MARTREC Data from Visualizing Sea Level Rise Impacts in Transportation Planning

<p>This research focuses on a study area in Fort Lauderdale--a two-block stretch of Las Olas Blvd. between Southeast 9th Ave. and Southeast 11th Ave. where researchers expect mean high tides up to 36 inches higher in the year 2100. The project investigates a community planning process in which a combination of high- and low-tech visualization methods&mdash;a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a human artist&mdash;was used to increase public participation and draw out local knowledge which helps the decision-making process for the future. Mixed reality technologies such as Microsoft Hololens (augmented reality) and Samsung VR Gear (virtual reality) offer immersive educational and engagement experiences, which may convey information in a more meaningful way. Using a quasi-experimental methodology of before-and-after surveys, we compare the degree to which virtual reality technologies improve<br> (or impede) constituents&rsquo; absorption of information regarding sea-level rise risks to roadway infrastructure in their communities.</p>

These visualizations allow users to filter and select data to gain key insights into each city in the analysis.</p>

Data from: Zebrafish retinal ganglion cells asymmetrically encode spectral and temporal information across visual space

<p>In vertebrate vision, the tetrachromatic larval zebrafish permits non-invasive monitoring and manipulating of neural activity across the nervous system in vivo during ongoing behaviour. However, despite a perhaps unparalleled understanding of links between zebrafish brain circuits and visual behaviours, comparatively little is known about what their eyes send to the brain via retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Major gaps in knowledge include any information on spectral coding, and information on potentially critical variations in RGC properties across the retinal surface corresponding with asymmetries in the statistics of natural visual space and behavioural demands. Here, we use in vivo two photon (2P) imaging during hyperspectral visual stimulation as well as photolabeling of RGCs to provide a functional and anatomical census of RGCs in larval zebrafish. We find that RGCs' functional and structural properties differ across the eye and include a notable population of UV-responsive On-sustained RGCs that are only found in the acute zone, likely to support visual prey capture of UV-bright zooplankton. Next, approximately half of RGCs display diverse forms of colour opponency including many that are driven by a pervasive and slow blue-Off system - far in excess of what would be required to satisfy traditional models of colour vision. In addition, most information on spectral contrast was intermixed with temporal information. Taken together, our results suggest that zebrafish RGCs send a diverse and highly regionalised time-colour code to the brain.</p>

Data from: One and two year visual outcomes from the Moorfields age-related macular degeneration database: a retrospective cohort study and an open science resource

Objectives: To analyse treatment outcomes and share clinical data from a large, single-center, well-curated database (8174 eyes / 6664 patients with 120,756 single entries) of patients with neovascular age related macular degeneration (AMD) treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). By making our depersonalised raw data openly available, we aim to stimulate further research in AMD, as well as setting a precedent for future work in this area. Setting: Retrospective, comparative, non-randomised electronic medical record (EMR) database cohort study of the UK Moorfields AMD database with data extracted between 2008 and 2018. Participants: Including one eye per patient, 3357 eyes/patients (61% female). Extraction criteria were ≥ 1 ranibizumab or aflibercept injection, entry of "AMD" in the diagnosis field of the EMR, and a minimum of one year of follow-up. Exclusion criteria were unknown date of first injection and treatment outside of routine clinical care at Moorfields before the first recorded injection in the database. Main outcome measures: Primary outcome measure was change in VA at one and two years from baseline as measured in Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters. Secondary outcomes were the number of injections and predictive factors for VA gain. Results: Mean VA gain at one-year and two years were +5.5 (95%CI:5.0,6.0) and +4.9 (95%CI:4.2,5.6) letters respectively. Fifty-four percent of eyes gained ≥5 letters at two years, 63% had stable VA (±≤14 letters), forty-four percent of eyes maintained good VA (≥70 letters). Patients received a mean of 7.7 (95%CI:7.6,7.8) injections during year one and 13.0 (95%CI:12.8,13.2) injections over two years. Younger age, lower baseline VA, and more injections were associated with higher VA gain at two years. Conclusion: This study benchmarks high quality EMR study results of real life AMD treatment and promotes open science in clinical AMD research by making the underlying data publicly available.

Data from: Shared and modality-specific brain regions that mediate auditory and visual word comprehension

<p>Visual speech carried by lip movements is an integral part of communication. Yet, it remains unclear in how far visual and acoustic speech comprehension are mediated by the same brain regions. Using multivariate classification of full-brain MEG data, we first probed where the brain represents acoustically and visually conveyed word identities. We then tested where these sensory-driven representations are predictive of participants' trial-wise comprehension. The comprehension-relevant representations of auditory and visual speech converged only in anterior angular and inferior frontal regions and were spatially dissociated from those representations that best reflected the sensory-driven word identity. These results provide a neural explanation for the behavioural dissociation of acoustic and visual speech comprehension and suggest that cerebral representations encoding word identities may be more modality-specific than often upheld.</p>

Data from: Visualizing mineralization processes and fossil anatomy using synchronous synchrotron X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction mapping

<p>Fossils, including those that occasionally preserve decay-prone soft-tissues, are mostly made of minerals. Accessing their chemical composition provides unique insight into their past biology and/or the mechanisms by which they preserve, leading to a series of developments in chemical and elemental imaging. However, the mineral composition of fossils, particularly where soft-tissues are preserved, is often only inferred indirectly from elemental data, while X-ray diffraction that specifically provides phase identification received little attention. Here, we show the use of synchrotron radiation to generate not only X-ray fluorescence elemental maps of a fossil, but also mineralogical maps in transmission geometry using a two-dimensional area detector placed behind the fossil. This innovative approach was applied to millimetre-thick cross-sections prepared through three-dimensionally preserved fossils, as well as to compressed fossils. It identifies and maps mineral phases and their distribution at the microscale over centimetre-sized areas, benefitting from the elemental information collected synchronously, and further informs on texture (preferential orientation), crystallites size and local strain. Probing such crystallographic information is instrumental in defining mineralization sequences, reconstructing the fossilization environment and constraining preservation biases. Similarly, this approach could potentially provide new knowledge on other (bio)mineralization processes in environmental sciences. We also illustrate that mineralogical contrasts between fossil tissues and/or the encasing sedimentary matrix can be used to visualize hidden anatomies in fossils.</p>
