The LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Science Requirements Document v1 Released Data Products

This tarball includes software and data products associated with the DESC Science Requirements Document (SRD) v1. See the "Executive Summary and User Guide" in the enclosed PDF of the DESC SRD for instructions on how to use and cite those products. The DESC SRD is described on arXiv as follows:

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) will use five cosmological probes: galaxy clusters, large scale structure, supernovae, strong lensing, and weak lensing. The Science Requirements Document (SRD) quantifies the expected dark energy constraining power of these probes individually and together, with conservative assumptions about analysis methodology and follow-up observational resources based on our current understanding and the expected evolution within the field in the coming years. We then define requirements on analysis pipelines that will enable us to achieve our goal of carrying out a dark energy analysis consistent with the Dark Energy Task Force definition of a Stage IV dark energy experiment.

Dark Photon Exclusions from Existing Axion Haloscope Measurements

Dark photon exclusions for polarized and unpolarized dark photons converted from axion measurements are each in a .mat file.

Keys for the data are 'RBF_ueV', 'RBF_chi', 'UF_ueV', 'UF_chi', 'HAYSTAC_ueV', 'HAYSTAC_chi', 'ADMX_ueV', 'ADMX_chi', 'CAPP_ueV', and 'CAPP_chi' to obtain exclusions for dark photons for each of these experiments in the polarized and unpolarized cases. Each case has its own .mat file.

The .py file is the Python code used to calculate cos2(theta), the square of the dot product between the dark photon polarization and the axis of the haloscope cavity in the slowly varying polarized case described in the associated manuscript. The code shows how to calculate cos2(theta) using probability, taking the rotation of the earth into account for longer measurements. (If your computer is slow, you can use the find and replace function in your IDE to change all 'block=True' statements to 'block=False' and also change num_pts=50 instead of 500.)

To use the .mat file format in Python, use a script like the following:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt from scipy.io import loadmat mat_file = loadmat('haloscope_exclusions_unpolarized.mat') masses_in_ueV = mat_file['HAYSTAC_ueV'][0] chi_exclusion = mat_file['HAYSTAC_chi'][0] plt.figure() plt.semilogy(masses_in_ueV, chi_exclusion) plt.xlabel('Mass ($\mu$eV)') plt.ylabel('$\chi$') plt.title('HAYSTAC unpolarized dark photon exclusions') plt.show()

Dark Halo Craters Data

This dataset is a global collection of the longitude and latitude and diameters of dark halo craters. The software used to map the DHCs was Lunar QuickMap.The data for the iron content of the ejecta was found both from the Kaguya (Selene) and Clementine missions. We mapped all longitudes and latitudes of the lunar surface.

We determined a crater to be a DHC if it had an ejecta pattern with visibly higher iron content than the surrounding rock. All of the counted DHCs exhibited this quality. We omitted craters that had elevated iron inside the crater rim (as opposed to in the ejecta) because the iron signature inside might result from visible mare that filled in the crater subsequent to impact. Areas associated with visible lunar maria were ignored for this particular data set.

We identified and mapped craters globally that had a minimum diameter of 1 km. We mapped the section 40–70 W, 20–70 S with no minimum diameter limit. Determining whether the ejecta had an iron content pattern that is significantly different and distinctive from the surrounding rock is subjective, so we mapped craters conservatively. The surface was mapped by two different people so there could be some additional human error and slight subjectivity of DHCs. We only considered craters with a clearly identifiable ejecta pattern, and we required that the ejecta had to surround at least 25% of the crater. We allowed cases with asymmetrical ejecta.

We mapped the craters in 10-degree longitude bands, first checking the iron content and ejecta pattern of craters and then confirmed the DHC with albedo satellite images. We took the longitude and latitude of the center of the crater and measured the diameter with QuickMap tools, from one rim to the other rim.
