Long‐term trends in gastropod abundance and biodiversity: Disentangling effects of press versus pulse disturbances

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: Climate-induced pulse (e.g., hurricanes) and press (e.g., global warming) disturbances represent threats to populations, communities, and the ecosystem services that they provide. We leveraged three decades of annual data on tropical gastropods to quantify the effects of major hurricanes, associated secondary succession, and global warming on abundance, biodiversity, and species composition.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Gastropod abundance, biodiversity, and composition were estimated annually for each of 27 years in a tropical montane forest that experienced three major hurricanes (Hugo, Georges, and Maria). Generalized linear mixed-effects, linear mixed-effects, and linear models evaluated population- and community-level responses to year, ambient temperature, understory temperature, hurricane, and time since hurricane. Variation partitioning determined the unique and shared variation in biotic responses associated with temperature, disturbance, and succession.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Rather than declining, gastropod abundances generally increased through time, whereas the responses of biodiversity were weak and scale dependent. Hurricanes and associated secondary succession, rather than ambient atmospheric temperature, molded long-term trends in abundances and biodiversity.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: Global warming over the past 30 years has not progressed sufficiently to elicit significant responses by gastropods in the Luquillo Mountains. Rather, effects from pulse disturbances (i.e., hurricanes) and secondary succession currently drive long-term variation in abundance and biodiversity. Gastropods evince high resilience in this tropical ecosystem. Historical exposure to recurrent hurricanes likely imbued the fauna with broad niches that make them resistant to current levels of global warming. We predict that biotic resiliency will be challenged once changes in temperature exceed interannual and inter-habitat differences that typify this hurricane-mediated system, or combine with an increased frequency of hurricanes and droughts to alter associations among environmental characteristics that define the fundamental niches of species. Only then might significant declines in abundance or the appearance of novel communities characterize the gastropod fauna in the Luquillo Mountains.</p>

Tree stem diameter and height of Araucaria araucana, Nothofagus pumilio and Nothofagus dombeyi in mixed stands affected to different levels by anthropogenic disturbance in south-central Chile

<p><em><strong>Context: </strong></em>Around half of the <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests in Chile are affected by anthropogenic disturbances such as logging, grazing, and seed harvesting, causing forest structure to become more heterogeneous. This can critically affect natural regeneration and stand development. It also challenges forest management and yield estimations, involving tree height predictions. The data allow to assess the impact of anthropogenic disturbances on forest structure and to identify optimal tree height models and calibration designs. Based on the data provided, a general workflow for this purpose was developed and published on GitHub as R software (Zhou &amp; Zwanzig 2022).</p> <p><em><strong>Location: </strong></em>Mixed <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests of the Andes Cordillera in the Araucaria Region in south-central Chile. Latitude, longitude and altitude of the plots is provided in the data table.</p> <p><em><strong>Taxon:</strong></em> Monkey Puzzle tree (<em>Araucaria araucana</em> (Molina) K.Koch),&nbsp;Lenga Beech (<em>Nothofagus pumilio</em> (Poepp. &amp; Endl.) Krasser), Coigue (<em>Nothofagus dombeyi</em> (Mirb.) Oerst.)</p> <p><em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> A total of twelve stands were studied at four different sites and classified into four different intensities of anthropogenic disturbance depending on the intensity of the combined effects of logging, grazing and seed harvesting. In 25 to 36 plots per stand, horizontal point sampling measurements of stem diameter as well as of height of selected trees were carried out using a basal area factor of 4 m&sup2; per hectare. Diameter at breast height (DBH, in cm) was measured for all selected trees and total tree height (HT, in m) was measured for one-third of them using a Haga device.</p> <p>For ten of the plots, in which no trees were found by horizontal point sampling, &#39;NA&#39; is entered for species and no values are given for DBH and HT in the data table.</p> <p><em><strong>Funding:</strong></em> The field data collection was funded through the&nbsp;project 016/2019 &ldquo;Indicadores fenol&oacute;gicos y estructurales de alteraci&oacute;n de h&aacute;bitat en bosques de <em>Araucaria</em>&rdquo;, being part of the Fondo de Investigaci&oacute;n del Bosque Nativo (FIBN) of the Corporaci&oacute;n Nacional Forestal (CONAF) and the Ministry of Agriculture of Chile.</p> <p><em><strong>Contributions:</strong></em> JH, PC and AP conceived the field study and acquired the funds;&nbsp;EK, JH, PC and AP performed the empirical observations; XZ, EK and MZ reviewed and processed the data collection for publication.</p>

