Health health impact assessment relevant output calculated from scenarios involving different levels of Near Term Climate Forcer mitigation

<p>This dataset contains output data from the health impact assessment using air pollutant concentrations from AerChemMIP model experiments in different Future Scenarios that involve the mitigation of Near-Term Climate Forcers, Climate and Land-use. The model experiments were conducted by UKESM1, a model contributing to CMIP6, and was run over the period 2015 to 2100 to investigate the effect of anthropogenic emissions on near-term climate forcers. The atmosphere only CMIP6 configuration of UKESM1 was used to run this set of experiments. Model simulations were conducted at a global resolution of 1.875&deg; x 1.25&deg;. These concentrations were then used to assess the impact of different mitigation pathways on the air pollution health burden. In addition, output is also provided from sensitivty scenarios that explore the impact that the total population count, age structure of the population and baseline mortality rates have on the calculated air pollution health burden.</p> <p>Outputs provided in the dataset include 10 year means of the global and regional total population count data, population weighted pollutant concentrations (both annual mean PM<sub>2.5</sub> and seasonal maximum ozone concentrations), total adult human health mortality (including the upper and lower 95% confidence intervals) in response to exposure to PM<sub>2.5</sub> and O<sub>3</sub> for different sensitivity scenarios.</p> <p>The second file (GEMM-5COD) represents the same set of calculations and data but using a different set of mortality outcomes (5 specific causes of disease) for PM2.5 exposure instead of non-accidential mortality (non-communicable disease) and all lower respiratory infections (GEMM NCD+LRI) in the original set of calculations.Further details can be found in the accompanying publication that uses the data.</p>

Data from: Effects of livestock grazing on soil, plant functional diversity and ecological traits vary between regions with different climate in northeastern Iran

Understanding the responses of vegetation characteristics and soil properties to grazing in different precipitation regimes is useful for the management of rangelands, especially in the arid regions. In northeastern Iran, we studied the responses of vegetation to livestock grazing in three regions with different climate: arid, semi-arid and sub-humid. In each region, we selected 6-7 pairwise sampling areas of high versus low grazing intensity and six traits of the present species were recorded on 1 m2 plots - 5 grazed and 5 ungrazed in each area. The overall fertility was compared using the dissimilarity analysis, linear mixed-effect models were used to compare the individual fertility parameters, functional diversity indices and species traits between the plots with high and low grazing intensity and between the climatic regions. Both climate and grazing, as well as their interaction, affected fertility parameters, functional diversity indices and the representation of species traits. Grazing reduced functional evenness, height of the community, the representation of annuals, but increased the community leaf area. In the sub-humid region, grazing also reduced functional richness. Further, grazing decreased the share of annual species in the semi-arid region and seed mass in the arid region. Larger leaf area and seed mass, smaller height and lower share of annuals were associated with intensive grazing. Species with large LA and seed mass, lower height and perennials can be therefore presumed to tolerate trampling and benefit from high nutrient levels, associated with intensive grazing. By providing a detailed view on the impacts of overgrazing, this study highlights the importance of protection from grazing as an effective management tool for maintaining the pastoral ecosystems. In general, the composition of plant traits across the pastures of northeastern Iran was more affected by intensive grazing compared to climate.

Data from: Diachronous increase in early Cambrian ichnofossil size and benthic faunal activity in different climatic regions

In order to clarify the pattern of diversification and processes of biological activity during the Cambrian radiation, ichnofossils were comparatively studied in the early Cambrian sections of Newfoundland, South China and western Mongolia. Special attention was paid to size distributions of the most common ichnogenus, Planolites, and the densities of all the observed ichnofossils that preserve animal activity as expressed by bedding plane bioturbation indices (BPBI). From the Fortune Head section in Newfoundland, a clear size increase in the ichnogenus Planolites is confirmed from the Treptichnus pedum Zone to the overlying Rusophycus avalonensis Zone. The BPBI also shows much stronger biological activity in the R. avalonensis Zone than in the T. pedum Zone. In Meishucun, South China and Gobi-Altai, Mongolia, however, a variety of Planolites sizes had already appeared in the T. pedum Zone, and the BPBI's on some bedding surfaces of the T. pedum Zone are already comparable to those in the R. avalonensis Zone in Newfoundland. In the earliest Cambrian, diversification and increase in the biological activity of the benthic fauna were diachronous in the wide geographic scale, starting earlier at lower latitudes (South China and western Mongolia) than at higher latitudes (Newfoundland), reflecting differences in the onset of Cambrian benthic animal activity under different climatic conditions.

Data from: Discrepancies in vegetation phenology trends and shift patterns in different climatic zones in middle and eastern Eurasia between 1982 and 2015

Changes in vegetation phenology directly reflect the response of vegetation growth to climate change. In this study, using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset from 1982 to 2015, we extracted start date of vegetation growing season (SOS), end date of vegetation growing season (EOS) and length of vegetation growing season (LOS) in the middle and eastern Eurasia region and evaluated linear trends in SOS, EOS and LOS for the entire study area, as well as for four climatic zones. The results show that the LOS has significantly increased by 0.27 d/yr (days per year), mostly due to a significantly advanced SOS (-0.20 d/yr) and a slightly delayed EOS (0.07 d/yr) over the entire study area from 1982 to 2015. The vegetation phenology trends in the four climatic zones are not continuous throughout the 34 year period. Furthermore, discrepancies in the shifting patterns of vegetation phenology trend existed among different climatic zones. Turning points (TP) of SOS trends in the Cold zone, Temperate zone and Tibetan Plateau zone occurred in the mid or late 1990s. The advanced trends of SOS in the Cold zone, Temperate zone and Tibetan Plateau zone exhibited accelerated, stalled and reversed patterns after the corresponding TP, respectively. The TP did not occurred in Cold-Temperate zone, where the SOS showed a consistent and continuous advance. TPs of EOS trends in the Cold zone, Cold-Temperate zone, Temperate zone and Tibetan Plateau zone occurred in the late 1980s or mid-1990s. The EOS in the Cold zone, Cold-Temperate zone, Temperate zone and Tibetan Plateau zone showed weak advanced or delayed trends after the corresponding TP, which were comparable with the delayed trends before the corresponding TP. The shift patterns of LOS trends were primarily influenced by the shift patterns of SOS trends and were also heterogeneous within climatic zones.
