring about their perceptions of various metrics for research evaluation. During dissemination, a strong focus lay on researchers from social sciences and economics.

The questionnaire had originally been implemented in LimeSurvey. Dissemination started on 25 June 2018; the survey was finally taken offline on 13 February 2019. The call for participation was disseminated via a combination of direct non-personalized mails and mailing lists. A total of ~27,000 recipients has been targeted this way.