Complex hybridization between deeply diverged fish species in a disturbed ecosystem

<p>Over the past two decades, researchers have documented the extent of natural hybridization between closely related species using genomic tools. Many species across the tree of life show evidence of past hybridization with their evolutionary relatives. In some cases, this hybridization is complex – involving gene flow between more than two species. While hybridization is common over evolutionary timescales, some researchers have proposed that it may be even more common in contemporary populations where anthropogenic disturbance has modified a myriad of aspects of the environments in which organisms live and reproduce. Here, we develop a flexible tool for local ancestry inference in hybrids derived from three source populations and describe a complex, recent hybridization event between distantly related swordtail fish lineages (<em>Xiphophorus</em>) and its potential links to anthropogenic disturbance.</p>

Meta-analysis shows forest soil CO2 effluxes are dependent on the disturbance regime and biome type

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>F</span><span>orest </span><span>s</span><span>oil CO<sub>2</sub> efflux (F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span>)</span><span> is a crucial process in global carbon cycling; however, how F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span> responds to disturbance regimes in different forest biomes is poorly understood. </span><span>W</span><span>e quantif</span><span>ied</span><span> the effects of disturbance regimes on F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span> </span><span>across boreal, temperate, tropical, and</span><span> Mediterranean</span><span> forests</span><span> based on 1240 observations from 380 studies. Globally, climatic perturbations such as elevated CO<sub>2</sub> concentration, warming, and increased precipitation increase F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span> </span><span>by 13 to 25%. F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span> is increased by forest conversion to grassland and elevated carbon input by forest management practices but reduced by decreased carbon input, fire, and acid rain. Disturbance also changes soil temperature and water content, which in turn affect the direction and magnitude of disturbance influences on F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span>. F</span><span>CO<sub>2</sub></span><span> is disturbance- and biome-type dependent, and such effects should be incorporated into earth system models to improve the projection of the feedback between the terrestrial C cycle and climate change.</span></p>

Data for linked disturbance in the temperate forest: earthworms, deer, and canopy gaps

<p>Despite the large body of theory concerning multiple disturbances, there have been relatively few attempts to test the theoretical assumptions of how and if disturbances interact. Of particular importance is whether disturbance events are linked, as this can influence the probability and intensity of ecological change. Disturbances are linked when one disturbance event increases or decreases the likelihood or extent of another. To this end, we used two long-term, multi-disturbance experiments in northern Wisconsin to determine whether earthworm invasion is linked to canopy gap creation and white-tailed deer browsing. These three disturbances are common and influential within North American temperate forests, making any interactions among them particularly important to understand. We expected both deer and canopy gaps to favor invasive earthworms, particularly species that live close to or on the soil surface. However, we found only partial support for our hypotheses, as both deer exclosures and canopy gaps decreased earthworms in each experiment. Further, earthworm density increased the most over time in areas far from the gap center and in areas with deer present. Deer exclosures primarily decreased <em>Aporrectodea</em> and <em>Lumbricus</em> species, while gaps decreased <em>Dendrobaena</em> and <em>Lumbricus</em> species. Our findings show that earthworm invasion is linked to deer presence and gap-creating disturbances, which provides new insight toward multiple disturbance theory, aboveground-belowground dynamics, and temperate forest management.</p>

Disturbance alters transience but nutrients determine equilibria during grassland succession with multiple global change drivers

<p>Disturbance and environmental change may cause communities to converge on a steady state, diverge towards multiple alternative states, or remain in long-term transience. Yet, empirical investigations of successional trajectories are rare, especially in systems experiencing multiple concurrent anthropogenic drivers of change. We examined succession in old field grassland communities subjected to disturbance and nitrogen fertilization using data from a long-term (22-year) experiment. Regardless of initial disturbance, after a decade communities converged on steady states largely determined by resource availability, where species turnover declined as communities approached dynamic equilibria. Species favored by the disturbance were those that eventually came to dominate the highly fertilized plots. Furthermore, disturbance made successional pathways more direct under low nutrients, revealing an important interaction effect between nutrients and disturbance as drivers of community change. Our results underscore the dynamical nature of grassland and old field succession, demonstrating how community properties such as beta-diversity change through transient and equilibrium states.</p>
