Regional Flood Frequency Analysis of the Sava River in South-Eastern Europe
<p>Journal: Sustainability</p> <p>Abstract: Regional flood frequency analysis (RFFA) is a powerful method for interrogating hydrological series since it combines observational time series from several sites within a region to estimate risk-relevant statistical parameters with higher accuracy than from single-site series. Since RFFA extreme value estimates depend on the shape of the selected distribution of the data-generating stochastic process, there is need for a suitable goodness-of-distributional-fit measure in order to optimally utilize given data. Here we present a novel, least-squares-based measure to select the optimal fit from a set of five distributions, namely Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Generalized Logistic, Gumbel, Log-Normal Type III and Log-Pearson Type III. The fit metric is applied to annual maximum discharge series from six hydrological stations along the Sava River in South-eastern Europe, spanning the years 1961 to 2020. Results reveal that (1) the Sava River basin can be assessed as hydrologically homogeneous and (2) the GEV distribution provides typically the best fit. We offer hydrological‒meteorological insights into the differences among the six stations. For the period studied, almost all stations exhibit statistically insignificant trends, which renders the conclusions about flood risk as relevant for hydrological sciences and the design of regional flood protection infrastructure.</p> <p>URL: https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/14/15/9282</p> <p>The uploaded datasets are the Annual Maximum Series of Sava River runoff for the six analysed hydrological stations: Radovljica, Čatež, Zagreb, Jasenovac, Županja and S. Large Dataset of Nigeria Covid-19 Tweets for Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining Tasks
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>Information is essential for growth; without it, little can be accomplished. Data gathering has seen significant changes throughout the previous few centuries because of certain transitory medium. The look and style of information transference are affected by the employment of new and emerging technologies, some of which are efficient, others are reliable, and many more are quick and effective, but a few were disappointing for various reasons.</p> <p><strong>Aims</strong></p> <p>This study aims at using TextBlob and VADER analyser with historical tweets, to analyse emotional responses to the corona virus pandemic (covid-19). It shows us how much of a sociological, environmental, and economic impact it has in Nigeria, among other things. This study would be a tremendous step forward for students, researchers, and scholars who want to advance in fields like data science, machine learning, and deep learning.</p> <p><strong>Methodology</strong></p> <p>The hashtag ‘covid-19' was used to collect 1,048,575 tweets from Twitter. The tweets were pre-processed with a twitter tokenizer, and Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) and TextBlob were used for sentiment and text mining, respectively. Topic modelling was done with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). The simulated subjects, on the other hand, were visualized using Multidimensional scaling (MDS).</p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>The result of the VADER sentiment returned 39.8%, 31.3% and 28.9%, positive, neutral, and negative sentiment respectively while the result of the TextBlob sentiment returned 46.0%, 36.7% and 17.3%, neutral, positive, and negative sentiment, respectively.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>With all of this, information from social media may be used to help organizations, governments, and nations around the world make smart and effective decisions about how to restrict and limit the negative effects of covid-19. Also know the opinion and challenges of people, then deal with problem of misinformation.</p> <p>It is concluded that with popular belief a significant number of the populace regards covid-19 as a virus that has come to stay, some believe it will eventually be conquered.</p>

Marine plastics alter the organic matter composition of the air-sea boundary layer, with influences on CO2 exchange: a large-scale analysis method to explore future ocean scenarios
<p>Microplastics are substrates for microbial activity and can influence biomass production. This has potentially important implications in the sea-surface microlayer, the marine boundary layer that controls gas exchange with the atmosphere and where biologically produced organic compounds can accumulate. In the present study, we used six large scale mesocosms to simulate future ocean scenarios of high plastic concentration. Each mesocosm was filled with 3 m3 of seawater from the oligotrophic Sea of Crete, in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. A known amount of standard polystyrene microbeads of 30 μm diameter was added to three replicate mesocosms, while maintaining the remaining three as plastic-free controls. Over the course of a 12-day experiment, we explored microbial organic matter dynamics in the sea-surface microlayer in the presence and absence of microplastic contamination of the underlying water. Our study shows that microplastics increased both biomass production and enrichment of carbohydrate-like and proteinaceous marine gel compounds in the sea-surface microlayer. Importantly, this resulted in a 3 % reduction in the concentration of dissolved CO2 in the underlying water. This reduction was associated to both direct and indirect impacts of microplastic pollution on the uptake of CO2 within the marine carbon cycle, by modifying the biogenic composition of the sea's boundary layer with the atmosphere.</p>

Player Experience in Video Game Character Analysis: A Study of Female Characters
<h3><span>Overview</span></h3> <p><span>This dataset is part of the study titled "Player Experience in Video Game Character Analysis: A Study of Female Characters", conducted at </span>Mapúa University. The research aims to integrate player experience into an existing framework for video game character analysis. </p> <h3><span>Content</span></h3> <p><span>The dataset includes:</span></p> <ul> <li><span>A partial transcript of 5 semi-structured interviews with the key informants. Originally, 8 interviews were conducted, but the audio/video recordings for 3 interviews were lost and thus their transcripts are not available.</span></li> <li><span>Significant codes presented in tabulated form.</span></li> </ul> <h3><span>Data Collection Method</span></h3> <p><span>Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted via Facebook Messenger and Discord from March to April 2024. Participants were various video game players from different backgrounds and age groups, ranging from 20 to 40 years old. Due to technical issues, the recordings of 3 interviews were lost, resulting in only 5 available transcripts. </span></p> <h3><span>Data Processing and Analysis</span></h3> <p><span>The 5 available interviews were transcribed verbatim. Statistical analysis and dataset for: Three-dimensional body reconstruction enables quantification of liquid consumption in small invertebrates
<p>Linked to the journal article published in bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.06.14.599002).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Quantifying feeding patterns provides valuable insights into animal behaviour. However, small invertebrates often consume incredibly small amounts of food. This renders traditional methods, such as weighing individuals before and after food acquisition, either inaccurate or prohibitively expensive. Here, we present a non-invasive method to quantify food consumption of small invertebrates whose body expands during feeding. Using the markerless pose estimation software DeepLabCut, we three-dimensionally track the body of Argentine ants, <em>Linepithema humile</em>. Using these extracted markers, we developed an algorithm which computationally reconstructs the ant’s body, directly measuring volumetric change over time. Moreover, we provide measures of accuracy and quantify the ant’s feeding response to a range of sucrose concentrations, as well as a gradient of caffeine-laced sucrose solutions. Small invertebrates are often prolific invasive species and disease vectors, causing significant ecological and economical damage. Statistical analysis and dataset for: Invasive ants fed spinosad collectively recruit to known food faster yet individually abandon food earlier
<p>Linked to the journal article published in bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.06.20.599949).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Current management strategies applied to invasive ants rely on slow-acting insecticides which aim to delay the ant’s ability to detect the poison until its effects are noticeable. Despite this, most control efforts are unsuccessful, likely due to bait abandonment and insufficient sustained consumption. Conditioned taste aversion, a learned avoidance of a particular taste, is a crucial survival mechanism which prevents animals from repeatedly ingesting toxic substances. However, whether ants are capable of this delayed association between food taste and subsequent illness remains largely unexplored. Here, we exposed colonies of the highly invasive Argentine ant, <em>Linepithema humile</em>, to a sublethal dose of the slow-acting insecticide spinosad. We combined measurements of individual-level feeding patterns with quantification of collective preferences and foraging dynamics to investigate the potential effects of the toxicant on behaviour. Collectively, ants preferred an odour associated with a previously experienced food, even if this contained spinosad, over a novel one. However, at the individual-level, previous exposure to spinosad resulted in reduced food consumption, as a consequence of earlier food abandonment. Moreover, while control-treated colonies recruited slower to a food source which tasted like a previously experienced one, spinosad-exposed colonies recruited equally fast to both novel and familiar foods. Although it appears that ants are unable to develop a conditioned taste aversion to sublethal doses of spinosad, ingestion of even small amounts of the toxicant strongly influences foraging behaviour. Understanding the subtle effects of slow-acting pesticides on ant cognition and behaviour can ultimately inspire the development of more efficient control methodologies.</p>

Efficacy and safety of subcutaneous vs. sublingual immunotherapy in allergic rhinitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
<p>Allergic rhinitis significantly impacts patients' quality of life, and allergen immunotherapy (AIT) offers an alternative to conventional treatments. This study compares the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for allergic rhinitis. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov identified nine randomized controlled trials involving 780 patients (427 SCIT, 353 SLIT). The primary outcome was symptom score; secondary outcomes included medication score, symptom medication score, and local and systemic reactions. Results showed SCIT significantly reduced symptom scores compared to SLIT (Pooled SMD: -0.52, 95% CI: -0.60, -0.03, I2 =83%, P<0.05). However, SCIT patients experienced more severe systemic reactions (grade 3&4) than SLIT patients (Pooled SMD: 6.27, 95% CI: 1.47, 26.73, I2 =0%, P=0.01). Other outcomes were comparable between both groups. In conclusion, SCIT is slightly more effective than SLIT but is associated with a higher frequency of severe systemic reactions, guiding clinicians to tailor treatments to individual patient needs.</p>

Data of the article Analysis of the self-archiving policies of journals in the highest rank category of the Finnish journal classification system within computer science, physics and electronic engineering
<p>The publication forum level three journals representing the three fields of science of computer science, computer science and electrical engineering were identified by utilizing the MinEdu field search filter while searching for the top-ranked journals from the publication channel search (https://www.tsv.fi/julkaisufoorumi/haku.php?lang=en), which is based on Field of Science, Statistics Finland classification (https://www.stat.fi/meta/luokitukset/tieteenala/001-2010/index_en.html). The data were extracted during august 2017 consists of total of 127 individual journals. It is worth noting that circa 30 journals were classified into more than one fields of sciences under scrutiny. First, the journals were divided into representing gold and hybrid model journals. Second, green open access policies of the identified hybrid journals were analyzed using Laakso’s (2014) publisher policy coding framework. Also publishers of the individual journals were identified and subsequently added to the data.</p> <p>NOTE! The data includes the shortest embargo to either institutional or subject repositories. WDXRF analysis of Iberian unfired potsherds from the Late Iron Age
<p>This data set contains 15 chemical analyses of unfired potsherds from the Iberian workshop of the Mas de Moreno (Teruel, Spain). The chemical composition of the samples was obtained by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF).</p> <p><strong>Method</strong></p> <p>The outer surfaces of all the samples were mechanically removed prior to analysis.</p> <p>The samples were heated to 950°C for one hour after 24h drying at 50°C, weighted for LOI calculation and ground in a tungsten carbide mortar. 0.8 g of powder was mixed with 3.2 g of Spectroflux 110 flux (Johnson Matthey; 33.5% metaborate and 66.5% lithium tetraborate) and melted in gold-platinum crucibles with an autofluxer melting device (Breitländer).</p> <p>The data were collected with a SRS 3400 (Bruker) spectrometer of 3 kW power (working at 60 kV, 100 mA max.). The spectrometer was equipped with a rhodium tube window, four analyser crystals (OVO-55, LiF200, LiF220, PET), two collimators (0.46° and 0.15°) and two sensors (a proportional Ar/CH4 gas-flow counter and a scintillation counter). Is the winner really the best? A critical analysis of common research practice in biomedical image analysis competitions
<p>This data set corresponds to the paper: Is the winner really the best? A critical analysis of common research practice in biomedical image analysis competitions [1] (Experiment: Comprehensive reporting).</p> <p>The key research questions corresponding to this data set were:</p> <p>RQ1: What is the role of challenges for the field of biomedical image analysis (e.g. How many challenges conducted to date? In which fields? For which algorithm categories? Based on which modalities?)</p> <p>RQ2: What is common practice related to challenge design (e.g. choice of metric(s) and ranking methods, number of training/test images, annotation practice etc.)? Are there common standards?</p> <p>RQ3: Does common practice related to challenge reporting allow for reproducibility and adequate interpretation of results?</p> <p>To address these research questions, we aimed to capture all biomedical image analysis challenges that have been conducted up to 2016. To acquire the data, we analyzed the websites hosting/representing biomedical image analysis challenges, namely grand-challenge.org, dreamchallenges.org and kaggle.com as well as websites of main conferences in the field of biomedical image analysis, namely Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI), International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI), International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Medical Imaging, Cross Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF), International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the Single Molecule Localization Microscopy Symposium (SMLMS) and the BioImage Informatics Conference (BII). This yielded a list of 150 challenges with 549 tasks.</p> <p>Next, a tool for instantiating the challenge parameter list introduced in [1] was used by some of the authors (engineers and medical student) to formalize all challenges that met our inclusion criteria as follows: (1) Initially, each challenge was independently formalized by two different observers. (2) The formalization results were automatically compared. In ambiguous cases, when the observers could not agree on the instantiation of a parameter - a third observer was consulted, and a decision was made. When refinements to the parameter list were made, the process was repeated for missing values.
